View Full Version : So will the PS3 take off?

A year ago I would have thought I'd have a PS3 near launch but 6 months later I don't see much on the horizon to prompt me to buy it. GTA4 but that's about it (and its not even PS3 exclusive). I'm starting to think Sony might have a flop here and Nintendo has taken back the crown of console king (with Xbox360 a close second).

I think it's one of those things that will pick up slowly. Nintendo came out with a cheap console that has an interesting concept. PS3 is cool from what I've heard, but at 600 bucks it's too much for casual game players. Just wait til the price goes down and theres more games.

Your average Joe Consumer will wind up ultimately spending over a $1000 on whatever game console he winds up buying, be it through accessories, hardware upgrades, memory cards and games. The trick is to stretch that $1000 price tag over the course of time...having to dole out 60% of that right at the starting point scares too many people (including myself) away.
I'd be an asshole to buy that system right now. I can't blow $600 in one swoop. It's a shame too, because they do have some quality games going for it. But even Hideo Kojima (creator of Metal Gear series) has stated he wants to make games for other consoles because he's concerned that PS3 just won't have a good revenue for some time.
So I'm sticking to the Wii, PC...and if things keep going the way they are, Xbox360.
It still has Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Versus, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and Warhawk. There are others I can't remember off the top of my head. It's not going to take off at least until some of these really big games come out and there is a price drop. Frankly, there's not much more than 2 or 3 games worth owning for either the PS3 or even the Wii. The Wii is taking off because of novelty and price. But neither system will survive if good games don't come out. This coming winter will be telling. By next Christmas Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 will be out, and a bunch of big games for PS3 will be out. If Sony is smart they will cut $100 off the price by then too. And then we'll really know where we are.

I saw an article on the net a few weeks ago stating that FFXIII may not be PS3 exclusive. I'd have to find it though. FFXIII could be the thing that would make me buy a PS3. $600 is fucking ridiculous though. I'd buy it for $400.

All I care about right now is GTA 4. I wanted a PS3, but I don't have that kind of money. If the price drops, and it has good games I'll buy it. If not, looks like I'm getting the XBOX 360.

Right now, the only reason I'd get a PS3 is because Liz really wants this "Lair" game. I've got my eyes on a Wii though.

GTA 4 - no longer exclusive
MSG 4 - rumored to be coming to 360
FF XIII - main game PS3 exclusive, side games for PSP, DS
Ratchet and Clank - Sony property, of course exclusive
Warhawk - Delayed launch game. Good luck with it
God of War 3 - the only PS3 exclusive game I'm interested in, and it's years away

Resistance: Fall of Man is also a really good game for the PS3 (top ratings, and I've played it in a demo, it's great). I'm surprised no one mentioned that one yet.

I don't know about PS3 honestly. It has performance flaws, it's the size of a full out cinder block, and it's got a narrowing list of exclusive great games. FFXIII is indeed rumored to be not PS3 exclusive, but given Square's history, I doubt that's true. They might sell it on the PC.
Some argue that inflation is a factor in the pricetag. What you paid for a NES in the 80's is equivalent to what you pay for a ps3 today. I don't know how accurate that is, but there's probably some truth to it.
They should just lose the multimedia bullshit and make it an optional accessory purchase. That would chop off probably $200 right there. Most people already have DVD players by now.
But that makes too much sense, and no way that'd be done anytime soon. PS3 remains on my shit-list for now. Shame too, cuz I loved ps1 and ps2.

A lot if you really want to play a game and it isn't coming out on a system you own.

oh, i get that, but people seem to be bothered that the game they like is also out on another platform. i kinda get it all, but it seems a bit silly.

Well, it comes down to the question of why spring more for a PS3 when I can play the same game on the less expensive 360? To save on development costs, often it seems that developers wind up not taking advantage of the unique technical superior (on paper anyway) features of the PS3. So you get a game that is very similar across multiple platforms and that will hurt the PS3 big time. Blue Ray wont matter until you can rent them down the block (imo). Seems like six-axis is a gimmick which is probably (I dont know) better implemented on the Wii. And lastly Sony's online service apparently blows compared to xbox live. Sure its free, but so is .......

The PS3 will take off in a few months (quarters?) and eventually leave the 360 in the dust when it's library gets bigger. The small library and it's lack of compatibility with avi, mpeg, and the divx codec are pissing me off at the moment. If you want to copy a movie to the PS3 you have to convert it to mp4 on your computer first, wasting a couple of hours and hurting AV fidelity in the process. Hopefully Sony will loosen up and release a patch to make it a real media center.
The Wii is eclipsing PS3 now mostly because of the Wiimote hype. I like what Nintendo is trying to do, but developers of the 1st gen games have serious problems with controller inaccuracy and playability issues. I think Wii players are too forgiving of the controls because they've invested time and money and they enjoy being part of a "movement" like Apple fans do.
The market is big and no one system has to lose for the others to succeed. Rubes like me will continue to buy these systems and let them gather dust while we play our DS's.

