Fuck you, David Chase!
I'm getting in on the ground floor of this thread.

I'm really not sure what to make of this show. I like supernatural stuff and all, but this show seemed to be all over the place and no one seemed to be completely freaked out that someone could float or that a dead bird came back to life.
And as soon as that gay guy started rambling at the hotel when he was holding the gun, all I could think to myself was "here goes David Milch again with these crazy dialogs that are impossible to follow, just like on Deadwood."
That said, I'll keep watching in hopes it makes more sense in the future.
it wasn't bad, but didn't blow me away. too soon to really bite into it, but that's just how hbo is. they know that they can let a show build its audience, not cut it in four weeks like the networks if it isn't a smash. plus, it's got elsworth in it.
i'll watch next week for sure.

Definitely kept my interest. John seems to just reciprocate whatever is around him whether its verbal or the ability to surf. His character is hilarious. I like the noir-style surfing aspect of it too. The last few surfing scenes alone were worth checking out just for the visuals. I hope there's some sort of reason to the bird coming back to life and the levitation but if i can watch Lost, i'm in no rush for answers.
Louis Guzman has a fucking GUT!!!
I fucking love Ed O'neill. I dig him in just about everything he's in.
Miss Luke Perry....

I think this could be a good story based on the family and their story along with the other supporting cast. I dont understand what John has to do with it and dont think they need his character to make this show work. Like I said the storyline about the surfer family and all that has happened to them and will make a good enough show. John was actually starting to annoy me with his robot like ways and repeating everything. I will continue to watch it to see where it goes.

there's already too many posts in this thread for me to act like I was amongst to say how great this show was. Damn. So I'll go in the other direction, just to be different.
This show fucking blew. Who the hell does David Milch think he is? Just because he came up with Deadwood, one the best show's HBO has ever put on and he's from my home town, he can't keep putting this crap on the air. IT STINKS!!!

I'm probably going to end up watching it twice more before next week. I'm not saying it was the best hour of television ever but something about it I just find fascinating enough to want more of it. Maybe it's just the thrill of a new show that I want to see that has a crazy different vibe that makes it almost like a brand new toy. It has the new toy smell, you don't know what all the buttons do, you're putting it away until tomorrow when you can play with it again.
John from Cincinatti is my new toy and I haven't had a show like that in awhile.

I thought some of the characters were rather interesting but there was obviously some sort of contest to see who could chew up the scenery in the biggest fashion. The strung out surfer dude made me want to hit him. I like the John character and actually like Al Bundy's character but Rebecca DeMorney was the winner in the overacting contest.

Episode 2 is up already? That's strange (like this show). HBO On Demand used to only put shows up after they had aired.
Oh, by the way. John, what will he turn out to be? Alien, Time Traveler, Demon Spawn from the Netherworld, Rain Man, none of the above?
I have to go with alien at this point. The whole strange pants thing and not having a real grasp on the language is what has me thinking that.

I liked it enough to keep watching. I want to know what the deal is with John, and why he can produce anything from his pockets and the other weird things he does.
You can definetly tell this is from David Milch from Deadwood in the the way the show is done with all of the "fucks" and weird speaches.
"I went ahead and ordered for the table" vs "Somethings I know, and somethings I don't know" Which is a better statement?

Mine gets screwy sometimes too, it gets cluttered up with shit for some reason if you use it too much. Unplug it, wait ten seconds, plug it back in, once the clock shows you can turn it back on, then try it. Every time mine starts moving slow, I do this and it's good as new.

