radical islamic author takes on darwin (http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idUSL0852496120070608?feedType=RSS). my favorite part was when they described darwin's theory of evolution as "widely adopted" yeah, by everyone but the kooks!

Then we've got a lot of kooks in America. Enough, in fact to make this guy qualified to be a Republican presidential candidate.

Poll shows belief in evolution, creationism (http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-06-07-evolution-debate_N.htm?csp=34)
Two-thirds in the poll said creationism, the idea that God created humans in their present form within the past 10,000 years, is definitely or probably true. More than half, 53%, said evolution, the idea that humans evolved from less advanced life forms over millions of years, is definitely or probably true. All told, 25% say that both creationism and evolution are definitely or probably true.

Poll results: (http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/2007-06-07-evolution-poll-results_n.htm)
A. Evolution, that is, the idea that human beings developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life

Definitely or probably true: 53%
Definitely or probably false: 44%

B. Creationism, that is, the idea that God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years

Definitely or probably true: 66%
Definitely or probably false: 31%

At a May 3 debate of GOP candidates, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee indicated they did not believe in evolution. The subject has arisen repeatedly since then.

Muslims probably believe in evolution less than we do simply because they've got the New and Old Testaments and the Quran to reinforce the idea that God created man with Adam and Eve. The Quran reinforced the story and so it's one more reason for them to reject evolution. And nowadays educated Muslims use the internet to view the works of American creationists and adopt them with the rationale that "I learned this from Americans." It's just part of the story I've learned about how much the Muslim world uses the internet to seek our views on the world. When I wrote about people refusing polio vaccinations for their kids in Yemen one of the rationalizations I heard was from a guy who had read an American Christian organization that was anti-vaccination. I checked out the website and it was an elaborate site with tons of information. It was obvious to me it's underlying premise was bullshit, but it served the needs of the handful of vaccination conspiracy theorists around the world that led to a global outbreak last year.

The same goes for politics: Muslims read right-wing anti-Islamic diatribes on Fox, Commentary, The National Journal, and whatever right-wing hayseed paper that's on the internet, and take it as how Americans hate Muslims. Then they find the left-wing horseshit like Michael Moore, Noam Chomsky, The Nation and Z Magazine and cite the examples of how America is responsible for all the evils in the world.

On the other hand, there are whole classes of Muslims that take the sensible information from America and use it to argue moderate peaceful positions. It goes both ways. But the degree to which we put out crazy talk effects how the outside world thinks about us and the world. It all matters.

And on the evolution issue, Muslims and American Christians are remarkably similar.

First paragraph of story; PC:

WASHINGTON — Majorities of Americans in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll say evolution and creationism are both likely explanations for life on Earth — underscoring the complexities of an issue that has put Republican presidential candidates on the spot in recent weeks.

Non-PC Edit:

WASHINGTON — Majorities of Americans in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll say evolution and creationism are both likely explanations for life on Earth — an indication of epidemic clulessness and science illiteracy on such a wide scale national newspapers have to use bullshit non-statements like 'underscoring the complexities'. Wow are you Americans fucking stupid. Look America, science isn't easy, boring teachers and parents who really didn't know are partly to blame but sheesh crack a book; it's advanced thinking, if you want to do more then scratch the surface. This Universe of beauty and wonder and atoms comtemplating themselves and the bastion and citadel of galaxies, all the Joy for Eternity and Infinity... But no, Paris taking a shit in a car is more important to you America, Paris gives your lives purpose and meaning, and all the time a Universe you are utterly fucking unaware of looks at you and gasps, 'Holy Living Fuck they actually place themselves in cages...'

i don't have a problem with people ascribing to a theory of god and evolution, i only have a problem when they deny the evolution part. when people say this, what i've heard is they're saying god created the universe of beauty and wonder and atoms contemplating themselves and the bastion and citadel of galaxies and evolution was one of the rules he set up for everything. kinda like you can believe in god and gravity, they're not incompatible. (i've never heard that latter one, i just thought of it now.)

Great, now we have Muslim Hayseeds.

Now that, is fuckin funny!

I can't stand it when people link Darwin's theory to governmental social or econimic policies, "Hitler and Mao were Darwinists!" That's like blaming a brutal beating somebody took with a baseball bat or a golf club on baseball or golf. Well, maybe that's not the best analogy, but I think you get my point...

Claims such as the above would not be so easy to make if people understood, even a little better, the format of the theory.

And on other issues as well. Basically, for both, it's all about "What Would Jesus/Muhammad Do?"
