Ok, after playing it last weekend, I had to buy Guitar Hero 2. I ordered it for the 360 and got it yesterday. I'm having fun with it, but I'm having a problem with something.
For the life of me, I can't trigger the star power. I went thru the tutorials and saw you're supposed to lift the guitar straight up, but nothing happened. Is there anything I was missing? Was I doing it wrong? It wasn't an issue with the power and whatnot, since this was happening in the tutorial as well as the regular game.

You're either born with it, or you're not.

as long as your star power is up past a certain level it should go when you point the guitar straight up.

It has to be at least half way filled before you can trigger it.

Yeah, that's what the tutorial said, and nothing happens

Read the whole post. It doesn't work in the tutorial, where they give you the power. Besides, getting the power isn't a problem. I can to the first round of songs and miss less than 5 notes (down to doing Surrender with 1 missed note)

try jumping up and down?
seriously, it did take me a few times to get it to work.

I seem to remember there were problems with some of the guitars. I'll see if I can find a link.
The problem was with the whammy bar. Sorry...

Ok - first of all, when you load GH2, make sure you're holding the guitar exactly how you would play it normally. It calibrates the point that you have to hold it up to for star power based on where the guitar is during load.
Second - Make sure star power meter is glowing, then hold the neck up Vertically, so the head of the guitar is pointing towards the ceiling. You need to hold it up for a few seconds for it to kick in. If you don't hold it up in that position long enough, it won't work.
In the PS2 version, I always just hit the start button on the guitar to trigger star power, which was much easier. I don't think you can do that in the XBOX360 version (at least, I haven't figured out how to do it yet).
PS - I'm gonna pwn you on the leaderboards ohhh yeahhhhhh

The problem with the guitars was with the whammy bar, and they supposedly fixed it with a patch.
And the yellow key on my guitar is sticky, which is another problem they've had. It's starting to become a real pain in the ass, I might just buy another guitar.

I'll have to try the calibrating thing. That may have caused it. It's possible I was holding it straight up when I turned the game on.
I played the PS2 version last weekend, and people kept hitting the start button by accident. The moved the button so it's recessed on the XBox version and hard to hit easily/by accident.
Yeah, well, you have a head start on the leaderboards so far, but I'm gunning for you. I'm about to overtake NJHardhat, then Treymann is next, but then down goes Missy!

When I first got GH1 for PS2, I would come home from work every day and play it for like 4-5 hours.
You get better with practice.
And the sticky yellow button is fucking me over left and right, I just failed 84% into Freebird on Hard.

Make sure your axe has been set up correctly; intonation and string height. You also wanna check your string gauges, use something a bit heavier on the bottom.
As for the whammy bar; use a Floyd-Rose locking nut system; its real nice and steady.
Should solve your problems.

n00bs.
its simple. it wasnt start on the ps2, it was the select button. it works the same on the 360.
im gimpy so i cant get the proper motion to get it to go by moving the guitar, so i just hit the back button with my pinky.
try to move your hand holding the neck to a downward kind of position, and then up and down to activate it(thats how ive seen everyone do it)
hope that helps.

Umm seriously I never played it, so whats the deal is the controller anything remotely like a real guitar or is it a guitar shaped controller.
And yes, it is not easy to learn to play guitar, but man if some put in the energy that they put into the game, we might get some great players.
Or not.

Just think where you would be if you spent 4-5 hours a day practicing on an ACTUAL GUITAR!!

the only problem is the real guitars have a much steeper learning curve.

It's a guitar shaped controller. I play guitar (classical) and while it helps with the game, the game has nothing at all to do with real guitar. It's a rhythm game, you've got 4 fret buttons you're pushing, that's it.

Here here, we both got it and have had such a great time with it already. It's going to take some time to learn, but I really like it.

I ran thru Easy mode this weekend, did a few other things to get some achievements, like Training, Practice, bombed a song intentionally, got 100% on a song, etc.
I was able to hit Star Power in training and like once during a song. I still have trouble triggerring it, so I don't have that damn 8x achievement yet.

I was fucking ruling this the past 2 days. Beat all of Hard, 5 starred all of Medium up until Misorlu... then just five minutes ago, AS I WAS PLAYING - the fucking dog takes a leap, mouth open, and bites down perfectly on the dangling wire, mangling it and causing it to NOT WORK ANYMORE.
And they are sold out everywhere! I am pissed! Stupid Pronto!

Cut out the mangled portion of cable, stripped it on both ends, separated out the 4 wires inside, stripped the 4 wires, bought crimp connectors, reconnected wires using crimp connectors, crimped and IT WORKS WOOOO HOOOOO!
Toilet: 0 Missy: 1
Pronto: 0 Missy: 1

Missy is the MacGuyver of Guitar Hero.
Am I the only one who doesn't really know or care about most of the songs in the in-game store? I bought Trogdore and Dethklok songs, and unlocked that achievement, but I'm just going to be buying the songs just because they're there.

I'm at the second venue on medium, but I jump back to easy sometimes to just get achievements or to try to get 5 stars on a song. Or to play TROGDOR!
