Ah Jives! Welcome and nice talking to you, but I must call Bravo Sierra on the Pulp collection- although a lot of it was recorded in the right period, Little Girl With Blue Eyes was never a noo-wave hit. Nor was the Lighthouse song. Or the song about masturbating psychopaths. Or Dogs Are Everywhere. It's like saying Felt is your favorite guilty 80's pleasure.

The countdown collection definitely has all of Jarvis' dirty laundry from the punk period and Russel's eastern european gypsy guitar period ... but I feel the remixed track "countdown" is an excellent example of new wavy dance hall beats.
Plus the lyrics don't make you want to pretend there are no lyrics.

Actually this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMCQNZk1RG0&mode=related&search=) is a better video from their last show in '89

Felt is my 7th favourite 80's guilty pleasure. Right behind Q Feel (the whole album. Hit=Dancing In Heaven), Eurogliders(whole first album. Hit=Heaven), Moev(first album. Hit=Rotting Geraniums), Frankie Goes To Hollywood (now this is important: not just Relax but the WHOLE album, all 4 sides, in order!), Freur(whole first album. Hit=Doot Doot) and Propaganda (whole A Secret Wish LP. Hit=P:Machinery). Felt actually had major British chart success with their "Primitive Painters" single in 1985 (featuring Liz Frazier of Cocteau Twins on vocals) which even made a splash in the undeground club scene across the pond. Felt then slipped back into the primordial ooze. But for the record, Felt DID manage to warm the brim of its pretentious bolero hat in the pale Albion sunlight for a handful of moons, as opposed to Pulp who DID, in fact, flounder in blatant obscurity until the mid 90's. Strange to think, considering that the first Pulp recording I have is on a British compilation from 1981! Alongside a great all synth cover of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" by a group called Sun Yama. Blatant Obscurity is my middle name. I think it's Dutch.

Wow. Lots of people from Portland on here ... and we're all attracted to the 80s music thread :)
I grew up in Vancouver, WA ... and I can remember being 14 and going to OZone on Burnside and picking up my first Pulp compilation along with some other random bargain bin CDs, popping them in my discman and wandering toward Coffee Time on NW 21st and just being blown away. Then I'd tune into the radio and they'd be playing, like, Bush and Foo Fighters. That stuff just didn't measure up.

Ozone split into 2 stores in 2002: Ozone UK and Ozone 3 (stoner logic). Ozone UK went belly up last year and I was just at Ozone 3 today for the start of their 60% off store closing sale. The end of an era...the end of an ear. Luckily Portland is so ur-nerd that we still have 10 awesome record stores. Portland is locked in an 80's timewarp. Speaking of which, I am going to go do the Time Warp, again....

No one's mentioned The Tubes or Oingo Boingo? How about Sparks???
New Wave was cool in 1979-1982. Then it became commercial pop and Metal was cool. Then that became commercial pop around '86-'87 and there hasn't been a good trend in music since.
There was still a lot of really good music that fit the category of new wave. How about DiVinyls, The Golden Palominos, The Plimsouls, The Smithereens or my all-time favorite, The Kinks???

"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"
Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you
That I'm in love with you"
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream
Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven

I remember New Order not being that great live. Anyone else go to this concert? I was about 12 when I went, but I passed for older.

Don't forget the 80s dance party got started in the 70s with the people who took what most musicians thought was a toy, the electronic synthesizer and releated drum machines, utterly new and now ancient looking.
To list the artists who cite Kratwerk as an influence simply does them injustice...
An old vid from 1975 showing some 'Autobahn' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5c81X6BiI0Y&mode=related&search=)
Kraftwerk toured a couple years back; selling out everywhere in minutes; the NY date? Utterly impossible. True minimalists too; you wouldnt think people would go batshit for four guys who spend an entire concert literally standing still at their computer/keyboard/drum stations:
Modern Kraftewerk plays the 80s Dance Song 'Pocket Calculator' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eI3gCWL-sY&mode=related&search=)

So, the 80's (otherwise known as Half the Playlist on my IPod):
Ministry
Madness
English Beat
Roxy Music
Clash
General Public
Big Country
Black Flag
There's so much more. Shit, in 10 years we're going to see all these bands on a PBS saturday night fundraiser.

Dude, that is bad ass.
It was pure luck. My grandparents lived in Ocean Grove so we were there a lot of summers and a kid like me at 16 could walk to Asbury, snag tickets, and see the show. Some of those were on a whim, I had absolutely no idea who, say, Judas Priest was as I walked in to see them in 1980. No Clue about Gabriel, and what he'd done, and would become. Those summers in Asbury 1978-1980s I also saw
Ian Hunter w/ Mick Ronson [Spiders of Mars] on guitar
Styx [yes, the Grand Illusion Tour, when 'Come Sail Away' was the new song]
Southside Johnny
Uriah Heep/ZZ Top
Blue Oyster Cult
Renaissance
Jefferson Starship
New Riders of the Purple Sage/David Bromberg/Steve Forbert
Bob Welch
I saw a lot of the 80s live; have more stubs and some pics but havent scanned them.

And more tunes:
Where's Captain Kirk? - Spizzenergi
I only knew that band as Athletico Spizz 80- That was the third iteration of the band, I guess- The Epoxies (pictured on the first post) really liked requesting that song at my defunkt 80's DJ night, New Rotic.
I am now experiencing 80's nostalgia nostalgia. Oh my God, I'm trapped in my own head!

It's kind of an endless 80's New Wave Dance Party on Fred this weekend as they count down the top 2044 "alternative" songs. They mentioned today that they are prohibited from listing the songs on the internet by broadcast regulations, which seems weird, but there it is!
Right now we are at 444 with Depeche Mode's A Question of Lust, every chubby gothgirl's second favorite Martin Gore song, next to Somebody.

This thread thread is bitter sweet. We had a club in my town called Heartbeat (Oyster Bay, LI). It's no longer there but I saw some great bands there.
The Ramones (at least a dozen times)
The Replacements (where I was witness to Bob Stinson's pantyhose covered nads)
The Smithereens
The Bolshoi
The Fleshtones (again, at least a dozen times)
And a lot of other great bands that never made it.

Ooh, I am jealous that you got to see the Bolshoi! Part of growing up in Texas is that cool things don't happen there.

Although I grew up in close proximity to NYC nothing much cool ever happened in LI.
OH! Another band I remember who played Heartbeat: The Church.

Gots to have Stop Making Sense playing on the vid screens at the party.
I saw 2 of the concerts on that tour.
First Byrne walked out with a boom box on his shoulder and an acoustic guitar and played "Psycho Killer" by himself.
Then with each subsequent song, another member of the band would come onstage and a riser was added behind them.
TomTom Club would do a few of their songs also.
The whole thing was really well done....
