People of the 1800's were ugly

I visited Virginia City, NV this weekend. Its an old mining town where Mark Twain got his literary start as a newspaperman. Several stores along the main street(very authentic, not touristy like Deadwood, SD or Tombstone, AZ) advertised "1800 style old-time photographs." There were many pictures from the archives of the town, circa 1860's.

These over dressed miners and prospectors seem like a sorry lot. They are all small, stern and have incredibly bad haircuts. The women in particular seem especially hideous. Is it the black and white photography, lack of makeup and hair products or proof of evolution that people seem more attractive now compared to then?

gotta love those Ruben-esque deathly pale hotties from the late 1890's...Teddy Roosevelt thought they were hot! I love how being as pale as possible was a status symbol(didnt work outside or do any physical labor, that was for the darkies) and now people pay to have carciogenic, melanoma causing UV rays assault their skin. But at least they wear those swim googles...
