So, last night, I decided to take a trip to lovely Hagerstown, Maryland to go see the Hagerstown Suns, the Class A affiliate of my beloved Washington Nationals.

Most of the gimmicks are lame (like the game last night featured a guy dressed like a cowboy that danced on the scoreboard and other wacky crowd contests), and the seats are usually cramped and uncomfortable (Municipal Stadium for example is really old and only holds maybe 2000 people....there are two guys that have to go out there and actually put the numbers on the scoreboard Bad News Bears style), and the baseball isn't really all that good because the players aren't very skilled

But there's something about Minor League baseball that I love. There's a purity to it almost, because of its simplicity. You aren't being bombarded with loud annoying music all the time and the stands are actually filled with families and kids instead of faceless corporate guys having 3 martini lunches, because the tickets are affordable (I paid 14 bucks total for two gen admission tix last night).

Its just a simple place to go and watch the game. I will be headed back to Hagerstown many times in the near future.

Here's to Minor League baseball...

I used to work for the Clearwater Phillies. I followed the Florida State League very closely until I moved out of state.

It was an "under the table" type job. I was a regular at the games and my brother was the batboy, so I was always there hours before the gates opened. I got to know everyone and offered to help with anything, so they asked me to run the scoreboard. It was $15/night, but I got to watch games in an air conditioned booth, so I was happy. I did that for 2 seasons.

I'll get to some Binghamton games, it's about an hour twenty from here but it would take me at least 4 hours to get to Brooklyn and if I'm going that far I'll go to Shea.

I actually love that name, although the Vermont Lake Monsters is my favorite. Some of the others just stink by using the big league club's name: Tigers, Yankees.

My local team is pretty low on the minor league totem poll, but they have a pretty damn good history.

I haven't been to a game in years. I really should, seeing as how they play within walking distance to my house. They're only 10-10 right now, though.

it used to be the jamestown expos when i used to go to games years ago. randy johnson once pitched for them, but i was too young when he was there.

Named after Champy, the Loch Ness Monster type creature that haunts lake Champlain. I just love the whole story behind it.

I love going to Long Island Ducks games out here on LI. great atmosphere, cheap, good food. besides, the Ducks have half a team of former major leaguers w/ Carl Everett, Edgardo Alfonzo, Damien Rolls, Jose Offerman, Donovan Osbourne, Danny Graves, John Reidling.

Vermont is DC's NY-Penn affiliate...I may have to make a road trip up there one day to catch a game. I'm still trying to cobble some people together to go see Harrisburg or Columbus
