Well it's 12:54, and I don't know where my children are. Also, yes I am drunk. I just realized that while I was using the back and forth buttons that I created a bunch of the same threads accidentally while posting. My apologies. Any sober mod please feel free to delete the others.
But mainly this thread is not redundant but in fact inspired by a recent thread.

I don't even think there's a question about the top three. The NFL, Nascar, and the MLB are so far ahead of every other sport in terms of popularity that its not even close.

i think they way you listed was perfect
nfl is first
followed by college football
then nascar
then mlb
now some would argue that nascar is second and college football 3rd but in terms of answering your question those are the top 4

I want the NFL Back Now

I also took the top four.
Funny thing is, my buddy and I were talking the other day about how much the NHL, NBA, and NCAA Basketball have fallen in the past 10 to 15 years.
There's a ton of reasons why, but I find it amazing that a sport's popularity could drop so dramatically in such a relatively short period of time.
i said nfl, mlb, nba, and ncaa football
i voted mostly because i've never noticed that you could mark more than one option in a poll

Issues arise when you are comparing pro leagues with college, NCAA overall or broken down and of course what constitutes a true sport or a game/event. And what are we ranking this on, attendance, % attendance at arenas, tv deal, tv ratings, swag sales, loyal fan base, state of the league, or a number of other factors.
One thing we can all agree on is that the NFL is easily #1, pretty much in all those factors. With MLB #2 and NASCAR close in 3rd but slipping of late. But do you count NASCAR the same way? Many writers and fans don't. However, it's #4 that gives me the biggest problem. As you can tell I'm not really factoring the college ranks, but if I did this whole thing goes out of whack.

Yeah I ordered them in the order I guessed they would rank, seems to be the consensus. Reason I chose the top 4 is that I grew up always hearing the media describe the "Big 4" leagues as NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL. I don't think that was ever really the case.

Without making it too complicated by comparing merchandise sales, arena attendance etc.. I would just say pick the sports that generate the most public intrest. The league that has the most hype generally will lead in all of those figures you mentioned.
That's why I would give both NCAA leagues equal footing in such a rancking. The major schools rival most pro sports franchises.

But it's soooo different when your using the factor of alumni and loyalty to your school. The big schools have how many graduate each year? And even the chess club, theater kids get into school teams as it's part of their college experience. It's always amazing to see the kids that hated sports in high school turn on a dime when they get out and start attending a big school like PSU, FSU or Cal. It's always funny to see the band "love" the game in college.

these were my picks, although i enjoy them all. i don't see this nascar popularity that people are talking aboot. it's still waaaay more of a fringe sport than the nba. i see it as a fad that will diminish quickly, and that's even taking into account i don't think it's as big as people are acting like it is.
edit: 21 of 22 picked the nfl. the other dude isn't being honest, or it was a protest for the lack of PiMB.

i'd say that the idea of the big 4 did exist in the 60's, 70's, and 80's, maybe even early nineties
but then march madness, college football bowls and nascar exploded up the charts
