Thankfully, I have not. I've come upon bad accidents, a hunter who managed to shoot himself in the leg and sports injuries, but I never made "the call." No domestic situations...

With news and shows like COPS incorporating the frantic 911 to heighten the tension, have you ever been that voice trying to remain calm while all hell breaks loose in the background?

I've had to call many times. The only time I had trouble keeping calm was when my ex was 8 months pregnant w/ our first child. She was having some problems (I can't even remember what they were, now), and I could barely keep my cool when I called.

i've called once when I came upon an auto accident

in work we make international calls and you have to dial 9 then 011 first. so many times people have accidentally dialed 911. then our Security Dept gets a call from the police because usually the person who misdialed hangs up right away after realizing what they did

I called in a NON emergency once, because there was no other option. A late night cleaning guy accidentally locked himself into the lobby of the probation & parole office. It was either call 911 (so they could call someone with a key) or let the poor guy stay stuck in there for another 12 hours. It was kinda funny, though. He was pretty embarrassed.

I've called twice: once when my mom's stove caught fire (we ended up getting it exstinguished before the fire engine showed up... 15 minutes later), and last year when my now-husband wrecked my car.

I was born in New Port Richey. My parents told me to never brag about that though.
Thankfully I've never had to call 911, but my brother called a few times one night when I was babysitting him without me knowing. They called back and were very angry when they found out it was a non emergency.

When I was 4 I walked into my mothers room and didn't seem her sleeping there. I was scared so I walked outside and went to my neighbors house and knocked on the door and told them my mommy was gone. They called 911. A bunch of cops came to the house and found my mother who was sleeping in bed turned the opposite direction facing the wall.

that i can remember:

1) my best friends brother tried to kill himself (twice) he eventually did it

2) i set fire to my neighbors lawn furniture when i was a kid with a sparkler. (that wasnt a phun day)

3) a car smashed into a pole on tonnelle avenue while i was going in the opposite direction.

4) there was a huge rumble going on down the block from my old neighborhood with a bunch of guys.

i think thats it.

Christ Almighty, then what? Did she push Chuck E out of the way and run out? I thought your biggest hassle would be checking for all the pervs

I knew exactly where it was when I read your post. I grew up in Palm Harbor and have visited that McD's before.

I've only called twice, and both times were for the fire dept. while I was alone at work. My place of business is an old building in downtown Leesburg, Va and I used to work late at night alone. The first time there was a fire in the furnace--I turned the heat on for the first time that winter and smoke started pouring out through the vents. The second time I called I thought there was a gas leak--I kept smelling rotten eggs. The firemen checked it out and it turned out to be a broken sewer pipe in the basement! I swore it wasn't me who took the monster dump that broke it.

Only once. My mother started a grease fire, very scary. And another time I got a recorded message from 911 saying that they had a hang up from my house and were sending a unit. I was the only person home, I didn't call.

i've called probably dozens of times. i work in an old-folks home where old folks fall and hurt themselves (or worse). i called 911 last thursday--old lady with no clothes on fell off the toilet and busted her leg open. i have seen some pretty hideous stuff, my buddies.

btw, when you call, it's not like on tv. there it's, "911, what's your emergengy? We need an ambulance NOW!!! Ok, sir. we're on our way." in reality, it's a much slower process.

I hate when you call and the ask, "Do you need fire, police, or ambulance", or something along those lines. Dammit! I'll tell you what the problem is, and you figure out who to send!

yeah, they should be able to figure it out. but if they ask, you can decide: "My neighbor's house is on fire, but i don't really get along with him, so just send an ambulance and a tow truck."

btw, PapaBear, your avatar keeps me awake at nights...

Just Once. Thanksgiving morning when I found my mom having seizures on her couch. Definitely the worst day ever... one of them at least. I felt like a little kid...trying to figure out what to do first dial/stabilize/dial/stabilize... ended up doing it all at once somehow....

I was suprised I held it together so well in that situation.... so when I hear little kids being calm on 911, I am just floored.

Last Summer Around 2:00 A.M. F_S Was Awakened By Banging On The Door. Long And Sustained Banging He Could Not Ignore. He Wrapped Himself Up In A Sheet And Went Down And Peeked Out And It Was Two Cops Flashing Lights All Over. So He Let Them In And They Said They Were Responding To The 911 Call, And Fat Said It Was Impossible, That He Was Asleep And No One Else Was There. They Kept Looking Past Fat To Make Sure No One Was Pointing A Gun To His Head, And He Had To Really Re-Assure Them Before They Finally Left.

Next Morning Fat Called Them To Ask How This Could Have Happened...Long Story Short, The Air Conditioner Had Dripped Water Into The Fax Line. And The Fax Dialed 911. Very Strange.
