I know I'm behind the times here, but I've decided to pick up an original Xbox. The last console I owned was a SNES so you can tell I'm not exactly a hardcore gamer. However I'm unexpectedly getting some money back from my tax return and I figured I'd indulge myself a little bit. However, I'm out of the gaming loop and I don't have a firm grasp of what's good and what isn't. Can anyone help me out? A few notes before answering:
- I have played the GTA games, Fable, Knights of the Old Republic, Need for Speed, the Hitman games and the Max Payne series on the PC, so no need to suggest those.
- I'm primairly looking for single player games
- I'm not big in to sports games, but when I do play them I prefer something more like NBA Jam rather than an indepth simulator
- I'm so used to playing first person shooters with a mouse and keyboard that I can't play worth a shit with the gamepad. Not saying I'm against trying but it would have to be something special for it to be worth the effort to learn.
So... What's good out there?

The Brothers in Arms games were really good...they're first person shooters, but you have a squad with you and you have to use World War Two fire and movement tactics to take your objectives, so its really fun and realistic in that way
I really liked Freedom Fighters...that game was a lot of fun to play
And Ninja Gaiden is/was and AMAZING game...one of the best games ive ever played on any system

do they even sell the original XBox anymore?
I always liked Full Spectrum Warrior (http://www.fullspectrumwarrior.com/)
a squad based RTS war game, it's a twist on the first person shooter, really good reviews across the board. Stay away from Full Spectrum Warrior TEN HAMMERS just yet,.. too many bugs i heard.

You ought to be able to pick up Celebrity Death Match in the bargain bin and it's a hoot. Seeing Ron Jeremy take on Anna Nicole Smith was HI-larious.

One of my favorites, Fable, you alredy mentioned so........
Jedi Knights: Jedi Academy(the sequel, Jedi Outcast was good too I heard, I never got a chance to play it though)
Any of the PS2 games you haven't played, as the graphics are a little better
And Jade Empire(one of the best action/rpgs I've ever played)
And I can't stand FPSs, but I've heard Halo is phenomenal.

Far Cry
(I think there's 2: Instincts and Evolution) Both very good one player story modes, and they also have a 2 player option if you ever make any friends.
And I also agree with Full Spectrum Warrior.

As a PC gamer who also thinks a mouse is key for a fps, I can tell you that Halo is worth dealing with the controller for. It will get frustrating at times but its a real cool game...
Did you try Kotor II? Its abit buggy but still fun...

Go for the first SW: KOTOR..first.
I always enjoyed playing the SW: Battlefront games too, although the team AI can really suck at times.
Another SW game, if you like squad control is Republic Commando.
Freedom Fighters is another favorite of mine.
