Do they actually happen or pan out?
I mean if your willing to put in work and so forth can you actually achieve the job that you always wanted to be?
Or are there not enough spots in major leauge baseball, on the space shuttle, on the fire truck and so on?

I always wanted to be an effeminate radio sidekick.

Teacher.

I have been working my way tirelessly towards this goal. I did not realize it as a calling until after college, and thus made it quite difficult to secure employment. But I am not giving up. I just have to be convincing enough to a potential employer that someone who has been "in the working world" for over a decade can be an effective and inspiring teacher, versus someone who went the traditional route.

I thought NJ had a program to help business professionals transition into teaching. There was some type of "streamlining" program where they would forego teaching certification, provide a "special" certification, or allow you to teach while getting your certification. Something like that anyway.

It may not still be active, because I think I heard about it when I was in college, but I will see what I can find.

Over the years I've had many ideas for dream jobs, but they'll never happen.

Hockey player-My highschool didn't have hockey, so I was basically done(that and knee issues).
Veteranarian- Can't deal with giving needles, etc. More schooling also would kill me.
Animal Control- Wouldn't be able to deal with the asshole people who abuse their animals.
Radio- Nearly had a heartattack when I almost went to a school in Minnesota that was extremely expensive.

List continues.

Since I was about 10, I wanted to do stats for a professional baseball team (yes, I was and will always be a nerd)

I ended up becoming a high school math teacher and am currently working in Southern Illinois as a tech specialist for a school district where I teach a couple of math/computer classes on the side.

Not too far off the beaten path.... except for the big pay!

I have always wanted to be a comicbook artist, but I have very limited drawing ability. I would love to be able to draw heroic figures and bring my dreams to life on paper.

I guess that is why it's a "dream job" for me.

Writer. But a good writer. Like a novelist/occasional columnist. Decent pay (if I'm good). Prestige. Not really having to deal with that many people. Days free if you want to work at night. Just you and a computer/typewriter.

Damn my utter lack of talent! And connections. And ability. And zero interpersonal skills.

Hopefully my career path leads me to my dream job.

thats awesome MB. i just finished up my master's in education this spring, still writing my thesis this summer. i love teaching. you have to have the right mind set to do it though. it takes a certain type of person with patience to deal with a lot of kids you come in contact with. are you in a teaching program now? or are you looking to get into one? good luck with your pursuits.

though i love teaching high school, my ultimate dream job is to be a professor of history at a college level. ill probably go back to school for it after ive been teaching for a few years and can make some money. im also sick of taking classes and needed a break from it.

you sound perfectly qualified to me I think you have to be very charming to be a succesful hack writer. Dan Brown must ooze charisma.

I also think being a stand up would be cool (again, no talent). I love the idea of having a job where I travel. And when I say travel I don't mean to nice places. I would much rather go to shithole towns in the middle of nowhere staying in places that are below motels. That always seemed the best thing about being a special agent in the X-Files. Investigating crazy shit in the middle of nowhere. But that job doesn't exist. . . to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks Week. My goal is to teach HS English. I am passionate about literature and want to open the world of a great books or poetry to students, but beyond that English is crucial to students. I cannot tell you how many people do not even know how to begin writing simple letters, or communicate ideas succintly yet thoroughly, or S-P-E-L-L, not to mention properly utilize grammar. Drives me nuts and I want to do something about it! It starts in HS, regardless of the nature of your postsecondary ed (college, trade, or other).

I am starting with an alternate route cert program in NJ and will eventually finish the Master's I started sooooo long ago.

Best of luck with your goal to teach in college. I used to work in education administration at that level. It can be extremely rewarding if your head and your heart are in the right place.

nope, I was in a public library, in the young adult/children's department. loved it hard core. i'm working as a nanny right now to save up $$ to get my masters in library science (it's a science, who knew?), so that I can move into the upper echelon of knowledge.

My two dreams growing up were Chef, and Radio host. Two fields which take an incredible amount of perseverance, talent, luck, and years of dealing with crappy salaries and hours in order to "make it big". I ended up in IT. I am one of the few people who doesn't mind his office job and I am happy I made the decision to go the safe route career wise.

im going back to school full time to be a massage therapist. i quit my "real" job and now work at a spa. the pay is much less (thank god for student loans), but it's great experience for me to see how things are run and what kinds of things to expect, and the therapists there are very helpful, friendly and encouraging, and because it's less hours and more of a bs job, i can focus more on school than i would have been able to with my last job. yeah, now i dont have a pot to piss in but this experience has showed me that i made the best/right choice for myself. i actually love doing what i do, i've learned so much, have had so much fun opportunities, and changed a lot and met so many awesome people. only a few more months till i'm officially a licensed massage therapist.

I think anything is possible if you put your mind to it and are willing to pay the price. I didn't even know my job existed until I served as a student assistant in a Sports Information Office in college. After a few years, I decided to give it a try as a career. I worked one summer for a minor league baseball team, making $100/week and loving every minute of it, and then I took a pay cut to $25/week, a room in the back of an old gym and a meal card to serve as an intern at a college before I landed my first real full-time position. That was in 1987 and I'm still loving my job!

yeah, and a bulletproof vest and concealed carry permit comes standard issue with your contract in Paterson, or Newark, or Irvington....

Just kidding. Good luck to Mrs. Tub in her pursuits and if you want any info on the program I am doing through Jersey City University let me know - courses are taught at your local community college by university faculty, so students do not have to drive to JC for class.

I have a job for the 2007-2008 school year - teaching in Paterson, at the Charter School for Science and Technology. I'll be teaching English lit. The school has a comprehensive college prep curriculum and small class sizes. Charter Schools tend to attract kids who want to learn. I think I will still face difficult behavior problems, but the administration seems very willing to back up its teachers and work with kids to get them moving onwards and upwards.

I am pleased to be taking the big leap away from office work and into my dream job.

Thank you for the suggestion.

That sounds about right. I've always approached the dream job question from the perspective of not having to think about money and all that, but just what would I do if money were no object. I caddied for 10 years through high school, college and law school, it's a great job but unless you can hook yourself up with a guy like Tiger or Mickelson, it can a rough career.

I'd still love to do it at least for one season.