I'm sorry, but this show is a trainwreck. If not for the kid getting hurt towards the end and John saying stuff like "I gotta take a horrendous dump" or "Did you dump out today", I would have shut this off. Now I gotta watch to see where it goes with the kid.
Speaking of, is there a worse actor on the face of the Earth than him? Christ! I know he's young and all, but I've seen younger act circles around him.
There just seems to be too much going on at once and they never bothered to even introduce the characters properly. I mean, who the fuck is Luis Guzman supposed to be besides the former owner of this motel? What is Ed O'Neill's deal and what is his relationship with the Yost family? And what is this dyke Kai's deal? Plus, the dialog is ridiculous. No one ever talks like these people do, but I blame that on David Milch who did the same thing with Deadwood.

i lived in HB for eight years and it's funny, all surfer kids i've met at that age are like that, their just like this Shaun character, laid back, quiet, mellow, and if you take a kid with that demeanor, and use it as a character on a show, i could easily see how that might look like he doesn't have much range. from my experiences, they got this kid right.

Oh, I knew there was something else I wanted to add about Shaun's character. If he is supposed to be this surfing prodigy and the "next big thing", then why was he copying what that one kid was doing with his wax as if he had no clue what he was supposed to be doing himself? And then he was surprised when he saw the other kids laughing at the kid waxing his board, so Shaun stopped.

b/c it was his first competition. He knows how to wax his surf board, but he was looking around to see what he should be doing at an event like this. Hes a kid and wants to fit in. He doesnt know hes a natural, great surfer. All the adults do. He just wants to surf, compete and have his dad come see him and be apart of his life.

Two episodes in, and I still dont' know what to make of this. I won't say exactly what happened at the end of the second episode, but my feeling about that is that I can either see it taking us into really sort of weird, interesting realms, or just becoming utterly and completely cheesy.
This is a show that could be either brilliant, or just utterly pretentious horseshit. It all depends on what happens when we start getting some answers to just what the fuck is going on here.

Well, I watched episode 2 and I gotta say that I'm starting to dig the show.
ditto.
I had to stop 20 minutes into episode 2 cause I just had enough. Every character is way too over the top and I have never been into surfing thus I am not naturally drawn to it. For whatever reason I picked up where I left off the next day and the shit hit the fan on the show and I began to finally really enjoy it.
Maybe there is a reason why every character is over the top but I really could go without the lotto winner. He seems like he is in there the same reason a sitcom has a side story, because they are worried the main ones are not strong enough.

OK, so I just watched all three John From Cincinnatti's last night (here and ever after referred to as JFC)
I dig it. It's quirky, disturbing, funny and plain wierd. Kinda like me. MrsAssHat and I started watching the first one last night around 10 or so and were up until 1:30 which is way past my bedtime. It was well worth it.
I think all the characters are still trying to find themselves, but you can see the potential. I LOVE the Ed O'Neil character, Bill and Steady Freddie Lopez could become one of my television favorite bad guys.
There's some great dialog exchange between these two and, in general, between all the characters.
Loved the John and Kai exchange:
JFC: I'm going to bone you, Kai.
Kai: You're one smooth talkin' city dude...
This just in, Rebecca De Mornay is still hot.
BTW, since I work at a cable company, whenever someone has asked me a question today, that's how I answer.
VP of Sales: AssHat, what're your projections for third quarter installs?
Me: I don't know Butchie, instead.
Rest of team: Raucous Laughter.

1. The theme is "Johnny Appleseed" by Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros
2. It's already been shit canned by HBO. It seems they are not happy with its performance and cut back the episodes and will tie it all up real soon. Instead of leaving fans wondering like Carnivale and Deadwood.

This show gets better each week! I thought this past episode was excellent, especially Ed O'Neill's "Bill" character. Line of the night: "May this pain come to Clinton for disgracing the oval office!" All the character's places seem to be coming together now, and I was surprised the "physician" looks like he'll be one of the regulars too.

John is Jesus.. God And he came here to save the Yost family.. He heals.. He produces everything you ask him to do.. He knows shit that he was not there to see.. The see God Kai thing.. Dillon is the Devil.. The signing kids is not really signing them but taking their souls.. Like he did with Butchy.. And wants to do with Shaun.. Thats why John says to Dillon, the end is near.. meaning his evil.. This show is more interesting and more different than any other show i have ever seen..

