Yay.
After putzing along with an AMD 2100+ chip for the past 5 or something years I broke down a week ago and ordered a bunch of new parts. Once the Intel price cuts came I could no longer wait, I haven't been able to run a game on my machine in a couple of years and I needed a big time upgrade.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
PSU: Cosair 520x
Motherboard: Gigabyte DS3 revision 3.3
Video Card: PNY Geforce 8800 GTS
Ram: 2 gigs, 667mhz
So excited. I have most of it assembled and will be installing Windows tonight. So many years of games to catch up on. Anyone here big into PC gaming?

Why buy all that stuff and rebuild your computer? Wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to just buy a new computer?

I am building this computer from scratch, from my current box I am taking out the DVD-RW drive and that's it, and no, it would be double what I paid for it if I bought a machine like this from a vendor.

The graphic card alone he is using is between $350-600 depending on the retailer, buying that already in a machine is ridiculous.
It is always cheaper to build your own comp then buy one.

you can get a dell for 399, and you would be hard pressed to build a comparable computer for that much. actually it would almost be impossible.
but you are right in the sense that it is cheaper to build a better computer for the mid range price of a dell. so an 800-1000 dollar dell would be less powerfull than one you build yourself.

I was not talking about a cheap dell that is $400 that will not do anything high end, my focus was on a high end gaming machine like he is making.
If you tried to buy that from dell or alienware it will be a few thousands, the computer i just configured on alienware was $8,500. It would be alot less if I would just go build it myself, but im lazy.
I just checked, Dells cheap dimension that is $359 with an AMD sempron chip, you could come mighty close to that price by building it yourself, granted putting in the hours would prolly make it not worth it, but definitely could get a cheap motherboard with the amd sempron 3400 chip for like $40-60. The most expensive part would be Vista.

you buying the OS is killer. 100 bucks for Windows.
If you are really serious about building a high end machine, let me know and I will come over and do it with you. I just build one for my cousin a few months ago and he is loving it. I also always build my own. It is fun to do, and like you said on the very high end, you do save a good amount of money

Yea, buying a cheap computer is usually a bad idea if you aim is to get something at a decent price that you want to upgrade later. You get a motherboard that can't accept many add ons or upgrades. You get a very limited number of connections on the board and few USB ports. You'll probably get a VERY compact case that might not even be able to handle an extra CD or DVD drive. You won't be able to add extra case fans. Everything is cramped in the case.
It's kinda like buying a 2 door Geo in hopes you can upgrade it to a Chevy Denali later.

It seems to be the new fad. My friend just got one and cant exactly tell me why. He just says, "its better" but cant explain.
So, nerds... Mac or windows??? (if thats even the right query)

That's one sexy little rig. Have you had any problems with it? Does it get tiring to use after a while?

Def windows on a PC. I work as a programmer, so it is the only option for me. Plus, using windows and knowing the hardware, there is way more out there on the web for help when something goes wrong. just look here, when someone has a problem with firefox, there are much less people responding on how to fix it.

well, new computer is up and running.
i can already feel the speed just by running windows stuff. we'll see how it feels once i get it finalized and start running real applications.
apparently i ordered a 320GB hard drive, i thought i only got a 250. that means once i get this thing fully formatted and plug back in the drive from my old system i will be running with half a TB of storage. that's pretty awesome.
as for the video card, it went on sale, i got it for $240 with a $20 rebate, which reminds me, i need to go send that in tomorrow. i have the 320 meg version.

screw that, i want to run games, not itunes.

The case I got is pretty cool, it's a Coolermaster Centurion 5 and instead of it needing you to screw on all your hard drives and cd type drives everything just clips into place. I did put a screw in the back for the video card, but that's just because the one I got is a total beast and takes up two slots in the back. The whole setup is pretty silent even though I am running 2 case fans, a big PSU fan, a CPU fan, and a graphics card fan.

Awesome set up! The only thing I hate about building computers is I always end up with a hundred little cuts on my knuckles. I was working on some last night, and my pinkie is killing me.

Nice rig.
I still find PC games superior for first person shooters (if not only for the mouse), racing sims (Live for Speed, Richard Burns Rally) and the ultimate in geekdom, the MMOs. :D
