Patenting inventions

Not to sound like the commercials you hear all the time but..
Has anyone out there had an idea for an invention?
Has anyone had an idea patented?
I dont want you to give away what your idea is. I am just curious if you have had anything patented and how I would go about doing that because I have what I think is a good idea that to my knowledge, for what I've researched, doesnt exist.
I dont want to spend money on one of these invetors packages that you here on the radio etc.
It would be nice to get a little extra $$ to sell my idea and have someone market it- should it take off.

The only recent invention of any merit that I am aware of is from a certain Ron Bennington's brilliant idea to put robot arms on mafia guys. BRILLIANT ! I just wrote out a LARGE check to invest in the idea. I am confident he'll take care of the rest.

A buddy of mine at work invented a device for capturing live peregrine falcons. Once a year, he goes down to S.E. Virginia to catch and tag them for school.

I thought I invented my little rolling platform for my computer tower, but then I saw them on sale at Office Max.

Just a little more R&D left to go on that one, but that's what I wrote out the other LARGE check for.