I'm hooked.
I really hope HBO doesn't drop the ball on this one.
Some very good writing.(although I'm a sucker for anything with religious overtones(?) like this)
There was a line that absolutely had me cracking up, but I can't quite remember how it went.
Bill: "I'm her on orders of my bird."
pause
Freddy: "If you're waitin' for me to ask you what you're talkin' about, plan on fallin' over dead before I do."
That line was one of the greatest things I've ever heard.

I love her. Im so glad you posted this lol. During last weeks show I was telling my cousin that she has moved up to #1 on my list of celebs I wanna bang. I dont know what it is about her. I never like blondes, but she seems so sexy in the girl next door kind of way. Everything about her I like. I cant believe Kate Beckinsale, Eva Longoria, Minka Kelly and Jill wagner all moved down a spot!

I have a question for those who feel Ed O'Neill's acting is superb in this show. Simply put, why do you feel this way?
I personally think his scenes are awful, especially his dialogs with himself when he is alone. It just screams of incredible overacting to me.
I don't see it as overacting at all. He's a straight-laced by the books former cop whose wife died and now all he has is his birds, particularly Zippy, who I'm willing to bet was his wife's birds to begin with. He's lonely, and probably had nothing to do until John showed up. I love his scene with the bird. "I got my fish-eye on you!" "That is a whole 'nother kettle of fish". I think his character is very well written, and he pulls it off beautifully.
Now, I still can't fathom what John wants Cass to work on, nor what exactly the Hawaiian and his broken hand partner's role is in the story, but the scenes are just interesting enough to want more.
According to IMDB, there were only 6 episodes made, so next week is the 6th. I guess we'll find out next week sometime if HBO will continue. I really hope they do.

I think she definitely has a future, though I'm not 100% convinced this show does. It seems like there are too many characters and they keep throwing in new ones.

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/images/cass.jpg I thought she was hot but there was something when she was hallucinating and looking scared that made me think "holy crap that girl is fantastic."
I think it's the blonde hair + arched black eyebrows (eyebrows are very important) combination that does it for me. Add a cute worried look to that and that's a trifecta.

I didn't know what was going on with this episode but God help me, the cookout epitomizes why I love this fucking show.
Now baptize that fucking pistol!
I don't know, with each episode I'm finding the show more and more interesting.. I am aware of the bad acting and I can't defend it in any way, but just the wierd religious overtones catches my attention.. I was checking out an IMDB board and I was reading some cool stuff someone posted.
For Example, John's last name is Monad. According to Wikipedia:
Monads are non-extended, soul-like, metaphysical simples. Every material that exists, according to Leibniz, is composed entirely of monads. These monads have no causal relationship to one another, or to any other monads, and are moved about (and appear to affect each other) through what Leibniz called pre-established harmony. In other words, without God overseeing and directing every action of every monad, the entire universe would fall apart.
Our souls are of a special kind of monad, termed dominant, or rational, monads. These dominant monads give us consciousness, which is a reflection on what happens to us, and which Leibniz terms apperception. All other simple monads have two basic qualities, appetite and perception, while some monads also have memory.
Monads are eternal, having existed since God created each one, indestructible, and immutable.
Also for those who missed or wanted to read John's little speech from last night, someone also posted it on the IMDB board:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Here is what John says in his sermon at the end......
Ramon says "Who's hungry."
BEGIN SERMON -
John says "If my words are yours can you hear my father? Can Bill know my father keeping his eye on me? Can I bone Kai and Butchie know my father instead?
(John takes Mr. Rollins out of room 24)
My father is shy doing his business. Kai helps my father dump out. Bill takes a shot. Shaunie is much improved. Joe is a doubting Thomas. Joe will save not Aliman?. Joe will bring his buddies home. This is how Freddy relaxes, cup a joe and Winchell's variety dozen.
Mitch catches a good wave. Mitch wipes out. Mitch wipes out Cissy. Cissy shows Butchie how to do that. Cissy wipes Butchie out. Butchie hurts Barry's head. Mr. Rollins comes in Barry's face. My Father runs the Megamillions.
(John stands in the roped off area in the courtyard. Then he enters Cass's room at her hotel to get her camera. Then he tells Linc it's time to get back in the game.)
Fur is big. Mud is big. The stick is big. The word is big. Fire is huge. The wheel is huge. The line and circle are big. On the wall the line and circle are huge. On the wall the man on the wall makes a man from the circle and line. The man on the wall makes a word on the wall from the circle and line. The word on the wall hears my father.
The zeros and ones make the word in Cass's camera. In the word on the wall that hears my father in Cass's camera, the good one Mitch cacthes doesn't wipe Cissy out. In the word that hears my father Cissy shows Butchie something else.
In my fathers word Cissy shows Butchie and Shaun. In my fathers word Tina raises Shaun at lunch. In Cass's camera Butchie lays the cord out for Barry and Mr. Rollins watches and he doesn't come on Barry's face. In Cass's camera Butchie knows Kai has kept the faith. In my fathers word the wave lifts them up.
(John draws a stick man-like figure on the ground)
In Cass's camera Bill doesn't bump his head on the stairs.
(Bill says he cannot do this, he's being stupid and he then climbs his spiral staircase and plays his harmonica)
In Cass's camera as long as Bill is being stupid Bill gives Lois a kiss.
In his word in Cass's camera the internet is big. 9/11 is big but not every towel head is eradicated. In his word we are coming 9/11/14. In my father's word Bill sees how Freddy relaxes.
In Cass's camera Ramon wants to know who's hungry in the courtyard and room 45. In my father's word to come, in Cass's camera, Dr. Smith calls Ocean Properties. In Cass's camera to come my father stares not Aliman? (the vato) down and Freddy sees Bill much improved (as they play their intruments together).
You will not note my fathers word nor remember Cass's camera but you will not forget what we did here today." - John
- END SERMON
Freddy then says to Polanca "And yer even ugly than Abraham Lincoln". Polancs replies "Which happens to have the same birthday as mine 2/14/64. Freddy says "yeah, a hundred years later."
Barry says "We should have these cookouts more often." Butchie tells Kai "Let's go find the space commander".

