Make sure you Recharge it before you freak out alot of times hey will freeze up as they run low on battery even if it says there is juice in it. Leave it plugged in a while and see if it fixes it. The Apple website has a good trouble shooting page beyond the recharge

It happend to me and I was told I have one of two things or both...a bad song ya down loaded with a virus...or the Ipod's hardware is messed up from being dropped, joggled, or wet with water.

It stinks.

I was told if its the virus thing ya have to wait for it to go dead. Then you erase it and only put songs from legit CD's or bought from Itunes.

If its Hardware it costs about $100 bucks to replace it at ony one of 3 places in Manhattan.

I wanted to step on it but I was told its not helpful.

Good luck Man!!

used to happen to me on occassion with my old ipod. Try hitting the reset. If you can't reset it, leave it unplugged until the battery dies. Then just charge it up again and you'll be fine.

i'm on my 3rd ipod in 2 years.
my hard drive is dying on this one, and apple refuses to fix it for me.

mine crashes about 1x a week. it freezes, and even reset will not work.
i hold it in my hand and give it a hard bang against the palm of my hand. when i do this, i can hear the hard drive start working again.

fuck apple.

Must be made by the same company that made Earl's mouse.

That's happened to me a few times.

Hold the center and menu buttons at the same time until the apple logo shows up.

My third generation ipod would freeze a lot, but my video ipod never has. I did all of the things mentioned above to help unfreeze mine. Also sometimes just docking it will help it as well.

Why does everyone buy iPods when they are known the blow perpetually? My wife's does the same shit, and on top of that all of the accessories like the car charger and the Belkin iTrip physically fell apart after a few months of use. The fact that Apple didn't include an FM modulator(which are tiny and cheap) in the iPod tells me that they probably accepted some serious dough from Belkin and others for accessory contracts. So you pay 50 more dollars on top of the inflated iPOD price, and the piece of shit falls apart.

My favorite iPod feature is that you can't access the .mp3's that you listen to to copy them to other computers. This is obviously due to the affiliation with iTunes, as it makes file sharing difficult for people who don't know how to get around it. Apparently the hard drives iPods use are rated for 20,000 hours of use, while desktop drives are rated at 750,000 hours, so using them for an external hard drive is not the best idea anyway. Also, most people use iTunes to sync their pod and that fucking invasive program can go fuck a duck. At least use ephpod.

It really says something about Apple's marketing that, despite all the negatives, iPod is still BY FAR the number one selling mp3 player out there.

I've got a 4G monochrome one that I've been using for about 2 1/2 years. I've been wonder what I'm going to do when the hard drive inevitably dies. It seems that most problems people have are with the hard drive, so I'm thinking it may be time to get a flash-based player for my next one.

I have the same model (got it when they first came out) I've had a few issues with the thing but I still use it everyday during work. I'm sure the HD is going to fail, hopefully before the 4 year protection I got for it.

because what you pay for an ipod and what you pay for an alternative mp3 player are the same, but the ipod steamrolls everything else in storage capacity.

they've got you by the short hairs because why pay $400 for say, 8g of space when you can get 80g of storage.

its like paying for the porsche and getting the neon.

Have you tried hooking it up to your ITunes?

You should also try dropping it a couple of times.

I paid <$250 for 40gigs on my NeurosII, plus I got an open source OS, a line in, a built-in mic to record different .wavs and .mp3s, no DRM problems, Og Vorbis support, and a goddamn tetris game. FACE!
