I say both. It's like being a jockey. You need special skills, and you have to have that competitive intestinal fortitude; it is a competition.

Q: How did they come up with the name "Nascar"?

A: "Hey Jethro, that sure is a nas car you got there!"

grrr... you stole that from ME!

Skill, sport, or reason for "fans" to get together and consume lots and lots of beer?

Who needs a reason?

I've had serious, heated discussions with friends over this. Nascar AND *golf* are NOT SPORTS. Not in the way I define them. Because neither, IMO, require a great, or even a significant, amount of athletic ability.

It's skill, sure, but not a sport.

I would include it to the list of skill and not sports such as bowling, pool and golf.

Actually, Nascar is both a skill and a sport, or as i like to define it, a Skort.

Wow what you know, a Sports Guy topic invading the rf.net board! What is the world coming to?

It's a spectator sport with some skill, you need to know how to drive in New York streets. That is the breeding ground for the best racers in the world. Period, end of story!

it's both you need skill and stamina to compete and be effective if you think that a nascar driver is not an athelete try sitting in a car that the cockpit is 130 degrees for 500 miles.

I don't enjoy it and have a hard time calling it a sport. I consider it more of an event.

However, it is more of a sport than figure skating or skateboarding. Any sport that needs judges to determine a winner just sucks. I exclude boxing because at least the fighters have a chance to decide the outcome themselves before putting it in the judge's hands.

Ok so half of you on this thread apparently listen to those two afternoon idiots on NJ101.5 that constantly make fun of NASCAR racing. I work in the sport of auto racing as a videographer. I have been to Daytona and Dover, but have been to many local short tracks in the area. TO a certain degree, nascar is skill. Like driving 4 wide at Talladega 3 weeks ago for 186 laps without wrecking until the final lap. Can you out there drive 4 wide inches apart at 192 mph? I think not. On some of the other tracks, I think anyone can get behind the wheel of a race car, and with a good pit crew, have a legitamate chance of winning. I think nascar, and all racing is a sport, since it involves so much with so many different people. The driver, the crew, the crew chief, the spotter. However, the BEST SKILLS are found at your local short track. I have worked at the Central NJ speedplant known as NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY for the past 4 years as a videographer. Our track is a 1/2 mile TRI-OVAL DIRT. Skill? TO keep a car sideways at 100 mph through the corners without spinning, flipping, or wrecking into other cars takes a LOT OF SKILL. AND, FURTHERMORE, our local tracks are more exciting than the high dollar sport of NASCAR RACING. Here we see over 130 drivers and cars compete in 3 different classes of racing on any given saturday night from april to october in front of 2-3000 local fans. IN fact in the springtime I invite anyone from the board to witness dirt track racing at New Jersey's finest, cleanest, and classiest speedway, NEW EGYPT.
