View Full Version : Verify the 30,000 Cancelations?

Can someone cite any sources on how many actual cancelations Xm has had due to the O&A suspension? I keep hearing these numbers like 30 thousand plus and i am wondering if this is true and where the facts are coming from. just curious.

I think these numbers came from customer service operators, which means that there's probably no way to verify, and you have to take what they say with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers are (sort of) accurate. What it may really mean is, 30k people called to cancel, but the majority of them agreed to the one free month.

Im sure xm isnt happy to lose any subscribers but 30K isnt going to kill them. they have 8 million + subscribers so 30K is nothing. I guess o&a arent the main draw as people think. If they fire them and lose 2 or 3 million then yes they had an impact. But as of now their impact on the compnay is shit. As long as they keep ron and fez.

it comes out to at least 3.2million per year, using the average cost per sub of 8.99. plus all of the lost subs due to phones being used by people cancelling, and also people not upgrading devices.

if they lose 2 or 3 million subs, they are done. XM will go under and be snatched up by someone after they file bankrupcy

exactly! $3.2 million a year to a company bringing in roughly 80 million a month and 1 billion a year in revenue isnt even close going to effect them. Sure they dont want to lose that money, but thats less then 1/2 percent of a years revenue. They will save 10 mill a year in payroll if they just fire them. Once the merger goes through they will be in great shape. Thats what this all comes down to.

JPMNICK

I think you might be missing the point. this is 30k subs in 1.5 days. not that the pace will continue, but that is a massive number. this could easily get to 100k by the end of the 30 days.

And remember that some of these are people canceling multiple subs. Some people have a radio per car and you can have up to 5 on a single account, most under the family plan

Just basic math and the internet. It helps! Its estimated that they have 8 million subscribers. you can muliply by their monthly service charge or the avg of $10 a month that they avg.

"Table of Contents
• Ending subscribers increased from 6,501,859 at the end of the first quarter of 2006 to 7,913,728 at the end of the first quarter of 2007.
• Total revenue increased from $208.0 million in the first quarter of 2006 to $264.1 million in the first quarter of 2007, a 27% quarter over quarter increase.

• Average monthly subscription revenue per subscriber (ARPU) increased from $10.07 in the first quarter of 2006 to $10.15 in the first quarter of 2007"

it's also difficult for a lot of people to justify throwing in the towel., when they figure in the money they've paid for their units. yeah, this is really a sunk cost, but most people don't think of things in those type of terms.

if you paid 200 bucks for a unit and had it around 1.5 years, that is only 10 bucks a month. not a huge deal, but I see what you are saying. the tech. investment is more substancial than FM radio which is everywhere.

i believe the person mentioning it said it had to do with signing up for discounted radios, then you have to stay on for 3-6 months, depending. actually, when i got my myfi december a year ago, i got it at a deep discount and would have had a fine if i didn't stay on for 3 months.

I had something similar when I did the "buy 1, get 1 free" with the Roady 2. You had to have the free Roady 2 on for at least 3 months. The only penalty was the price of a Roady 2... 50 bucks at the time.

yeah, cheaper to have it on for the 3 months than to cancel. with the new high-tag radios it's probably even more. my myfi, over a year ago was over $100 off retail, thanks to o&a's xmas deal.

The only way smashing a radio is beneficial is if the destruction is videoed and the video is seen by others. Otherwise, I think putting a radio on the secondary market would do more damage to XM than destroying it would. For one, the buyer would probably be someone who would otherwise purchase a new unit. By selling them yours, you've deprived XM of revenue. Secondly, a glut of used units on the market would have a negative effect on the price of new units. On the other hand, smashing a unit only increases future demand for new units.

Personally, I would hold on to my radio until the suspension was over, then give it to someone who had smashed theirs and now needs a new one.
