is it just me, or has tv in general just been plain shitty past couple of years?
it seems that seasons get shorter, there are more repeats and the creativity out of hollywood has resembled that of a dehydrated turd?

yup that just about sums it up. I think it's even more noticeable during the summer when they put on the crap that wasn't even good enough to make it on with the crap they put on the rest of the year.

"reality TV" has dominated and I think is fukn horrible. I can do without all the american idol bullshit TV.

The only real show I am looking forward to is the return of Always Sunny in Philladelphia.

th good old days weren't half as good as people remember. yes, there were great shows, but there was also shit. always has been. you only remember the great and think things were wonderful way-back-when (right, blowhard?). there's a fair amount of really good tv (like 6-10 shows i watch religiously). i can't stand reality shows and haven't watched a minute of survivor ever. never saw any bit of appeal in it.

This all started in the mid-late 1990's when Hollywood writers began to get pissy about their cut of the action, making waves about a writers strike. So how did producers respond? They developed "reality TV shows"...the newest trend on the scene.

First they used game shows (Who wants to be a Millionaire? and a nighttime Price is Right), but then came the real swing -- Survivor, Fear Factor, Who wants to eat Dogshit? and Americans? ... Well they literally ate it up.

The production companies were in heaven. No writers to hire. No actors to hire. Just a producer, some production staff and the common man with a dream to be famous. We've allowed ourselves to become the culture in "The Running Man".

Of course TV is dogshit, they are eating it on NBC.

past couple of years?...dehydrated turd?
I thought the notion of dehydration was implied in with the use of TURD. Nevertheless,
If an alien being were to land here and look at the technological marvel that is radio and television, they might soon conclude human race is a waste of space as far as television and radio is concerned.
Just listen to all the advertisements that you are paying to hear and the LACK OF CONTENT.
RnF & OnA not included.
Bring back the Du Mont network.
Edit: Musing,....disregard the above post.

I blame the reality shows. Back around the time Survivor started, there was a writer's strike. The networks tried a few reality shows, because they didn't need the writers or the actors. The public ate that crap up, for some reason, and we're still paying for it today. There aren't as many reality shows, but the networks got spoiled for many years. Now they don't want to put the money into anything good. I'm just glad there's the shows on FX. I just wish they would have more than one drama running at a time.

QFT.

Also, Hollywood is just giving the masses what they want, or what they will accept. Most good shows, like 30 Rock, struggle to find an audience. They appeal to the Fez's out there who would rather order Domino's because they know what to expect than make the effort to find something new.

There are just a lot more hours to fill now, so there's a lot more crap.

However, the best of TV now is better than the best of TV from other eras. A lot of people argue that television is in the midst of a new golden age (http://www.backstage.com/bso/news_reviews/multimedia/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002877267).

A lot of shows from the past that were popular, like Hill Street Blues, look remarkably primitive compared to current dramas. It doesn't have the same complex narrative that shows like The Sopranos, Lost and The Wire have displayed. Those old shows are very linear and almost tedious in retrospect.

the increase in number of channels and shows results in a lack of choice.

My DVR has made me not care about the shittiness of TV so much. I record shows I like, then I watch them or don't watch them at my leisure. It makes the overall bad quality of television hard to notice.

Or it results in a tv-induced ADD where no one will watch anything that doesn't immediately capture their interest.

Ditto to that Tivo has freed up the sense of time when shows are on and I don't have to watch when the man says so. Couple that with movies and show that Tivo suggests for me and I find enough quality stuff(very loosely used ) to enjoy without stooping to the level of watching Are you smarter than a fifth grader. Plus no commercial

By the way when does Sunny in Philadelphia return?

Anyone want to suggest little know gems to watch?

I tivo and watch Cash Cab everyday

I think were saying the same thing just two different ways.

When my CD collection had 20 CD's; I listened to about 20 CDs

My Collection numbers in the 1000s; I listen to about 20 CDs

You end up with so much you really have... nothing. Seems counterintuitive but many of us have felt it. I read an excellent article on the iPod where people burn and load their entire music libraries; only to find, now that's it's all available so easily, that some of whatever makes music special has been lost; the music has less meaning somehow, the ocean of choice becomes limiting.

Or, not.
