my apartment is hot as fucking balls right now and probably won't cool down until september. i have a fan blowing directly on me and i have an ice pack wrapped around my neck (im sure i look really fucking cool) and it is working nicely at cooling me down. what are ways you guys keep cool with no AC?

the house my apartment is in was built in 1903. the wiring wouldn't have the capacity to have AC running in the four apartments in the house without blowing fuses.

I've got central AC.

You could hang meat in my house.

My electric bills are astronomical in the summer, but I'd have it no other way.

I would definitely have to move. I couldn't even comprehend such a thing.
I have central air set at 68. My GF doesn't like it so cold, but she just puts on a sweater.

Same here except I do it with a heat pump.
What a fucking invention that thing is. My electric bill only goes up around $35
a month and I have it on 24/7 during the Summer months.

you have to make sure you have some windows open in the front and back of the apartment, or at least on both sides. The best thing besides a fan with no AC is a good cross breeze through the Apt.

Is that something like a swamp cooler. I have a swamp cooler but they usually only work well in low humidity areas.

It rarely gets over 20% humidity here so it works real well.

I'll have to Google swamp cooler and see.

I'm in the Poconos. Although the humidity is lower
than the surrounding city area it still gets fairly humid here.

No, it looks like swamp coolers are a completely different thing.

This Article might explain it better than I can.

F_S HATES Air Conditioning. The Heat Doesn't Bother Him (Unless It Is Over 90), Except When He's Trying To Go To Sleep. So Right Before Bed He Takes A Cool Shower And Hops In Bed WIth A Fan Pointing At Him And It Is AOK.

Built in 1903? Means you have Knob & Tube wiring. I own a duplex with that type of wiring. You can run AC, but you have to find a circuit with nothing else that draws a big load. You may only have two in an apartment like that, so find out which one the fridge is on and use the other (draw too many amps). Also the main Amp draw occurs when the unit starts up (compressor kicks on) and thats when you would blow a circuit / fuse.

If you really want to eliminate that big draw, I learned something when i had to hook up my AC after hurricane Charley using just a generator. There is something called a hard start kit that i believe can be installed in window AC units as well as regular home units. Talk to an HVAC person and see what they say. Altho a hard start kit can run 75-125$ but makes it so the compressor can kick over easier.

A time delay fuse might take care of that problem.

i found out yesterday that an attic fan is worth every penny and I would venture to say saves a bunch of utility money and keeps the place comfortable.

It was around 8:30pm, not long after the sun went down and I was helping a lady by bringing heavy containers up to her attic. normally the attic space would be like a sauna but she had the attic fan running and it was cool as the other side of the pillow and very comfortable. it made me realize her house was comfortable as well with no AC on. My Dad has the same place but no attic fan and it's intolerable in the attic and an oven in the house...

Attic fans are great.
I had one in my house as a youth.
They're only good though when the humidity and temperature are not too high.
On a 95 degree day with 90% humidity there is nothing that beats good old AC.

I convince my 5 year-old daughter that the "Bamboo Shoots" water ride isn't at all scary.

Then I subject my kids to the terrifying clown that lives at the front of the park.
