View Full Version : What historical artifact would you most like to have?

I spent the holiday weekend in Washington DC. It was the first time I've been there in over 15 years and as somewhat of a history buff I was saddened to learn that the Museum of American History is closed, until 2008, for renovations.
In the meantime they've taken some of the items from there and placed them in a temporary exhibit in a gallery at the Air and Space Museum. It's funny to see what they expect will interest the public the most, because while about 20% of the pieces are what I'd consider actually historical in nature, the majority are just pop culture items. Here are some examples:
Historical: Lincoln's stovepipe hat, Washington's Revolutionary War uniform, Benjamin Franklin's walking stick, Thomas Edison's first lightbulb, Mary Todd Lincoln's mourning gown, Sandra Day O'Connors Supreme Court robe, the actual lunch counter from the civil rights sit-in.
Pop history: Dorothy's ruby shoes, the puffy pirate shirt from Seinfeld, the very first Kermit the Frog (sitting right next to Lincoln's hat), C3PO and R2D2 models, Carl Yastremski's batting helmet, the laptop from Sex and the City, Archie Bunker's chair, the signpost from M*A*S*H, Mr. Roger's sweater, Ray Charles' sunglasses, a guitar from Prince, a Greenbay Packer Cheesehead hat, and so on, and so on.
So, in line with Dave's wish to get a hold of the destroyed Ten Commandment tablets, what historical artifact would you most like to have? Toots Shoore ashtrays aside.

You mean historical artifacts that actually exist?
I saw the treasures of King Tut's tomb this past April and he had a gold feather fan, which you would fill with ostrich feathers. On the head of the fan was a carving of him hunting and killing the ostrich in the reeds of the Nile. Bad-ass. Totally wanted that... along with a slave-woman to fan me, of course.
The knife that was on his body was really cool too.
There is a Roman chariot in the Met's new Greek and Roman exhibit which would be great to have a horse pull me around town.
A moon rock.
An Aztec calendar. The real huge stone one that would look great on my wall.
An Easter Island Moai statue.
Marco Polo's journal.
The ship's bell of The Bounty.
Something from the Minoan civilization. No weapons have ever been found, so maybe a vase, or ship's anchor. They are most likely the basis for the Atlantis myth.
Jesse James' pistol.

General Lee didn't surrender the whole confederacy...just the Army of Northern Virginia...
General Johnston surrendered the Army of Tennessee
And I believe the Trans-Mississippi Army just faded away....I think there was a surrender, but the last anyone saw of General Smith he was hightailing it to Mexico in a disguise

F_S Would Not Like The Responsibility Of Owning Anything Too Important Historically. He'd Just Give It To A Museaum To Keep Safe.
Fat Does Have A Few Fantasies Though:
1. To Find An Old Picture In The Attic And Then Take It Out To Re-Frame It, And Find An Original Of The Declaration Of Independence Or Gettysburg Address Under The Pic.
2. To Be Working In The Backyard And Move A Rock And Find A "Pine Tree Penny", The Original US Currency Which Is Incredibly Rare.
3. To Be Swimming In The Ocean And Dive Down And See A Glimmer And It Turns Out To Be A Coin, And Then Dive Down Again And Find A Whole Treasure Chest Filled With Gold Dubloons And Pieces Of Eight. Aye Matey!
But It Would Be The Discoveries That Would Be Fun, Not So Much Owning The Stuff. That Would Be A Burden!

-The Regimental Flag of either the original Fifth New York Infantry (Duryee's Zouaves) or the Thirty-Third Virginia Infantry
-General Washington's Hat or sword
-John Wilkes Booth's Derringer
-a bugle from the Seventh Cavalry used at Little Big Horn, or the original message written by Custer to Lt. Benteen during the battle ("Benteen come on. big village. bring packs")
-one of General Patton's Ivory-handled revolvers ("only a pimp from a cheap new orleans whorehouse would carry pearl handled revolvers!")
-the helmet worn by Matthew Modine in "Full Metal Jacket"
-one of Frank "The Capital Punisher" Howard's bats
-the Jersey worn by Frank Reich on November 10, 1984 during the greatest comeback in the history of college football, when the Maryland Terrapins rallied from down 31-0 in the second half against the Miami Hurricanes to win 42-40

Theyre named after Abram Duryee, who was a very wealthy Mahogany exporter, and the man who raised the regiment and was their first colonel....they were one of the best regiments in the entire Army of the Potomac...
At Second Manassas they lost over 330 men, including 124 killed in action, the highest total of KIA any regiment suffered in the war in one battle
And they had kickass uniforms too

My guess is Mr T's still driving around with it, calling people "Sucka" out it's window and it's got an orthopedic seat installed because of what all those chains have done to his neck and back over the last 20 years.

Hint: It smells like Jackie's O, which I for one don't want to smell right about now.

Uncle Ronny gave it to George Jr. I think he's keeping his White House crayons in it.

Michael Jackson paid cash for it at Tiffany's and was serving kids Jesus Juice out of it. You might be able to sneak in and get it but don't expect it to be Zoot and eight score young blondes and brunettes, all between the ages of sixteen and nineteen-and-a-half that you'll have to spank to get it.

They're archeologists. That's what they do.
