I'm moving into a new aprtment and my landlord has a wireless network set up and he said I could use it if I want. Will he be able to see what websites I visit? Are there any other security issues I need to worry about? I really don't know much at all about wireless so forgive me if these sound like simple questions.

Depends on how devious your landlord is and how tech saavy he is. If you're not too tech saavy and you're afraid of him getting your CC numbers and/or seeing that you visit Wild and Crazy She-Male Whores.com (a Tall James production) I would get your own stuff.

I would see what kind of specials the cable companies offer on new installs. We found a promotion where we got cable internet + digital cable + HBO for less than 80 a month.

Nah.
Just get your own setup. Optimum, or your equivilant all offer the Triple Play. Your peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks.

I am pretty sure you can turn on a logging feature on most wireless routers (can mine) and you can restrict access by url, keyword, and times of day. Prob worth getting your own just in case he sees you going to www.howtoripoffyourlandlord.com (http://www.howtoripoffyourlandlord.com) .

Yeah, that's what I figured I was just wondering because it would save me about $40 a month. I've got the triple play now so I'll just get the same. It's not that I don't trust the guy but I really like my privacy. Thanks for the answers guys.

wow I never knew someone can see what websites you goto from your router? what is the cc and how long does your stuff stay visable? Can anyone see whats on the router?

It seems like no one has privacy anymore. I wonder if the isp's can see what sites we go to based on how much service we use or how long we are online or on what is received or sent?

I love you guys, you are all so computer savy and teach us things some of us will never have known. r&f.net is the best place on the web!!!

Definitely get your own setup. If this guy knows anything about networking/computers he could get all sorts of info from your system when your on his wireless.

He could be a nice guy and have zero bad intent, but why take the chance. Plus, if anybody else in the building is sharing the guys network they could hack into your system.

It's just a smart bet to have your own wireless if you can afford it. If you can't, then firewall the hell out of your system and lock out file and printer sharing.

I know your trying to be funny, haha. But to be honest Im talking about movies, tv shows and music downloads. Plus I dont understand why things are set up so that they can be monitored. Whatever happened to privacy?

I just bought this modem/router combo on Friday. My belkin router was shitting the bed (at least five years old) and I was sick of paying $5 a month to rent my modem from Comcast.

It works great.

Here is my log

I can see the activity and I can block sites etc for users. Also, if you are on HIS service then you really can't claim privacy.

It all depends on how tech savvy the neighbor is. You can always buy an access point and run it through there, and use proxy to mask what you are going. kind of a round about and annoying thing to do.
