View Full Version : I Hate Earbuds!!!
PapaBear

I don't have large ears. But for some reason, my ears just weren't made to use ear buds. I've tried many different types, and the damn things just won't stay in my ears. It's rare that I use any sort of headset, and when I do at home, I have some decent "old school" style headsets. Still... it would be nice to have the option of having something I could use when I'm mobile.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Edit... I need the ability to wear a hat, and not have shit sticking in my ears.
Have you tried the "in-ear" variety earbuds?

Aren't all earbuds "in-ear"?
I mean something like this:

As opposed to something like this:
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/db/e3/f36b820dd7a0984a0dc0f010.L.jpg
The ones on top go farther into your ear and in my experience sound much better and stay in tighter. They go farther into the ear than the bottom ones.

I'm with you PB. Mine stay in ok, but after a long flight last week my ears were killing me, and I could barely hear my music over the jet engine noise. I just bought a pair of bose headphones today (not earbuds) and the sound is incredible. I will never go back to earbuds.

Hbox's suggestion looks good, but I'd prefer not to have them in my ears. I could live with it, if only I could try it out first. That's the problem. Every time I try a new pair, I have to actually buy them... only to find out they don't work for me. Too bad they don't have non working and disposable models that you can stick in your ear, then throw away when you're done trying them.
Tele's idea is good for the comfort and sound quality thing, but they don't really work when you're mobile. Also... I don't need to use them often. I don't want to pay Bose prices. By "mobile" I don't mean sitting in a plane. I mean being able to walk around and shit.

Have you tried the earbuds with an earhook like above? That should keep the earbuds in your ear.

My wife "mudfeeder" has the same problem. I always make fun of her for it, because every store we go to, she's on a constant search for the perfect headphones. My mom gave her a pair that came with her ipod, that have the rubber ends similar to the ones that HBox posted, she said those were decent, not perfect. There's also a pair made by Philips that I bought for her at wal-mart. They're the noise cancellation ones, and they have 3 different rubber attachments for different sized ears. Good luck

I have a pair of Bose that worked great, but they broke - plastic snapped near one of the ear phones. I did a little research and found that it was a design flaw. I think I saw a set in the store recently with a different design though.

highly recommend these if you decide to go in-ear
originally $149.99 but i got mine for $68. i just checked and they jacked the price up to $81. i'm sure if you play around with google products you could find them a little cheaper than that

http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-Isolator-Earphones-Black/dp/B000BQSGMM
with in-ear phones you end up using less volume and also since it blocks all the sound around you that also causes you to have to use less. the people who use the ones that come with ipods or other cheap types are causing serious damage to their ears
i'm pretty sure if you find a store that stocks decent headphones they should let you try them out if you ask

I got a pair of these about a month ago, and so far I really like them.
http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/products/2005/183/x183E2C-o.jpeg
They come with nine different in ear attachments (three styles with three sizes for each style) so chances are you'll find one that's comfortable and stays in your ears. Mine were $99 at Best Buy, but I'm sure you can find them cheaper elsewhere.

these are my fave. they have a cloth-encased wire that loops around the ear. it's a similar concept to the ones hbox posted (also by philips) but MUCH more comfortable. also, if anyone owns cats, they are not going to get bitten thru (which was the original reason i bought them). they only cost like $15-20.

i don't use headphones or earplugs, especially outside the house. i need to hear what's going on around me except for when I play music somewhat loud in the car.

i hate ear buds as well, they make my ears hurt, not comfortable at all for me. i prefer to listen on stereo headphones whenever i get the chance, i have a nice set of sennheiser's which sound absolutely fantastic. they are kinda bulky to wear out though. i found this set of skullcandy head phones which are extremely light weight and compact. they also sound really good. they are kinda flashy but i don't really give a shit. i think they come in black too.

OK, this is disgusting, but my ear buds get super waxy. I keep my ears clean, dammit, but I wear the buds on my way to work or school and it seems like every time I take them out there's some nasty wax on there. I'm sort of worried that this means something is wrong, or that the buds/volume is damaging my ears, because like I said, I clean my ears every day. What the hell?!?

i could have written the same thing word for word. the waxy build up on the ear buds is fucking gross even when i clean my ears every day.
papabear, the wrap around ones always made the back of my ears hurt, they kinda dug in and weren't very comfortable. just a thought.

What's worse is if you run with earbuds. You get a sweaty earwaxy liquid and it coats the inside of the earbuds and ruins them. I've gone with the clip headphones which sound like dogshit and shocks me. Does anyone have any suggestions for headphones to run with, cause mine suck?

Agreed. The Phillips behind-the-ear are what I use for working out and sleeping. They never fall out, they are very light, and the sound isn't absolutely atrocious(although an audiophile would be unhappy with it).

ive been through a lot of earbuds and so far i would say the best are the Etymotic ER-4B MicroPro Reference Earphones. they aren't cheap but are well worth it. i've had mine for 3 years and they are still great. they used to be the highest ranked earbuds at cnet but that review is gone now... link (http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones-headsets/etymotic-er-4b-micropro/4505-6468_7-31999106.html)

What's the difference between an audiophile and a non-audiophile?
A non-audiophile will occasionally buy something.

