My chick and I went to see Hot Fuzz today. While we waited and waited and waited for the movie, we saw like 6 previews, 4 ads for the snack bar and were told to silence our phones 4 different times. I do agree with the one phone reminder, but 4. The movie was slated to start at 4:35, it started at 4:55, so rediculous.
By the way, I really liked the movie. I will not compare it to Shaun of the Dead, but I really liked it.

really? that's odd. we saw blades of glory last night and there were like 5 previews and no ads of any ilk. i've never seen more than one silencer ad at a time, ever.

Thats one of the reasons I don't go to the fucking movies anymore. Holy fuck do they cram previews and commercials down your gullet.

i love previews and wish there were more. like i said i never had a problem with excessive ads, but i could see how that would be annoying.

I never go to the theatres anymore. The commercials are bad enough, but i can't deal with the noise. Like they talked about on the show the other day(or maybe it was ONA)... Why the hell can't they make packaging that doesn't make so much noise? I can't stand the sound of the eating, either.
Then there's also the two hours without a smoke.

Holy shit! I went to see Spiderman 3 with my kid today and I was floored by what I had to sit through. I was thinking about starting a rant thread - but here it is already. The movie was scheduled to start at 4:05. At 3:50 they start with this animation festival that AMC/Loews is having. I had to sit through three of the most unentertaining animation films I've ever seen.
Keep in mind the movie was sold out, so me and my son had to go in as soon as the doors opened to ensure that we got good seats together. We sat down at 3:30 for a 4:05 show but the actual movie didn't start till 4:30. So, we were sitting there for an hour before the movie even started.
Here's what I sat through (what I can remember, anyway):
- An animated film about a pencil fighting a pen for the love of a female pencil. If I was ten years younger and stoned, I would have loved it. But I was there with my kid.
- "The Swing" - unfunny and unmemorable animation
- Some painful animated short about a robotic mechanized band that plays awful music for 5 minutes straight
- A Wil Rogers abortion of a PSA starring Teri Hatcher and the fucking Muppets! What's this? 1982!
- A Fandango.com commercial. Fuck You, paper bag puppets!
- Look at all the tasty treats available at the concession stand! And don't forget to use our trash receptacles on the way out. Fuck No! It's all going on the floor!!!
- Walk, don't run, to the nearest exit. I guarantee you I'll be running and stabbing people along the way.
- A Marines commercial. God bless them. Semper Fi!
- A Coca-Cola commercial
- A commercial for The New York Times.
- A "turn off your cellphone" production brought to you by AT&T Wireless. I guess just flashing a sign would be too easy
- Then there was like a minute of just white screen and static as I think the original projectionist must have killed himself
- A coming attraction for a Jane Fonda and Lindsey Lohan movie that no one will ever see
- A coming attraction for the Pirates movie that gave away too many plot points
- A coming attraction for the Fantastic 4 movie. See comments for the Pirates coming attraction
- A coming attraction for Shrek 3 - same complaint
- A coming attraction for Martian Child - John and Joan Cusack - together again. Let me mark my calendar!
- A coming attraction for Surf's Up - Sweet baby Jesus! Another fucking penguin movie!
- A coming attraction for Bourne Ultimatum - ho-hum
- A coming attraction for some movie about the 60s which seemed to have a really good soundtrack. Oddly enough, this is the only one that interested me and yet it's the only one whose title I can't remember.
- Then finally, another major production announcing that the main feature wil be starting soon complete with a stick figure man made out of film strips extolling the virtues of AMC/Loews

when I went to go see the Lookout for a 10 o clock showing a few weeks ago I was about to go into the theater and I was wearing an Oakland A's shirt. The ticket girl said she was form Oakland so we started talking about the A's, Giants, and Bonds. I was talking while moving because it was about 9:58, she said, "Don't worry your movie doesnt start till 10:15."
I thought to myself, "shit, why dont I yuck it up everytime so I can figure out when a movie actually starts." I wonder if it is the same countdown, 15 minutes or so, for every movie.

it all went to shit when i started seeing commercials at the movies. Half of the reason for going to the movies is to escape the shit that happens in your living room. I can deal with previews but I can deal without the commercials and phone/trash warnings...Keep renting movies and maybe this shit will end. Mahalo

It used to be (as recently as the late 80's) that when a movie was scheduled to start at 7:00, at 6:50 they would partially dim the lights, show the previews and then they would lower the lights all the way and the movie would actually start at 7:00.
I don't mind all the extra crap, just start it earlier, I'm sitting there doing nothing anyway.
