Okay not to sound like a jerk
(well maybe to sound like a
jerk) but do you know what
kind of turtle it is? There are
actually a few endangered
species of turtles in the
northeast which it is totally
illegal to keep.
And even if it isn't, and you
DO keep it, I hope you know
what you're doing because
obviously different turtles
have different requirements
as far as
food/habitat/climate/etc. go
and it might be a while
before you realize that you
aren't doing it right (like,
when the turtle dies)
because turtles and their
allies can go for a pretty
damn long time - especially
now that it's getting to be
winter - without eating etc.
and like you don't want to
kill Perry Junior do you???
email me if you need more
info on herps (not herpes)

Ditto what TooCute the herpetologist said. Wherever you found it, you should go back to the area and release it back into the brush near it. If you remember what direction it was headed in, take it that way because it may have a realm that it occupies. Sounds like you most probably found a small tortoise unless you fished it out of a pond. The thing could be fifty years old by the time it's around 8 inches long, and just won't take well to captivity. You may not find this out until it's dead. Just admire it, take some good pictures for us all, and send it back before winter sets in so it can go dig itself in somewhere. If you need any more info on herps (not herpes) then E-MAIL AYA. :)

i live in the mountains on 50 acers of woods. the turtle was chilling on the doorstep soaking up the sun. its black yellow and orange. drinks lots of fresh water. i set him free last night. and this morn he was back on the step..
my question is, how did it climb up on the step? ..

If it has a rough shell that's more dome shaped than smooth, it's a land variety, probably a Box Turtle, but they all live near water. It goes up onto your step to sun itself to heat it's body. If it keeps going up onto your step, it probably lives around 50 feet from your house. Now would be a good time to kill it before others come and they mass at nightfall and wipe out your family. Most carry weapons. Wow, where did that come from? But, all seriousness aside, it gets up your step very slowly (not a turtle joke) and since they can see really well, he scoped out that spot and now it's his favorite. I'm sorry, that was chauvanistic. Does it have a snatch? If it's a female, it's more territorial than a male, and her home really is nearby. You must have a pond or stream or something near your house. If you play with it in the bathtub, don't worry about the turtle biting you on the dick, unless it's green, because that variety is probably a vegetarian. If you really don't want the turtle on your step, paint it white and the turtle will never come back. I have a nice recipe for turtle soup if you want it, but you'll need six turtles.
For god sakes, somebody shut me the hell up.
Did it look like this?
