My daughter is just getting to the age where she can ride carosels and small amusement rides. How many of you guys remember Nunley's in Baldwin? Man, I miss that place.

Check out this video that I found on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5WagXjQLVY)

I don't remember Nunley's (where's Baldwin?), but I do remember The Enchanted Forest in Ellicott City, MD. It's now abandoned and creepy. See scary photos of it here:

As A Child, Fat Always Loved The Amusement Park At The End Of The Boardwalk In Ocean City, Maryland. When You Got To The Top Of The "Wild Mouse", It Pointed You Right At The Ocean Before Making A Sharp Left And Down. It Was Scary-Fun!

As A Grown-Up, Fat Went With His Nieces And Nephews To An Amusement Park In NJ And Did The Thing That Shoots Straight Up In The Air Called The "Double Shot". Once You Reach A Certain Age, Rides Like That Are NOT Fun!

Up in more northern NJ, there was a small place called "Fairytale Forest" that I went to now and then. It was basically a trainride through a Fairytale like area and a resturaunt.

It sat closed for YEARS, then about 5 years ago someone bought it and fixed it up again. That failed again.

So now they turned the land behind it into self storage.

Fucking lame.

I went to Nunley's. They had a great carosel and this cool car ride thing that was like gocarts on a track outside. My father would take us there all the time. Did you take her to Adventureland? I was a kids ride operator there when I was 17. I would come in hung over or still drunk and poorly seatbelt youngsters. I proudly led the staff in injuries.

Nunley's was awesome! Mini-golf, the indoor carousel, the little roller coaster. I used to go there later to take drunken pics in the photo booth!

The sad thing about my Nunley's experience was the fact that I was never tall/old enough to reach for the brass ring. By the time I was old enough, Nunley's had removed the ring dispenser from the carousel. I would assume that in this day, having a kid reach for a ring that is dangling over hard concrete while hanging off the side of a moving carosel would be a major issue for an insurance company.

However, I did win a free game at the mini golf twice. At the end of 18 holes, you had a chance to sink a put into a machine that would give out free games. What a thrill!

The other thing about that place that was kind of cool was the old fortune teller machine like in the movie big with Tom Hanks.

OK I really feel like my parents now, explaining how great the Coney Island steeplechase was back in the day!

I have not taken her to adventureland. I have since moved out of Long Island, but return about 2x a year to visit family. I have been to adventureland twice. The rides/concessions/games are a million times better, but it lacks the character of a Nunley's.

I think with this post, I will no longer be Rude and Rude-not bad for two years of posting!

That's OK, more for me!

When they closed I tried to buy one of those cars but they were gone by the time I was able to talk to someone. We used to go there a few times every summer. a good saturday when I was a kid would be rides and dinner at Nunley's and then car races at Freeport Speedway.

What a cool post to find after a week away from the board. I grew up 4 blocks from Nunley's. I spent a lot of time there as a kid and as a teenager (high school lunch breaks). My wife and I played mini golf the last weekend it was opened and we kept the balls. They are now Christmas ornaments. I still remember a video game there called sea-devil. You had to shoot at an Orca like sea creature that was attacking you. If you scored a hit it would bleed.

I liked the game where you were looking through the periscope shooting at toy boats going past.

Hey, WP... In a Hampton Inn elevator tonight, I saw a sign saying Hampton Inn restored Enchanted Forest. Have you heard anything about that?

I was in NY last week and saw that Nunley's carousel is now next to the Cradle of Aviation on Long Island. Also, Hampton Inn has made a point of restoring roadside curiosities (http://www.hamptoninn.com/en/hp/promotions/route66/index.jhtml)as part of their marketing strategy.

You weren't man enough for Nunleys.

I'd have whacked you over the head with one of the wooden Skee ball balls.

I actually knew a guy who lived right on the grounds of Nunley's. He was a mechanic for the LIRR. He used to pick up the bums from Penn Station and take them home with him. You figure it out!!
