I have a Jeep Wrangler and for the last couple of days I have been getting a vibration at about 55mph. It's smooth up until that point and it is smooth once I pass it. I think it may be either that my tires aren't balanced or maybe a ball joint. It seems to be coming from the passenger side front tire. Any opinions or suggestions?

is your steering wheel shaking too? that might mean that you need air in your tires because the tires arent leveled. that happened to me when i bought my very first car. after i filled up the tires, it was smooth driving.
thats all i got.

Could be your alignment.
It could be anything others have suggested, or it could be a tie rod or stabilizer.
Take it to a mechanic you trust and have him look at it.

I check that out Reilly. Thank you for the suggestion.

Would it only happen at the one speed with that if it was only slightly off? I thought it may be that but I eyeballed it and it looked good and the tires didn't show any uneven wear.

Actually, I guess my big question is this: I have to drive about 500 in the next few days, would you trust it?

NO.
because if it is your tires, you'll eventually blow out. Not safe.
if youre not sure what it is, you have to have it looked at especially if your doing a road trip like that.

Damnit. I'll bring it in in the morning but I swear, if I have to rent a car this weekend, I'm going to cry.
If a tie rod snaps or if your tire blows out you'll be out a lot more money than the cost of the maintenance repair or a rented vehicle.
The last thing you want is to break down somewhere and possibly bend your axle.

But the positive side is that you will avoid something that could possiblly turn out for the worst. Hurt yourself, hurt others or hurt in the pocket if something does fuck up.

Another thing is that you do not want to risk a blow out with a wrangler. My friend had a blow out and he ended up rollong it.

I know, I know. I figured I could just put it on two wheels like the General Lee.

it could also be a tire out of balance... that could be a sign of deeper (tire) problems though.
I would suspect the tire more then anything else on the

If you get the car to Al by 7:30 am (Tell him Tub sent you) He can have the whole job done by 3. Whether it's tires, alignment, struts, etc.
The point is, have a mechanic look at it before you go on a trip.

Sounds to me like Ball Joints, which also leads into GVAC's point of tie rods. I think you can make the 500 miles, but be prepared for the worst if you do chance if.

If it feels like the right front. Switch the front tires to see if the vibration moves with the tire, or move the one to the back. And go for a ride. If the vibration moves to the new location it's the tire or rim It could be as simple as a balance weight coming off the rim.

I say its unbalanced tires. That or bad alignment.

Shit, I should have updated this earlier. I dropped it off this morning and all of you who guessed unbalanced tires can pat youselves on the back.

Not so fast there champ. You guessed that the tire needed air not that it wasn't balanced.

right... balance means weight distribution of the wheel/tire... since the wheel/tire are moving at high speeds, and neither tires or wheels have an even distribution of weight (meaning not perfect), they will cause vibration as the heavier part of the wheel/tire comes off the pavement unless this diffeerence is compensated for by adding weight to the lighter areas of the wheel/tire.
