So I just read the first volume of Ultimate X-Men

and was pleasantly surprised. I didn't think I was going to like it, the cover is really shitty, but it was pretty good I thought. The details illustration-wise were great and the writing was pretty good. Anybody else read this series?
Also, what do you think the best X-Men series was, and which ones would you recommend?

I'm behind on the Ultimate X-Men hardcovers (only read 3 so far), but I enjoy it.
Friend of the show BKV's issues are across volumes 5 and 6, I believe.
I'm always partial to the height of Claremont's run, like the original introduction of the Shi'ar or the Brood.

I have been getting then in graphic novel size compilations. They are very good. The gay Colossus this and the black Nick Fury thing kind of threw me originally (not that there is anything wrong with either) - it just wasnt what I expected.
Stories are ok. Art can go from fantastic to laughable in some issues. The Ultimate War issue is superb!

i have up to vol. 8 in the trades. i really enjoyed them but have found a bunch of other stuff that has caught my interest. i think the next trade vol. are the ones written by BKV. being a big fan of y and ex machina, i should definitely pick them up.

Also, keep in mind that these are almost nothing like the way these comics were originally presented. Some heros even have powers different, and some are introduced out of sequence, time-wise to what you might be expecting. Just flow with it. You'll like it.

Never really got into Ultimate X-Men. Yea, the cover art was really bad. I've tried getting into the Ultimate Spider-man off and on. But, I did hear from a friend of mine that kinda follows Ultimate X-Men that Colussus was gay. Kinda bizarre.
When i was younger, I was really into the whole Generation X comic. Was kinda fun to read as a side X-men type comic

I never got into any of the ultimate series' but I have heard really good things about ultimate Xmen.

you sir are a smart man.
You cannot go wrong with Uncanny X-men 100 - 150 (intro new team, proteus, pheonix, days of future past) some of the best comics ever.
I also liked mutant massacre, inferno (mid and late 200's) and xcutioners song
If you are looking for new stuff I LOVE Astonishing X-men... great art and really good stories. Also check out morrisons run on New Xmen/ Xmen, some hate it but I loved it even though SOME of the art is terrible, the stories are great. (Xmen 100 ? - 145)

This part is just quoted for truth

Giant Size X-Men #1 then Uncanny X-Men 94-whenever. I'm not going to pretend there's nothing bad in there (there's a reason most compilations don't include #110)

Mutant Massacre was good.
I reread Inferno last year when I bought a collection of TPBs. I had remembered it being good too. I remembered poorly. There's some good things in there, but otherwise kinda mediocre at best and fairly inconsistent in quality.
X-Cutioners Song was just bad.

The first Astonishing X-Men hardcover was good. I look forward to the second.
Morrison's run is the same problem I have with any long projects of his. It starts out really strong, but about halfway to 2/3rds of the way thru, Morrison either starts to get bored of it or focuses on his next project or whatever and the quality suddenly drops and ends poorly.

Compared to older stuff you are right, but growing up in the 80's this was the arcs I remember from being younger... I also loved cable when I was younger so I like xcutioners song.
I thought fall of the mutants was good as a kid, but re reading that one I def see alot of flaws in it

Astonishing trade 3 is good and they are wrapping up #4 so the HC should be out late 07 early 08.
I agree with the morrison run, I loved it at first but it did get old after "Open day". I hated the last arc in it but overall I thought he did a pretty good job with the 40+ issues.
I still recommend it just for the Cassandra Nova stuff.
