I was thinking this today competing these three directors. They all do cult films in a fantasy sense with a unique visual style and memorable films. (For some reason I separate David Lynch from them, probably because he more films "nightmares" rather than "fantasies." Hell, I wonder why Lynch isn't considered up there with Spielberg.)

Gilliam- has hits and misses but when he hits, it's amazing. He's also a Python.
Cronenberg- has kind of gone away from the unique fantasy look and more into human dramas. But his human dramas are amazing. (See: Spider.)
Burton- don't really like him but others seem to.

Filmography:
Gilliam: Brazil, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 12 Monkeys, Fisher King, Tideland, Time Bandits
Cronenberg: Naked Lunch, Videodrome, The Fly (Brundlefly!), Spider, History of Violence, Dead Ringers
Burton: Edward Scissorhands, Batman/Batman Forever, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, Planet of the Apes

Im not a big fan of eithers one of these guys work but if I had to make a prediction, Gilliams work at least studied as art in the future, say 100 years or so.

What? No eXistenZ? I love that freakin' movie. The other two might (MIGHT) be better overall directors and will be remembered by more people, but eXistenZ is my favorite movie that any of them made.

Tim Burton doesn't even deserve to sniff the other two's spunk encrusted undies, and I say that as someone who loves Ed Wood maybe more than life itself.

I love Tim Burton's films, but he doesn't even come close to Terry Gilliam. That other guy just sucks, I wasn't even sure who he was at first, but I don't like any of his movies.

Oops...
I would argue that Cronenberg is the nightmarish one & that Lynch produces dreams of great intensity!!!
