Over the last year-and-a-half or so since XM channel 52 changed from "Unsigned" to "The Verge", I've found myself listening to it more and more. They've turned me on to a lot of Canadian bands I'd never heard of before. Here's a list of bands I've liked enough to go out and download an album or two from iTunes or eMusic.
Apostle of Hustle
Born Ruffians
Chad VanGaalen
Cities in Dust
Feist
Hidden Cameras
Lions in the Street
Matt Mayes
Priestess
Sloan
Small Sins
The D'Urbervilles
The Dears
The Golden Dogs
The Marble Index
The Stills
There's also The New Pornographers, Tegan & Sara and Arcade Fire, who are all pretty good bands from Canada that I was in to before The Verge came aboot.
Is there anybody else out there who's finding yourself listening to a lot of music from our brothers to the north lately? Any other good bands you want to recomend?

If you like BTO, you ought to find some old WJFK clips of their intern, Cigar Sid. He does a rocking rendition of Takin' Care of Bussiness (or as he sings... Bidnah).

Don't forget Alanis Morissette. It doesn't get any more rocking than her.

Tegan & Sara are hatchet faced Gorgons.
Hatchet faced Gorgons seems a little harsh. It does look like they may use a hatchet to cut their hair though.

Check out a band called Whitey Houston from Edmonton Alberta. They are a two piece band and they have a killer live set. Another Edmonton band that is worth checking out is the Murder City Sparrows. I have heard Whitey Houston on the Verge but I don't know if I have heard the Murder City Sparrows on 52 or not.

I know there is a bunch of folks on here who like Wilco, so if you are into them you might want to check out Blue Rodeo. They are kind of similar sounding and the former Wilco pedal steel player, Bob Egan has been with BR for the past 5 yrs or so. Also one of the lead singers of BR, Jim Cuddy has a solo disc and sings a duet with Jeff Tweedie from Wilco.... Good stuff!
Oh and Matt Mays kicks ass...and he's a really nice guy too. I met him a bunch of times back home when I saw them in Halifax. That whole group are friendly as phuck. Great to sit and talk with after a set.

Blue Rodeo is a very cool band, good pick Hunnerbun. Have you heard The Corb Lund Band? Corb used to play bass for a now defunct band called The Smalls that were a mix of country, grunge and a little rock. His band now is more of an alt country band that tour non stop in Western Canada.

I've heard both of those bands on 52. I like Whitey Houston a lot. Just haven't bought anything by them yet.

Allow me to kill the conversation:
For al you lovers of the avant garde, Ontario's legendary Nihilist Spasm Band was one of the greatest experimental(read: most annoying. That counts for something, right?) psych/noise bands from the 60's/70's.
Also, 80's Cannuck bands Ceramic Hello and Iko 83 were among the finest early 80's had to offer in virtually unknown synthy coldwave bands.
Oh yeah, and April Wine.

Another great experimental Canadian band is Skinny Puppy. In the mid 80's thru the late 90's they were far ahead of their time. I haven't enjoyed their two latest albums that they have released since the reformation of the band 4 years ago but the material that the band released up til then was stellar. Without Skinny Puppy Trent Reznor would be still playing piano in Pennsylvania somewhere.

I second that emulsion. And Al Jourgensen would have joined forces with the Pet Shop Boys by now.

Thank god for Skinny Puppy then, I am a huge fan of Alien Jourgensen and all of his side projects post "With Sympathy", although that is a hilarious listen when compared to later Ministry.
