Who among us hasn't had "issues" with food? To quote Fezzy, "I was a large child" and it wasn't until I lost oodles of weight in my early 20s that I had a real problem. I worked out 3 times a day and skipped meals to stay a size 2. Being of Russian descent, this wasn't the least bit realistic. I am happily "zaftig!" (not that I don't have my days here and there!).

I don't eat until like 12:30 am and don't like eating with other people though i have no problem going to restaurants alone and just consist on coffee the rest of the day. I'm not sure if that counts for anything.

The worst is now-a-days it seems everywhere I turn I know somebody with an eating disorder. Within the past year 3 of my close friends have battled serious eating disorders. One got back on track by herself, another went to seek help from a doctor, and the last one attempted suicide cause she thought she was too fat. She is now in a hospital, and seems to be getting better.
It's just upsetting to me that there is so much pressure in socitey today to look thin.

IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!

You don't get to where I weighed without having a serious problem.

However, now I can see how the "thin" eating disorders start. I catch myself looking in the mirror and realize that I'm not happy where I am, and I still need to lose weight, even though I'm right where I should be, I guess...

I dunno. It's weird.

I have the type of build (short and stocky) that can pack on weight in a hurry. I've battled my waistline for many years, and it fluctuates by almost 20 lbs. depending on how disciplined I'm feeling. Add in my unquenchable thirst for beer, and well, you get the picture!

It's a shame how much of an emphasis is based on physical appearance in our society, but it is an undeniable fact, so you either play along or try and make it on your own merits. The oddest thing is that I seem to meet the most women when I'm at my heaviest. Thank God for "chubby chasers"!

PS - I prefer a "zaftig" woman to an Olive Oyl any day!

I've made the cardinal mistake of thinking I was over my eating disorder. I was part of the "large child" club. lost the weight in college, and kept it off for a few years with no effort. Suddenly, life got really busy, and I was back to stuffing my face to deal with everything.

Eating disorders are so not cool, especially if you're a guy. While it's certainly true that it doesn't seem to affect a guy's social status the way it affects a girl's, it's also seen as really wimpy if you're a guy worried about your weight. My eating disorder has little to do with weight and much to do with using food as a buffer to deal with stress. Sure I want to be thin again, but I'd settle for not feeling like binging ever time life starts to suck.

To my fellow eating disorder battlers, good luck. You're not alone.

I think, therefore I am..............a moron.

You know, I didn't know whether to post this in Ladies Room or Al Duke's Confessional b/c it seems more and more men are affected by eating disorders. The guy from Silver Chair was diagnosed with an eating disorder-- he just stopped eating but it had more to do with his music than it did about his weight.

I can relate to you Silly Puddy-- I've never been the same size or weight for more than a couple of years at a time. I hate gaining weight-- I'm embarrassed to run into people I know and I feel really bad about myself. There are just times in my life it's easier to keep the weight off than others.

I'm convinced Thunderlips and I are going to look like the Farmer and his wife from "Babe" when we get older.

when i started high school, i figured that i could be anyone i wanted since no one there knew me. i basically ate a plain bagel every day that whole year and that was about it. i lost a lot of weight quickly that way. then i got mono, but got it really badly because i couldn't fight it at all due to my crappy eating habits... ended up in the hospital for a little bit. after that, i realized that it just wasn't worth it. my low self esteem and insercurities are there for a million different reasons, and you just trade one problem for another. but i can't say that i don't worry about how i look, and that i don't find myself looking at fat content labels and wishing i was something that i'm not...

Anorexia and Bulimia are both classified as psychopathologies. Both have strong ties to sexual abuse.

Interestingly obesity isn't considered psychopathological.

You gotta be kidding me. Millions of people eat to cope, and a lot of obese people overeat in order to deal with situations, and that's not psychopathological? Like a destroyed psyche by bad parents or bad enviroment in school won't lead to fat people? Ugh.

I'm not sure if that counts for anything.

It doesn't. ;-)

I used to have issues, but then I realized that the stick thin thing wasn't for me. I started working out and girly muscles seem much nicer to me then the stick thin bony look. :-)

I just find it SO ironic that, according to the news, America has never been fatter, yet, we have such problems with eating disorders.

We are such an odd nation-- we're "All or Nothing!"

Alice, I never thought of it that way, that is indeed very ironic. It seems everywhere you turn someone is battling this disease, but yet America has never been heavier, how strange. How can that be?

It seems everywhere you turn someone is battling this disease, but yet America has never been heavier, how strange. How can that be?define battling. some people think low calories/no fat means no exercise. people are eating more because of A) stress, b) abundance of fast food/snack foods, and c) the simple fact that they think that just taking Stacker 2 will cause the pounds to leave. people don't want to put the effort to work out or exercise or osoemthing or other.

Wow, everyone has so much courage to talk about this topic...eating disorders and Nutrition in general is my area of expertise (been studying it for five years in college). I think it is great that you all have such a hold and understanding of it too. Most people find it hard to talk about it, but all of you found an 'out' with everyone that posts...This message board rocks :)
