...as a birthday present for my boyfriend but it's not until the beginning of May and i REALLY REALLY REALLY wanna play it. I got him a slide for his acoustic, too but that isn't any fun.
I don't want to ruin the integrity of it or be the first to play it but man this is tough.

Greatest gift ever, you are awesome

You couldn't be more wrong.
I'd be willing to bet you'd have more fun playing slide than harp.
I agree with Bossanova, though. Excellent gifts.

I thought you bought him one of those big harps but then I did an image search and to my surprise a blues harp is just a harmonica. I couldnt imagine someone playing one of those big suckers.

That is very extravagant..and no he does not know how to officially play one, yet.
I dunno whoever's been in Jack's in Red Bank but i got the stuff from the little guitar shop by the back entrance. The guy sold the stuff to me pretty quickly but he was really nice. I kinda wanted to ask him what other things would be useful to someone who's interested in playing more blues guitar.(maybe an inspirational album).

Nice gift!
Note to everyone on the board, think acoustic, left handed, and July. That's all I'm saying. Or Jazz Flute. I'll be sending out my wish list next week.

It depends on what kind of blues he's interested in playing. For acoustic style, he can go really old school and listen to Robert Johnson, Son House and Charley Patton. For electric, there's Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Willie Dixon to name but a few.
Bobo should chime in here.

It's acoustic. He likes anything with that backroad, barefoot, twang sound.

It depends on what kind of blues he's interested in playing. For acoustic style, he can go really old school and listen to Robert Johnson (very sophisticated music, actually quite difficult), Son House (ruff & intense) and Charley Patton (the King, MY ALL TIME HERO, but recordings are somewhat poor quality & tend to be challenging to people not aquainted w/ albums transcribed from 78 rpm records). For electric, there's Muddy Waters (brilliant & expressive, tho not very technical), B.B. King (overexposed, dig deeper), Willie Dixon (King of Blues songwriters, bass player tho) to name but a few.
Bobo should chime in here.
I'd recommend a collection, get some exposure to those beyond the usual blues "workhorses"!!! Here's a brilliant comp, the cover stinks but the album is great!!!

To get back on the topic of this thread, I had no idea how much of an influence Robert Johnson was on music today. It's fucking insane.
This one man recorded all this music in the 1930's I believe, and it shaped music ever since to an extent.
Just do a web search. Then go listen to some of his music and count the riffs and lyrics you recognize from other songs.

Even more amazing when you consider that he was murdered @ the age of 26 in 1938 & his music was languishing in near total obscurity until Columbia Records released a collection of some of his recordings in 1961!!!

Many great blues artists have been mentioned, but if you want to hear the greatest slide guitarist in the history of the civilized world, get some Ry Cooder. "Paradise and Lunch" is a great starting point, and the 2 disc collection of his soundtrack work will blow you away.