I called my wife at lunchtime just to check-in with her. She's a physical therapist and couldn't answer the phone because she was with a patient.
When she finally called me back, I gave her the old: "What's the matter? Were you too busy sucking some nigger's prick?" Hilarity ensued.
Last night left me baffled, though I'm still definitely hooked.
To quote my wife after it was over: "I hate this show. I hope HBO doesn't renew it, because if they do I'm still going to have to watch it every week just to know what's going to happen."

Well that episode got really trippy didn't it?
I'm guessing the whole sermon ending happened in John's mind while he was asleep, a kind of "here's what I'm here to do" list. But I also feel he did appear in front of Cissy. And WOW what a revelation about her!! Acid is a hell of a drug.
I guess you could go through he sermon line by line and figure out each character's place in his mind. But I think I'll wait for someone else to do that. I do have to do some work each day.

I fear that I may be getting a little obsessive about this show. I saw this on that JFC board. Try entering different searches and see what you get. Some can be interesting. Jesus=Link.
Also, when you search God you get a billboard that references Luke 11: 9-14. If you recall in his monologue, John talked about 9/11 and said something about 9-11-14. Get out your bibles, folks, and start doing some research. I'm still trying to figure it out.

Here's the Bible verses mentioned above:
11
What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?
12
Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
13
If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit 5 to those who ask him?"
14
He was driving out a demon (that was) mute, and when the demon had gone out, the mute person spoke and the crowds were amazed.

I was three weeks behind because my tv died, but I've now caught up.
2. It's already been shit canned by HBO. It seems they are not happy with its performance and cut back the episodes and will tie it all up real soon. Instead of leaving fans wondering like Carnivale and Deadwood.
Swing and a miss.
That seems like a very popular opinion, one that I agree with. Although, now I think that all of the characters are some sort of biblical character, set in modern times.

One thing that worries me about the show is that last week's episode really required the kid who plays Shawn to actually act, and he's terrible. That whole little thing where he said "I wish Zippy hadn't kissed me" and then covered his eyes was just embarassing.