Do I have freakishly small ears? They always pop out and feel way to huge to fit comfortably. I was trying to listen to my ipod this morning and they fell out like 3 times in 60 seconds so I gave up.

I hate 'em. The small size are too small and the largest ones are too big. The medium ones come closest, but they're still too small and slide out from time to time. What annoys me more is the length of the wire...it's too goddamn short. I carry my iPod in my pants pocket, and unless I want to hike my britches up to grandpa level the short cord is often tugging the buds out of my ears. Bring on winter when I can wear a jacket again and carry the iPod comfortably.
And fuck wearing headphones and all the fancy wraparound contraptions when walking around. I already look like enough of a douchebag when I go out. Headphones in public make everyone look like the cockwipe of a guitarist from Linkin Park.

I went through a few sets of the sony fontopia buds but they weren't exactly robust and replacing them at $45 a pop every 6 months didn't make me happy so I have since switched over to these at $16 per set. I work with guys who spend most of the week talking about their fantasy football teams so I have to block the noise out.

i tried to wear them when i first got an iPod years ago but i had the same problem, they would always fall out after 30 seconds. in fact, im amazed that they stay in for ANYBODY. im marveled that people get those things to stay put.
Aggie, get yourself some Dr. Dre headphones from Bose. then you'll never have to worry about earbuds again.

i have to put the wire for the earbuds over and behind my ear, basically inserting the buds in upside down inorder to get them to fit.

JVC HP-FX500. All my packaging is in Japanese so I didn't know about the wood construction, brass ring, etc. The sound is great, the noise canceling is so effective I barely have to go half way on the ipod volume.

Try Skullcandy (http://www.skullcandy.com/) They have a display of them in Dicks sporting goods. If you live by Roosevelt Field, they are right when you walk in

Tiny ear-hole fan since day 1.
Just get whatever ear accessory you need in the "for kids" size; it usually works out better than the pain-and-pop-out alternative. Headphones, Earplanes, earplugs, condoms- I mean, earplugs.

I'm been the digging these to the point that I went out lastweek and bought 2 pair.
I don't know if they'd work for you"small earhole" people, though.

The ones that came with my Nexus actually made the skin on the inside of my one ear all sore.
They were the worst.

I spent $30 on a pair of, "surround sound" earbuds and though they sound great they are awfully uncomfortable and always fall out. Any recommendations?

My fav. Long wire from ear to ear that you let rest on the back of your neck. Excellent excellent sound, three different ear bud sizes that you can use to totally block out sound.

I'm looking for a good set of buds that would fit under a motorcycle helmet. The skull candy buds look like they might work. Anybody have any suggestions?

Just for fidelity I recommend the Yuin PK2s. I have pretty small ears though, so I don't have to worry about earbuds falling out.

I tried Mavericks by SnuggBuds and I really like them. My sis tried the BlinggBuds for iPhone and she likes them, too. Better and much more affordable than the other brands I have tried before. Also great for mtn. biking and skiing.

They come with nine different in ear attachments (three styles with three sizes for each style)
If the set of in ear buds doesn't come with a variety of size attachable ear pieces (most come with three) you can buy them separately at Walmart and Radio Shack. You don't have to pay $100 or more to get a set.
I refuse to pay that kind of money, since I usually break them. Most of the time I cut off the right bug and wear just the left. I need to be able to hear surrounding activity at work so this works best for me. A lot of time I'll have the left bud in my ear and people won't even know it. While they're talking to me, I'm listening to a Ron & Fez replay on my Inno.

This is the way to go.

They're 80 bucks but, you'll get a lot of bang for it.
These are dual-armature driver headphones. Each earpiece as a driver dedicated to bass freqs and another dedicated to mids/highs. (4 drivers total) There's a passive crossover in there to seperate the frequencies.
These are NOT diaphragm drivers. They are armatures. Diaphragm drivers (mini speakers) actually need an opening to allow air into the chamber. This is what creates the bass. Armature drivers (like those found in a hearing aid) are able to recreate bass without the need for a vent.
Better isolation.
Lower volume.
Better sound.
They're not for sale just yet but, I have other dual driver earphones (that sold for MUCH more than 80 bucks!) and they sound great. Lots of detail.

I just picked up a pair of the $25 Skullcandy earbuds the other week and I love them. Obviously, I wish I had the more top of the line buds, but for something affordable these blow everything else out of the water. The cord is longer, the sound is great and they don't fall out of my ears!

It also depends what you listen to. If you're just gonna listen to O&A and R&F talk radio shows you don't need high end buds. A $5 pair of buds is fine for talk, and they also make the cheap ones with the assortment of tips to fit in any ear.
BTW - If you have an Odd Job or Odd Lot store near you check out what they have. I've found XM accessories like boomboxes that sell for $100 or more for $5 at these places. The one near me has a huge selection of computer, and radio supplies. They have all kinds of earbuds.
I don't like 'em. They hurt my ears.
