A Longer Fuse For Fireworks
Plovers prompt the show’s postponement

(06/21/2007) It’s official. The July 7 fireworks display at Main Beach in East Hampton has been postponed until Labor Day weekend and it could become an end-of-summer affair for the foreseeable future, East Hampton Village Mayor Paul F. Rickenbach Jr. said on Friday.

The fireworks, which are put on by the East Hampton Village Fire Department, will be held on Sept. 1 with a rain date of Sept. 2. This year, the show will be dedicated to the late William Leese, a fireman who chaired the department’s fireworks committee for many years.

For the past three years, piping plovers, the federally protected shorebirds, have built their nests and laid eggs within a few hundred yards of the fireworks launch site. It is a violation of the Endangered Species Act to put on a display so close to the birds’ nesting grounds if the newly hatched chicks have not yet fledged.

In 2005, the display was postponed until Labor Day. Last year, the chicks flew just in time and the fireworks were held as scheduled. This year, at least three pairs have nested near Main Beach and the chicks are not likely to fledge by July 7.


The birds’ presence on the beach over the past several years has forced local officials to acknowledge that an early July fireworks date could present a perennial problem. The only way to avoid that problem altogether is to choose a later date for the display.

“Please understand that there are others who inhabit the planet as well as we homo sapiens,” Mayor Rickenbach said.

As a bit of additional info the Grucci fireworks are usually attended by 10-15000 people and are the back drop for Diddys "White" party each year for you people Magazine fans
