Hey kids!

In the most recent issue of Spin Magazine (Amy Winehouse cover) Patton Oswalt has an essay detailing how Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church represent the spirit of punk even more than a headful of liberty spikes and an armload of gob encrusted Crass records. I am not, however, advocating the purchase of Spin. Just go to your local Spin havin' place, flip to the very back page and stick it to the man. Oi oi! That's yer lot!

I'm going to reserve final judgment until I see the piece, but I don't see how advocating for a fascist theocracy is "punk rock".

Patton is pretty funny most of the time. Is there a reason we don't "advocate" buying Spin?

Kinda new to the board and the Ron and Fez show.

Well, to quote a modern philosopher...

BOB GUCCIONE JR AT SPIN, WHAT'S THE MATTER, PISSED OFF BECAUSE YOUR DAD GETS MORE PUSSY THAN YOU? FUCK YOU! SUCK MY FUCKING DICK!

Go on and wring my neck
Like when a rag gets wet
A little discipline
For my pet genius
My head is like lettuce
Go on and dig your thumbs in
I cannot stop giving in
I'm thirty-something

Sense of security
Like pockets jingling
Midlife crisis
Suck ingenuity
Down through the family tree

You're perfect, yes, it's true
But without me you're only you (you're only you)
Your menstruating heart
It ain't bleeding enough for two

It's a midlife crisis...

What an inheritance
The salt and the kleenex
Morbid self attention
Bending my pinky back
A little discipline
A donor by habit
A little discipline
Rent an opinion

Sense of security
Holding blunt instrument
Midlife Crisis
I'm a perfectionist
And perfect is a skinned knee

You're perfect, yes, it's true
But without me you're only you (you're only you)
Your menstruating heart
It ain't bleeding enough for two

It's a midlife crisis...............

You are well loved, Mike The Teacher, because we care alot...(Patton pending).

And as to my seemingly anti-Spin spin: I guess I was sort of advocating non-advocation of Spin, but the invocation of the act of advocation of non-advocation is my vocation as an aging punk. It's all I can do since my lumbago no longer allows me to mosh effectively. At any rate, Oswalt's take on Westboro is both hilarious and altruistic. Check it, yo...

i think the punk idea is focused around anti-establishment. does this one baptist church flaunt itself as the opposite of the culture it is derived from?perhaps that is patton's idea, but i see anything religeous as pro-establishment, if there religeon is long standing enough i suppose.

Doesn't the thread title insinuate that Patton Oswalt pulled a prank on the Westborogh Baptist Church?

I'm not going to spoil it (mainly because I have yet to find the essay posted on the web). You'll just have to go browse OR buy a Spin to find out. Hint: both GG Allin and Fugazi are mentioned. Emo Elmo likes very much!

That was just a bit of word play to make things more exciting. Sorry if you felt punked by my punky title. And even though there is no chicanery at the expense of the WBC, there really IS an essay by Patton Oswalt in the latest Spin...or is there???

I thought "God Hates the World" was very punk rock.

Great thred but my take is comparing what the Westboro Baptist Church does and what the punk movement did is dumb for lack of a better word.

Hey the man stinks. (Not to simplify the punk movement in any way)

Hey lets go protest the deaths of these guys. (not to take away from thier views and opinions)

An intresting artilce to say the least but, silly in my eyes.

Just my lil' opinion.
