Let's suppose that you somehow found yourself marooned on a completely undiscovered land, or maybe even another planet for you sci-fi guys and gals. It is inhabited by somewhat primitive people, so they immediately view you as a god and make you their unquestionable ruler. They will adopt your language, your customs, and your belief system.

What would you teach them? What type of government, religion, educational practices, etc.?

Remember, this is your opportunity to build an entire society from the ground up and correct all of the perceived faults of today's world.

Why would yu have to teach them anything? Different customs, religon, and beliefs are what help to destroy this society. I say let them be primitive and happy.

The first thing I would do is name the place Benningtonville. The second thing I would do is found the University of Whatley. The third thing I would do is ban Gvac.

I would make free love the rule to live by and whoever has nice boobs to show them on demand when necessitated. That goes for big cocks as well.

the one thing I know for sure is I would teach them no religion, but science and evolution. I would make them learn to be problem solvers, a whole society of engineer type people. you figure they already must be pretty good at solving problems, they have been living on an island untouched by modern day things for so long.

I think instead of making them all learn english, i would learn to speak whatever they did, unless it was not a complete language.

Adam Ferguson's Essay on the History of Civil Society -- the greatest philosophical work you've never heard of. Puts John Locke to shame.

Plant a fucking garden and get me some booze!!!!!!!
I'm with you on that, but the garden would have to grow before booze would be availble.

I suggest...

1: Grow the garden
2: Ferment the garden
3: Wake up Reeshy and PapaBear
4: Introduce the women to Reeshy and PapaBear
5: Invent the concept of counseling for the women

this reminds me of the end of "The Time Machine" when the traveller (i can't remember his name) goes back to the eloi, but first he grabs three books off of his desk. and the maid and friend are left to wonder, what three books would he have brought to rebuild society.

I actually like the question and want to take it seriously but I find it really hard to answer because it's asking about an idealized society. When I struggle to think of one I can't help think of the cultures I've encountered in my travels and that it's the uniqueness of each that makes them worth experiencing. Certainly none are perfect; all of them have deep flaws including my own. There are things I would like to change about them all. But I wouldn't scrap any of them and when I think of starting from scratch I know I could never come up with something as complex, contradictory and wonderful as the crazy-ass Yemenis have created for their own culture. They drive me nuts but dammit I love em.

It's like coming up with an ideal woman. I once had a girlfriend bring me a beer and give me a blowjob during the Superbowl. I still broke up with her eventually. Kelly LeBrock married Stephen Segal. Robin William's wife in Good Will Hunting farted in her sleep and that was the best thing about her. Cultures are like that - it's the weird little things about them that make them so cool. Thais don't give a shit about gender. A 13 year-old kid comes home from school and tells his father he wants to be a girl. The dad says "Shit! Now we got to buy new clothes!" It's what makes them individual and interesting. Show me the countries with the highest standards of living academically - Iceland or Norway - and I'll show you a place that the idea of going there kinda bores me.

So I actually wish the question were: how do you tinker with a country to give it the best shot at stability, development and democracy after you've defeated it's military and chased its entire system of government and authority off the streets? I could break my post-length record on that one.

But on the ideal society I got nothing but neocon and hayseed jokes. That fact is what this question actually taught me. And so it was a good question.

Best answer I can think of comes from the Wachowski uhhh... Siblings?

Have you ever stood and stared at it, marveled at it's beauty, it's genius? Billions of people just living out their lives, oblivious. Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world. Where none suffered. Where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed that we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I believe that as a species, human beings define their reality through misery and suffering. The perfect world would dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from. Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this, the peak of your civilization. I say your civilization because as soon as we started thinking for you it really became our civilization which is of course what this is all about. Evolution, Morpheus, evolution, like the dinosaur. Look out that window. You had your time. The future is our world, Morpheus. The future is our time.

The entire civilization would be dead a week after one of them figured out they could end it all with a swift crack in the head with a heavy rock.

If anyone saw the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy movie, picture the army of vogons after Marvin hits them with the "Point-of-View" gun.