I am a hell of alot more intrigued about JFC then I ever was from Sopranos. After the 3rd season, watch Sopranos almost became just cause it was on. Almost how Entourage is getting if they don't do something big. I never really looked foward to Sopranos until it was over and then just to see how it ended.
The shows are no where near similar, and if you asked me tomorrow would I rather have one more season of JFC or 10 more seasons of Sopranos, I'd take the JFC season

JFC definitely intrigues me. It has a lot of the same kind of mystery that LOST has (which I love). Where people are actually looking up biblical references and reading deeper into the show. And I do love the show.
Soprano's was a sunday staple. And I was hooked on it like drugs. It fell off from the earlier seasons, but it didn't matter since I was addicted. JFC is filling the void, in the timeslot sense and the well-written drama sense.
I'm switching my addiction from one to another. And the new one is pretty good too. But I like it for different reasons.

I understand your point. First who really trusts reviews? I hate reviews of movies and they are usually the opposite of what I like. But most important everyone doesnt mean the whole world but if I know a lot of people and they like the show and they tell me that everyone they talk to likes the show and on and on then doesnt that mean a lot of people are watching?
All I know is they better explain everything in this last episode. I need answers and closure.

My thoughts exactly. I've watched this from the beginning, and now I'm more puzzled than ever.
Not only were no questions answered, everything was confused that much more.
Like who the fuck was that used car salesman that knew so much about them all? Had we ever seen him before?
The only question that got answered was one I had: "Was I wasting my time watching this show?"

is that what he said?

did a search for 9-11-14 and got this
11When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here,[a] he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. 13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death,[b] so that we may serve the living God!

I am so intrigued by this show, it's all over the place and out there - but there's something oddly fascinating about the storylines. I love how these people are all connected now, and at one point weren't. As the shows have gone on more people keep coming into the fold around the hotel and story gets deeper.
It seems like the show is dead, but I really hope by some chance it does make it's way back.

I keep thinking about the connection between Mitch and Shawn, of how Mitch has the power of levitation and Shawn rose from death and in the last episode seemingly from the heavens with John before ending up surfing the waves at Imperial Beach. Nothing as significant seems to have happened to Butchie other than him getting closer with Kai and straightening himself out.

In an effort to try to figure out this show, the opening song lyrics...
Lord, there goes Johnny Appleseed
He might pass by in the hour of need
There's a lot of souls
Ain't drinking from no well locked in a factory
Hey - look there goes
Hey - look there goes
If you're after getting the honey - hey
Then you don't go killing all the bees
Lord, there goes Martin Luther King
Notice how the door closes when the chimes of freedom ring
I hear what you're saying, I hear what he's saying
*Is what was true now no longer so
Hey - I hear what you're saying
Hey - I hear what he's saying
If you're after getting the honey - hey
Then you don't go killing all the bees
What the people are saying
And we know every road - go, go
What the people are saying
There ain't no berries on the trees
Let the summertime sun
Fall on the apple - fall on the apple
Lord, there goes a Buick forty-nine
Black sheep of the angels riding, riding down the line
We think there is a soul, we don't know
That soul is hard to find
Hey - down along the road
Hey - down along the road
If you're after getting the honey
Then you don't go killing all the bees
Hey - it's what the people are saying
It's what the people are saying
Hey - there ain't no berries on the trees
Hey - that's what the people are saying, no berries on the trees
You're checking out the honey, baby
You had to go killin' all the bees

Unfortunatley, if the show is not renewed (and I still haven't seen an offical statement), that song is the only thing that will last for me. I loved the show and the characters, but too much was left unsaid for it to ever stand alone as a one season show.

I don't know how much the lyrics have to do with the show, but it's such an amazing song. Can't get it out of my head after R&F played it today.

