OK well I've finally decided to join the rest of the world and get an iPod but I do have a few questions.

My g/f also has an iPod Nano so would we be able to load them both on the same computer ?

Would we be able to have/not have the same songs load each time we connect our individual iPods ?

I'm going to store the actual music files on an external harddrive so will she be able to pick the songs she wants to go on her iPod and I can chose the ones I want ?

Where do you get your mp3's from? If they are DRM free you can do whatever you want, but iTunes has some restrictions. I believe you can put songs from one iTunes account on as many iPods as you feel like.

I'm mostly, to start with, be transfering CDs that I actually own.
I was planning on loading them all on to the harddrive so that if God forbid anything ever happens with the iPod I can just reload them.
My previous MP3 player I didnt have to store the CDs on the comp as it allowed you to uplaod them straight from the CD.

If you're thinking of getting one of the 30/80gig video ipods you might want to hold off for a while...the next generation will be coming out soon so you could opt for the newer model or there will be a price reduction on the 5th gen...

You can pick what songs you want to put on each individual ipod from the same iTunes, on one computer, all you have to do is disable the automatic update feature on each ipod first...

The external hard drive has to be connected for iTunes to work otherwise it will say it can't find the songs...

If you can resist, don't even install iTunes. Use ephpod, or something similar that actually lets you use the iPod properly.

Well there are stories all over about how buggy iTunes is. My wife has it installed on our desktop for her iPod (which is garbage). I used it a few times when her iPod still worked properly, and it just seemed concerned more with selling .mp3's than managing a private database. The user-friendliness was "for sucks" compared to database managers that I use for my Neuros II.

It takes some people a long time to get used to iTunes.. for some reason the Apple hate is ingrained in people that are Windows users somehow :D

I think it's because people want it to be drag and drop and by default it isn't, it's set to do playlists. You can easily change that by hitting "manually arrange the files on my iPod" or something like that.

I've loved iTunes, and my iPod, from the second I started using both. I carry it everywhere I go, not just to listen to music, but it's a great way to easily carry photos for those times when people ask to see photos of my daughter.

Personally, I don't hate Apple, I just hate the iPod/iTunes franchise, which is ingrained from the DRM bullshit and the garbage aftermarket products like Belkin's iTrip that could have been included in the iPod for next to nothing. Both the home and auto chargers($50) for the iPod, as well as the iTrip($50), fell apart about 4 months in, and the iPod itself
($250) is losing files. My wife barely used this hunk of shit, and she doesn't constantly drop her expensive gadgets like I do mine.

I'm not saying most people don't enjoy their iPod, but my personal experience with ours is atrocious.

well, i have had nothing but positive experiences with my ipods & itunes. sorry you're having so much trouble, but i don't think those results are typical.

Yes, according to Apple, you can have up to 5 computers and 3 Ipods on one Itunes account.

Would we be able to have/not have the same songs load each time we connect our individual iPods ?
It's easy to have different music on your Ipods. Just creat separate playlists for each Ipod.

I'm going to store the actual music files on an external harddrive so will she be able to pick the songs she wants to go on her iPod and I can chose the ones I want ?
Yeah, just like what I said before. Make sure you create two playlists, one for you and one for her. Drag the songs you want in each playlist and then have that list uploaded onto your Ipod.

That's cool.

I was concerned that the auto update would either put all of her songs on my iPod once I get connected and over-write mine ( which will have considerably more songs )

Now should I install the iTunes to the external harddrive only or should I install the application on the computer's harddrive and just have it access the sogns from the external drive ( if that second option is even possible ) ?

my iriver started dying on me, and i had an ipod photo from work just sitting in a box ... i never really did anything with it, for my disdain for itunes -- i like to manage things through windows explorer, and really didn't want to re-tag and format thousands of songs

i looked into some plug-ins and share/freeware, and they seemed to be itune variants -- i was looking for windows explorer interface ... i wound up paying $30 bucks for anapod (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod), and it's been worth every penny ... transferred 6,300 songs in less than a hour in a familiar fashion

now i just need to get comfortable with an ipod's functionality

OK so I bought the iPod the other day.

I've installed iTunes on the comp's main harddrive and I began adding the CDs to the external drive.

It told me I needed to have an iTunes account in order to get the album artwork and when I went to set it up they wanted a credit card. Now at this point I have no intention of buying anything from them I just want to transfer all my CDs to the iPod.

Do I have to pay for the art work ?

I only farted around with it for a few minutes but how do I change the music type ( Alternative, Rock, etc ... ) that iTunes automatically selects ?

Some of their choices are very vague even for the same groups/music types and I want to keep them similar.

OK back w/ another question.

I have a cd which has like 7 albums burned onto it and when I put it in iTunes doesn't do the noraml thing where it asks me if I want to import the CD ( with the name and the track names ).

So what I did was copied and pasted those, through Windows Explorer, into the main folder where all the music is. I did nthis because I thought that when the iTunes player went back and viewed that folder it would then capture the new songs. I was then going to highlight the new tracks and do Get Info so I'd have the name/artist/etc ...

That didnt happen.

What I did next was Import Track and I had to do them one by one as it wouldn't allow me to multi-select.

Is there a way to do this in a much simpler fashion ?

I'm sure it has something to do with how the songs are on the CD I'm copying from because all other CDs, that were burned and not originals, came over w/out a problem.

Try File > Add Folder to Library and point to the folder where you put your mp3's. It should then load them into your iTunes library and let you put them on your iPod. Whenever you add other mp3's to that folder you can Add Folder to Library again and it will add the new files it iTunes.

Everey reference I went to must've kept taking me back to the Pro version.

Any help with a link directly to the free version ?

I tried 10 different links from a Yahoo & Google search and in one way or another they all ended up asking for some type of payment before I could download.

Limewire.com seems to look good. I went through all the steps for the basic version and didn't have to put anything in.

Ok back with a few more questions.

is there a way for me to get my Seinfeld DVDs onto my iPod ?

And I'm still having problems loading music on to my fiance's iPod w/out it asking to overwrite what I have on mine.

I unchecked automatically synch and it still refers to the songs on my iPod.

To rip the DVD try Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) (download the windows graphical version)

I've ripped 3 or 4 things today using Handbrake and following these instructions (http://howto.diveintomark.org/ipod-dvd-ripping-guide/) and it's worked fine. When you have your file completed, just drag it into itunes and sync your ipod and you should be good to go.
