I just hooked up a router and set up a network. When i hook up to my network I can't connect (i was connected for maybe two minutes, then it disconnected). the router is sending out a signal, my computer is picking it up, but it is not connecting. When I ran a diagnostic, it said to check my router. I think that it is a computer problem. Has anyone ever had this problem, and how do i solve it?

what kinda router and how are you connecting? are you using wireless or a cable connected to the router?

Shut down the computor. Reboot the modem. The reset (the recessed button on the bottom) and reboot the router. Bring the computor back up and you should be OK.

I am using netgear. it is a modem connected to a router. I am going to reboot like hottub said and see what happens

Also make sure your computers tcp/ip networking is set to "obtain ip address automatically"
and that your cables are plugged into the right spots :)

I rebooted everything, I had the connection for 3 minutes, then it disconnected.

Is the router new?
is the ethernet card new?

have you used either of them before?

what operating system?

1 more thought, if it's a new router, have you updated to the latest firmware version? (http://kbserver.netgear.com/main.asp)

router is not new but htis is the first time its set up.

Ethernet card? I'm assuming that my computer came with it installed.

What do you mean by operating system?

Sounds like it could be your Johnson rod.

If you are connected and suddenly losing connection, i'm going to guess you have some flaky hardware.
If the ethernet card came with the PC, maybe there is a diagnostic you can run.

To check your ethernet card make and model in windows, right click my computer => properties => device manager
Then look in your programs menu for a listing for that card. Or go to the website of the card manufacturer and look for a diagnostic tool.

Edit: Also check my post above for the link to netgears site they may have more troubleshooting ideas also and update your firmware

Troubleshooting 101:
When in doubt, start with the most basic configuration.
Try plugging the modem into the ethernet port on your PC. This may require some additional fiddling but I think we should rule out the router as being the issue.

Or maybe "borrowing" wifi ;)

Still sounds like the Johnson rod.