And, with the end of the show, aside from the tidbit that Butchie used to carry groceries for Bill Jacks' wife, we still were never given any background on him or why he is tight with the Yost family. Absolutely piss poor character development in this show.
And what the hell did Howard Hessman have to do with anything? How about the car salesman guy? Who the fuck was he? Did we really need to be introduced to two more characters from Hawaii at the very end and then have no clue what any of that was about? And God's big plan was for Dickstein to finally get a blowjob?

as for your first post, yes he did. Bill decided to look after Butchie when he got in trouble cause his wife said oh thats the nice boy who used to carry my groceries. So Bill kinda got tight with them watching out for Butchie

I haven't seen an episode yet. I missed them for a while but I always intended to start watching from the beginning on HBO on Demand. Then I heard it mgiht not be renewed so I waited. Now that I see it isn't should I even bother? Was there any closure at all? Did they leave you hanging as bad as Carnivale? or Deadwood?

the show was so fucked up that it was great. The characters and story lines were all over the place, yet fascinating. I would say watch it because it was so enjoyable. But no answers are ever given, you will never understand what its about and they give you know closure. Brilliant show but leaves you wanting and needing to understand and know more but never do.
Every week I would look at my cousin and say "wtf was that" or "did they explain anything this week? No answers but I tuned in every Sunday night.
Make your decision, but if you watch it you may be pissed you get no closure. Enjoy, let us know what you think!

I think it was both. I grew to really like the show, but here's what the execs/programmers at HBO thought.
It was an experiment. It failed. It was our attempt at LOST. No one gets it. No one is watching. It's cancelled. Next?
The viewership for this show must of been abysmal.

I am really upset that it's gone. I loved the vibe, I loved the meaning, I thought it was smart and funny and I was genuinely interested in it and the characters. And S2 looked like it would have been amazing. Stupid HBO. First Carnivale, then Two-Seasoning Rome, then this?

Steven Hawk, a writer for the show writes an article on HBO.com every week that gives a more in depth explanation of every episode. He had this to say about the car dealership scene.
The scene in which Linc (Luke Perry), Jake (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and John (Austin Nichols) buy an El Camino from the Dealer (Peter Jason) at the Cherry Oldies car lot is probably the most important puzzle-solving moment of the season. It's not my place to provide a line-by-line interpretation, but I can say this: If you sensed that the car-buying sequence provides some clues about why John has come to Imperial Beach -- and about the show's fundamental cosmology and intent -- trust your instincts. Here's a transcript, with narrative from the original script:
So you say it was pointless, writer says it was the most important puzzle-solving moment of the season.

I completely ignored this show for the whole season. I missed the first few episodes and then never cared about catching up. Then I saw that HBO has a JFC podcast available on iTunes, complete with ipod video version of the pilot. I downloaded it to have a little content to watch while traveling. I finally watched the pilot last week, and it intrigued me enough that I watched the next 6 episodes over a two day period. I went into it knowing that the show had been cancelled and that there was no real closure, so I'm not expecting any real letdown from the finale. It's a very intriguing show that sucks you in even if it's tough to get a handle on what some of it all means. I'm not surprised that it's gone, though. Even on HBO, it would have had a tough time finding an audience.
Oh yeah, and the Yost kid is a hideous actor. I guess they wanted a kid who could really surf and skate, but he drags the show down with his inability to do a simple line reading.

Yeah, me too. I saw her name flash on the end credits during the final episode and I said to myself "Did that just say Jennifer Grey?" I had no idea what role she could have possibly played. I had to go and look it up online to confirm I wasn't seeing things. Nobody makes Baby suck a dick under the covers.

I don't know if I'll be picking it up though, considering so much was left unanswered. It would just be too frustrating to experience it's greatness again only to have it cut short.

I finished it yesterday, goddamn was that a great show. There are a lot of really brilliant shows out there that you can watch or catch up on on DVD or whatever, especially from HBO, but there was something about this show that really made me happy. Like I can't think of any other way to say it, it literally made me happy to be alive and made me feel really warm and elated on the inside.

Since it's a bump night I may as well bring this up cause I'm watching it again right now. And I think one of the reasons I love it so much is because in a weird way it is at its core a show about how people love each other.
