I know a lot of you are from New York so I got a question. I have an opportunity to take a job in Albany and I have never been there (or anywhere in NY). Is it nice? Is it a cool city? Dont compare it to New York City, compare it to the rest of the country. Is it clean? Stuff to do? Thanks guys.

well, if you cut out NYC, then yes it's a fine city. fairly clean. a bit of a college town without that typical college town feel.

ofcourse you'd be upstate.......

I went to school there and had fun. I don't know how it is to be grown up and live there. It was really fuckin windy and cold alot though.

It's a miserable pisshole. Blocks and blocks of boarded up buildings. It's the type of city where it's always cloudy and grey.

The suburbs are fine if you're into that whole Applebees/Barnes & Noble scene.

According to Lily, Albany is about 70% muslim.

I liked Albany. Its not too big or small, there's a good amount of stuff to do, and there's a lot of tourist spots nearby (saratoga, lake george, etc). It gets cold in the winter though.

from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albany,_New_York#Albany_and_its_environs_ranked_ag ainst_other_cities):

# Forbes ranked Albany the 18th best place to live and do business. (2006)
# Forbes ranked Albany the 30th best place for work. (2006)

i've never lived there, but to me it's a bit boring/depressing. small-town without all the small town charm.

thanks. the only thing that scares me is the cold. Ive lived my whole life in Texas and Louisiana. I'm freezing just thinking about it.

Albany Is OK For A City It's Size. But If You Like Country-Side, Go Any Direction From Albany And All You See Is Beautiful Scenery. You Can Be In Vermont In An Hour Or So, And Boston In 2 1/2 Hours. Upstate New York Has Some Of The Most Beautiful (And Historic) Areas In The Whole Country.

If The Choice Is Texas, Louisiana Or Albany, Just Choose Albany!!!!

(Unless, As Others Said, You Don't Like Winter).

I'm from Buffalo, where the snow is at least equal if not worse to Buffalo, and no it's not going to snow from sept to may. you might get a little in October, and it will probably snow in the beginning of April. But I've seen winters in Buffalo where it didn't snow until december so you never really know.

we had a bad storm on oct. 13th that knocked down trees and powerlines all across the city. i personally was without power for 6 days. it sucked because it was the powerline to my house that went down, everything was very localized and took forever to clean up. i spent a lot of time in the bars that week watching hockey.

I realized that as I wrote it, but really that was freak storm and in most ocotber's if you do get snow, it probably won't even stick to the ground. I think Buffalo gets enough shit for the weather that you shouldn't write of the month of October because of one very freaky storm.

There are definitely worse places than Albany, but it does get cold.

If the job is good enough, you can find something to like in Albany.
