My relationship with my girl friend of one year and 6 months ended suddenly and I need some music that'll be good for this time in my life.

If you want to cry, almost kill yourself, hate yourself, and eventually move on. Anything by Tori Amos pre 2005

it depends on what you like and what you're looking for the music to do for you...music to cheer you up, i can't help you with...but if you're looking for a good dose of self-pity with a jack daniels chaser there is no better break up album than Derek and the Dominos Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs...actually it's probably one of my top 5 albums ever....from start to finish every song becomes meaningful...even the reason the album was created is heart wrenching (Clapton wrote most of the songs because he was in love with George Harrison's wife)

Umm ... NOT "Hey Joe."
Other than that, turn up any song and it'll make you think of your situation.
Seriously, you'll relate your relationship to the Star Wars Cantina song if you have to.

Back in college, after a particularly bad break-up, I listened a lot to Pearl Jam's song "Black."

Ahhh Keithy.... I feel for you. But I'm going to send some different advice.
After so many breakups that has left my heart blackend and jaded like a volcanic landscape, I'm going to suggest that listening to sad songs while you brood alone isn't the answer. I've done that. And now when I look back I can't wait for that time machine so I can go back and kick myself in the ass.
You're young, and feeling down right now is only natural. But remember, there will be other ones. There will be better ones. It might not seem like it now, but there will be.
I'd suggest get out and do something with friends. Take a trip to the shore. Great Adventure. Join some kind of club. Volutneer. Live life... it's the best way to treat yourself.

Beck - Sea Change... insanely depressing disc. Believe he wrote it going through a divorce.
<img src="http://arnim.blog.is/users/04/arnim/img/the_mountain_goats.jpg" border=5>
The Mountain Goats - Get Lonely... kind of more obscure, but this guy is fucking great. All his albulms are, but this one has more of a "feeling bummed" vibe.

Shouldn't listen to too much elliot smith when you are depressed, or you may wind up doing something <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pyBB7y8fDU" target=new>crazy like this</a>.

They're actually ym favorite band. Really cool guys too. They never seem to dissapoint me. I post now because my relationship has really come to an end now. It was just a whole lot of waiting and flip flopping going on before.
And now that it's over I don't want to listen to Alkaline Trio because it'll remind me that I'm hurting. Eh, maybe Good Mourning will be ok.
But, an album not to feel much of anything too? Dropkick Murphy's "Do or DIe". Tiger Army self titled is pretty kick ass too.

I'm actually seriously considering volunteering at the hospice where my grandfather passed away. It's a depressing thing to do, but I think it'll be a rewarding experience as well. And hell, maybe I'll learn some stuff and it'll help me grow as a person, and maybe even as a writer.

Keith...In my last break-up there were a lot of "bad feelings" so I was listening to a lot of fast and loud music to get me through. I was going to recommend some of this music to you, but I don't get the feeling you're in the same state I was. After the adrenaline wore off, I went back to my collection. ANY Widespread Panic is good. The Band is good, Jerry Garcia Band is good. But blues music is what really helped me. If you like guitar-work try maybe Big Jack Johnson & The Oilers "All The Way Back". A great harmonica album that is quite upbeat is Sugar Blue's "Blue Blazes".
I wish you the best....

It just came out, and it's pretty much based on the dissolution of his marriage.

I'm gonna go way off the beaten path and nominate Fastball's Harsh Light of Day:

It's a concept album about a breakup and how to get over it. Of course no critic in the world was bright enough to figure that out.

It's terribly embarrassing but anything by (West Hartford's own) Chris Carrabba ie) Dashboard Confessional and especially the album by his first band Further Seems Forever entitled The Moon is Down...That will get ya.

I did it for a few months and don't regret it a bit. I drove a lady back and forth to chemo - poor thing. I'm not sure where your head is at but if you feel up to it, it will be rewarding. In the end I imagine you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did do as they say. Best -

Overkill is a great song. Unfortunately, that song was in Scrubs and Scrubs always remidned me of her for some reason. It sucks how I have to disassociate everything from her now when I spent so long relating everything to us and her.
I just lsitened to Let It Be and it did make me feel better. Was never a big fan of the Beatles, but that song always stuck out as being truley a work of art rather than just a song.
Also, Clutche's "electical worry" is a pretty good tune to just blast.

"Night On Earth" by the Bouncing Souls also is helping me. Of course, she always loved that song too.
"Before It's Too Late" by the Goo Goo Dolls is a terrible song to listen to right now. Never was a big fan, but I heard them on Leno last night and I figured I'd try it out. Really depresses me. I can't stay depressed while she's fine, though I'm positive she's faking her being ok.

my last break up saw me listening to alot of Van Der Graaf Generator (http://www.vandergraafgenerator.co.uk/), in particular, "Pawn Hearts (http://www.sofasound.com/vdgcds/phtlyrics.htm#1)" and "Godbluff (http://www.sofasound.com/vdgcds/gblyrics.htm#1)"

So fucking good. And, I never attached her to them. So, good for me.

let me preface this by stating that I am NOT a fan of country music but...a few years back, when in a similar situation, I was advised to listen to random Patsy Cline songs. I picked up the greatest hits and some of the lyrics are just fucking fantastic. Listen before you immediately react...seriously good shit..
