i was just thinking about cover songs and wondered which covers you all love and hate... my thoughts:

good: travis (or fountains of wayne) doing britney spears' "baby, one more time". bad: britney spears doing the stone's "satisfaction".
good: mike ness doing bob dylan's "don't think twice". bad: alien ant farm doing michael jackson's "smooth criminal".
good: orgy doing new order's "blue monday". bad: limp bizkit doing george michael's "faith".
good: lagwagon doing van morisson's "brown eyed girl". bad: marilyn manson doing soft cell's "tainted love".
good: elliott smith doing john lennon's "jealous guy". bad: snake river conspiracy doing the smith's "how soon is now?"

I always loved Bauhaus' cover of "Ziggy Stardust."

Britney covering "Satisfaction" is just so wrong on just so many levels!

I like Guns N Roses' versions of Knockin' on Heavens Door and live and Let Die much more than the originals, and the Wallflowers cover of Heros by David Bowie is better than the original as well. Also, Nirvana's cover of Man Who Sold The World was good too.

My current favorites are:

Tori Amos' new album "Strange Little Girls", which is an entire album of covers, done Tori style.
Coal Chamber's "Shock the Monkey" (with Ozzy!)
And A Perfect Circle's "Diary of a Lovesong", which is an emulsion of Ozzy's "Diary of a Madman" and the Cure's "Lovesong". It's fantastic performed live!

Bad covers are "Faith" by Bizkit (because ANYTHING they do is HORRIBLE), and also any techno-dance mix cover of any song.

snake river conspiracy doing the smith's "how soon is now"

I don't mind that cover at all (probably because I enjoy SRC), but I have to admitt that the original is better.

The Wallflowers over Bowie and Eno? I think not!

The Ramones were one of the only bands who consistently either did the original justice or actually made it better. I love their remakes of "Do You Wanna Dance?", "California Sun", "Surfin' Bird", "Baby, I Love You",.....the list goes on and on.

And I'm with Heckler on the "Heroes" thing; The Bowie/Eno original can't be topped!

Tazz : Good call on the Wallflowers and Nirvana.

A few covers I liked ( heard them courtesy of Napster ) were :

The Flys : Crazy Train

The Nixons : Rocket Man

Matchbox 20 : Nothing Compares 2 U

Matchbox 20 : Time After Time

( I know those are a little gay, but they brought back good 80's memories, LOL )

Pearl Jam : Baba O'Reily & Roadhouse Blues

Soundgarden : Come Together

Class Of 1999 : Another Brick In The Wall Part 2

( I dont care what people say, as great as the original was, this was still a kick as version. )

Hootie & The Blowfish : Hey, Hey What Can I Do

I have balls !!!

heh, some I've always loved....

Aerosmith's "Come Together" and "Train Kept A-Rollin"

Spineshank's "While My Guitar
gently Weeps"

Life of Agony's "Redemption Song" and "Don't you Forget About Me"

Type-O-Negative's 7-minute long version of "Paranoid"

Paradise Lost's "How Soon is Now"

Bloodhound Gang's "Tricky" (RUN DMC)

hm, that's all I can think of right now...

Maybe, but the Hendrix version is where the buck stops, even Dylan said it was the quitesential version > Jimi made the song his. Probably the most covered song is Yesterday by the Beatles.

<i>"hey girl germs, where can i hear that weezer cover of aneruysm"</i>

i have the cover on a mix cd my friend made me. i bet you can download it off some napster type program, though. if not, i can send it to you (not through e-mail, though, unfortunately). if you have aim, you can send me an instant message at whenever i'm logged on and i can send you the mp3 file that way.

by the way, it's aneurysm. just letting you know.

another cover i really enjoy is bratmobile's cover of "where eagles dare" by the misfits.

Good: Elvis Presley (tha king baby), doing "You lost that loving feeling" I fel that the King did better than the original...any song I hear remixed now is bad...there is no new good songs with out it being emixed, so dont even talk to me about revamps...know what revamps are...last ditch attempts by record companies to recognize what is cool and what isnt...and the sad thing is they dont...
