UGH Shoulda posted this earlier; right now if you go outside and find a clear view of the west; you can see the crescent moon between the very bright Venus to the right of the moon, and the fainter but visible Saturn to the left.
All lined up nice; gonna go try and photo this.

Is Saturn to the upper left, or is it the one further out????

It's a little too hazy to see Saturn here. If you make a 3/4 turn to your left, I'm pretty sure that's Mars in the S.E. If so, that's 3 visible planets!
Wow.
That is the coolest thing I have ever seen.
Thanks for the heads up Mike.

Sometimes i feel so trapped here.. Man i wish we can explore more than we can.. I just wish i lved near a hill or something where i can just lay there and watch.. One of the drawbacks to living in the city..

Don't go now. It's just a little sliver. Go when it's full to get the whole effect.

Will they be able to see this in Las Vegas? Hmmmm
I told my dad to check it out when it gets dark. They are having dinner at my sisters - who is about to go into labor at any moment... i like to think Venus being so bright is a kind of blessing! *gay*

Nah. Not at all.
If the child's born tonight, it might have a profound effect on his/her life.
You never know.

I saw santa once when I was a little girl and he looked JUST like this!
It was xmas eve and my dad and I walked to the corner store and he pointed out SANTA flying in the sky with the flashing red lights on his sleigh.
When we arrived home, the Xmas tree was Flooded with presents all around the bottom!
And we told my mom about seeing santa... 'twas a magical night!

Santa visited us in our home one christmas season; the local fireman did the door to door goodwill thing, filling the world with holiday cheer and joy and...
OK I dont know how scared a human can get before dying or exploding or actually drilling oneself into the earth to escape, but that's a tiny fraction of the horror I experienced when the door rang and our parents told me and my brothers to go ahead and open the door even though it was night, and seeing Santa.
They say we just stood there, silent, staring at... Him.
I was Danny Torrance drooling scared.
Who invented this stupid fucking holiday? [rhetorical]

Saw this last night driving home from a concert with my girl. It was very cool.
A rule of thumb I learned in my Astronomy class in college is that you can spot a planet because it doesn't twinkle like stars do.

Thanks Mike, I dragged a coupla other comics out on the street in front of our open mike last night and saw it! Even just the moon looked super-awesome.
Cylen- that's very interesting about how planets don't twinkle. We were surprised that the planets were so bright.

Venus is probably the most widely reported UFO. It can get terribly bright, and seem to move when watching it from a moving car.

In regards to the topic, tonight would be a good night to go outside as well.
Space Station and Shuttle Visible Together in Night Sky (http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/spacestationandshuttlevisibletogetherinnightsky;_y lt=AtAJ_f0Gt_z72AIqeHiGjzxvzwcF)
Should weather conditions permit to offer clear skies, there will be a few opportunities to see both the Atlantis orbiter and the ISS flying across the sky from many locations.
The sight should easily be visible to anyone, even from brightly-lit cities.
I've looked up the times for New Jersey, from this website: NASA Skywatch (http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/)
So you are welcome North Jersey folk.
In the Newark area, look up at 9pm and 10:33pm tonight, Tuesday June 19th.
Tomorrow, Wednesday June 20th, look up at 9:20pm and 10:55pm.
Thurs, June 21 9:41pm
Fri June 22 10:01pm
Sun Jun 24 9:07pm
According to the article:
Appearing as a pair of very "bright 'stars," the ISS should appear as the somewhat brighter object and will appear to be trailing Shuttle Atlantis as they move across the sky. A large telescope would be needed to make out details of the sprawling station. Traveling in their respective orbits at approximately 18,000 mph (29,000 kilometers per hour), both should be visible from about one to four minutes (depending on the particular viewing pass) as they glide with a steady speed across the sky.
Might be another good opportunity for a picture Mike The Teacher!

Man in Black (Jesse Ventura): No other object has been misidentified as a flying saucer more often than the planet Venus.

I love to stargaze but am no longer in an area where I can do so very often; too much light pollution.