PS3 was fucked the second it came out with a $600 price tag. Fuck you Sony.
Not that XBOX 360 is much better priced, it's still way too much money for a console.
One area where the PS3 surprisingly has an advantage: system failures. 360s are failing left and right. Even the Wii had an issue right after being released where system updates were breaking the system. But there haven't been any widespread issues with the PS3 yet. For $600, there better not be.
They really need to lower the price this year.

So I guess the PS3 overheating issues don't count?

The only time I ever heard overheating issues were before the launch when systems were crashing at conventions in enclosures with no airflow. A PS3 actually runs much cooler than a 360. All you have to do is touch each of them to feel that.

I owned a PS1, and I bought a PS2 right after launch, but I really don't think I'll ever be getting a PS3. I just don't see how it's worth it.
I'm going to be getting a Wii at some point with some of my tax return money. Mainly for all the old games I missed out on.
I kind of want to pick up a 360 at some point, but all those technical issues scare me away from doing so.
When it comes to the PS3, it's just too much money, too little pay off.

Do you have to pay a fee for using Wii online service? Which I presume you need to do, if you want to download old games? Which I think you can do with a Wii??

Let me tell you guys from hands on expirience with all three systems. I own all three.
I got the Wii first. Waited outside target the day it launched. I was fun for about 3 weeks. Not many games of depth, just short novelty games. Twilight princess was the exception but after that it just seems like the only thing for the system are crappy ports or games with only mini-games. The only time I play it are when i have more friends over than i do PS3 or 360 controllers.
2 weeks after I got the Wii, I picked up a PS3. Big mistake!!! Not many titles out yet but slowly more are coming out. And everytime I went to gamestop I had to pop out 70 bucks for a game. Resistance is strong,Virtua Fighter is strong but as of yet not many games worth buying the system and then a game for it.
Then about a month ago i got a 360. MAN I FUCKING LOVE IT!!! The online is great and easy to use. Plus everytime i goto gamestop i can buy something new for it. I'll never come to a deadend like I did a couple of times with the ps3. The only problem with the 360 is that microsoft makes you pay out the ass for everything and anything. Them points aren't cheap.
Hands down 360 is the champ and will be for awhile. The graphics of the Wii cannot even be compared with the 360 and the PS3 has alot of catching up to do. If it can.

What about Paper Mario, Trauma Center, Cooking Mama, any of the driving games (Cars, Excitetruck, 4x4, etc.), and others. If you only play Wii Sports, Rayman, and Wario Ware then of course you'll think the whole system is ports.

The games cost money but to use the "online service" is free. To this point the "online service" consists of a weather channel, a news channel, a voting channel and a web browser, although the browser will cost money soon. You can send emails to other Wiis although the process is cumbersome using 16 digit Wii codes unique to each console. You have to get your friends Wii code before be able to send emails.
There are no online games released yet. Unfortunately they will use a system similar to the DS with another 12 digit friend code. You will not be able use your system's Wii code to set up online games. Very very stupid.

I agree - eye of judgment is jaw dropping. I saw a video of that back in October showing a family playing with it like in those old milton bradley commercials. It looked so fun and so advanced I thought it was faked footage. I can't believe it's going to be out this year.

Also, $ony is losing it's exclusive titles. Katamari and Devil May Cry 4 will be on the wii and 360 in the near future.

Yeah, Sega doesn't have a next gen console for a variety of reasons, but the price of games was not the reason. Sega had bad relations with third party companies, they did not have very many awesome exclusive titles as they did in the Genesis years. They fucked up 4 straight consoles after the Genesis- the 32x being the biggest example of a waste of money. (Sega CD, 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast). Their biggest problem was that they had a much smaller library of games. I think the 32x in total tallied maybe 11 titles.
And Sheepy, the Snes and Genesis games that sold for 65 were few and far between... most of them cost 49.99. Big name titles (any game made by Square Soft, Mortal Kombat II when it was newly released, so on) were the type of titles that fetched huge prices. EVERY game for the 360 and ps3 cost $60+ dollars now- whether they're shit or not. The big name games are $70+. Huge difference for people.

I think it will take off now that the PS3 Elite (http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=62788) has been announced.
