I'm watching this new AFI Top 100 Movies Ever (I don't think that that's the official name) and I don't know how much longer I will.
Why? Goodfellas has already been on. At #91.
Amongst the movies deemed better: Sophie's Choice, 12 Angry Men...and, worst of all, The Sixth Sense.

A lot of great movies came out since the last time the top 100 movie list came out in 2005.

The outrages get worse: Titanic is #83.
That movie made $500 trillion billion, and I can't find anyone who admits they liked it.
Oh, by the way, Goodfellas was #92.

i'm still comfortable saying "persona" is the greatest film ever made, though i'm alone on that one.
"citizen kane" does deserve to be number one though

Well, I certainly don't think a lot of these movies ahead of Goodfellas are better (Tootsie, for one). However, Sophie's Choice and 12 Angry Men are DAMN FINE films.

Tootsie was number 2 on their comedy list (Some Like It Hot was Number 1). Tootsie sucked ass. SLIH was, and is, still funny. But Tootsie? My god.

"Dude, Where's My Car", "Encino Man", "Chairman of the Board", "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector" and that "Dumb and Dumber" prequel without Jim Carrey were 52 - 56.

I totally get that Citizen Kane was revolutionary, influential, and things of that nature. In that sense, it is a great movie. But as far as entertainment goes...zzz zzz zzz.

What a fucking outrage! They should have been at least top 20. Although Biodome easily outshines Encino Man.

Well, the list is not the most entertaining movies of all times.

it is what it is......
AFI goes one way IMDB goes another.....
the good thing about AFI is there is a serious look by acedemia, which gives weight to many different variables.....also, one gets the impression they have a broader exposure to films of all types so they get a fuller perspective....

I agree. I've always been a sucker for these AFI specials, and it's because of the comments they get from certain filmakers and producers.
The most entertaining and informative thing about the AFI shows have always been hearing from those filmmakers and actors with a great knowledge about film, cinema, movies, etc. talk about these films. I love hearing Scorcese talk about the Searchers, or William Friedkin talk about Vertigo, or Sidney Pollack talk about Godfather, etc. Especially when they talk about the influence and talent of Chaplin, Keaton, etc.
These guys know more about film than I could ever hope to know, and they bring great insight into the movies. Often that insight allows me to appreciate a film more. It's one of the reasons I like reading Roger Ebert's reviews and writings about "The Great Films."

While Goodfellas was a very entertaining film, I don't think I would ever put it up as an example of fine filmmaking. Overall I would say that Scorsese has excellent vision and concepts as a filmmaker, with a strong tendency towards hamfistedness when it comes to direction and execution. For my money, give me Night of the Hunter or On the Waterfront.

Scorsese is one of the very few filmmakers today with an understanding of film history.....his knowledge is practically encylopedic......for that reason by itself, he is a national treasure.....

Fuck AFI. I go by this list. (http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm/content_id.23110/Movies) I've only seen 201. I'm a rookie.

Hells yes. NotH is probably my overall favorite movie if I had to pick one. Everything about it is perfect. Such a shame it was Laughton's only film as a director.
As for Scorsese, when will people realize that while Goddfellas is a good film, he made an infinitely better version of "that type" of film with Casino?

Robert Mitchum is so frightening, so center of the universe, burning holes in your retinas, fan-freakin-tastic in that movie, that is easy enough to miss how beautifully shot the film is.

crazy talk! I don't think they're in the same ballpark until you take out about 20 minutes of DeNiro being pussy-whipped by Sharon Stone.

Goodfellas > Casino, much better. But if I had to pick the film that shows Scorsese as an artiste more than a great film maker- and I know everyone goes with Raging Bull- I really need to give it to Taxi Driver, easily my favorite Scorsese work.

And Casino loses points simply for the Pesci-Stone sex scene.

Sorry, Casino FTW. It does a much better job of presenting characters instead of caricatures. Better shot, too. The scene where DeNiro first sees Sharon Stone is better than anything he shot for Goodfellas. Casino also has much better cascading, "natural" ending instead of Goodfellas abrupt "OK, I'LL TURN WITNESS, BYE-BYE" screeching hault. And Casino actually shows that the mob is a bunch of really, REALLY horrible guys far more effectively than Goodfellas....GF is violent, obviously, but it has more of "hey, life in the mob is mostly fun and full of food" vibe. Don't get me wrong, I love GF and watch it everytime I see it on TV, but I think Casino succeeds much more as a "great" film. The story arc and characters are just much better paced and mapped out, and the whole thing feels much more epic.

Finally got around to watching this? So, what was everyone's totals on how many of these 100 that you saw? I'm ashamed to say I've only seen 26 of them.

37 for me and only 5 of the top 10.
2 of the top 100 (The Maltese Falcon and Network) are sitting on my DVR, so those will be added to my list shortly.

These AFI specials are always on during a Princess Cruise
I have noticed that Movies pre 1965 are rated Higher then anything 1980 and Above
These AFI elitists think they are more knowledgeable by making Older = Better
Goodfellas should break 50 atleast.

Goodfellas is probably in about the right spot on the list. Honestly it's a film that I love, but it's not one of the "greatest films" ever made.
As for the list, of course they aren't going to have many post-1980 films....not because of some form of "film snobbery", rather because many post-1980 films suck.
My total on the list is 70 of the 100.

I have to agree with epo on this. There should be more pre 1965 movies on the list than from 1980 to now.
I've seen 48 of the 100.

I agree. I've seen 73 from the list and most of the movies I think should have been on the list are certainly pre-1985:
The Big Sleep
Kubrick's "The Killing"
The Lost Weekend
Five Easy Pieces
The Hustler
Cool Hand Luke
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Great Escape
McCabe and Mrs Miller (can't remember if it was on there or just on the ballot)
The Third Man
Bonnie And Clyde
Dog Day Afternoon
The Holy Grail
Blazing Saddles
Also, Fargo was the only Coen brother film and Pulp Fiction was the only Tarantino on the ballot, yet they had "The Aviator" among Scorsese's 7 or 8 films? So on the ballot at least I would have had to have had:
Miller's Crossing
Reservior Dogs
Barton Fink
