View Full Version : Well, isn't this everything that the NFL Draft isn't about?

Just when I've nearly lost faith in NFL players actually behaving like human beings, this happens. Joe Thomas, who is sure to be a top 5 pick, is not going to the NFL Draft so that he can go salmon fishing with his dad. This is the same guy who has said in the past that sportscars are a waste of money, and all he really needs is a truck that runs. If this guy doesn't end up playing for the Ford owned Detroit Lions, we can finally remove any doubt that Matt Millen is the worst executive in sports.
OK, I'll stop rambling now. Just thought this was a refreshing little tidbit.

I gotta agree. And what does this say about his father. Say you know what son, this day is about you.

You can go fishing with your pops anytime you want.. The NFL draft happens only once in your life.. Thats if your blessed enough

His draft status really isn't going to change. He isn't going to be #1, and if he can make spend the day with his Dad, rather than sitting in a room full of primadonnas in their fancy new suits that's cool with me. If you can do that and still be talked about as much as any of the 2-10 picks, while creating a nice little PR bump for yourself at the same time, I say go for it. At the end of the day I think that NFL needs more guys like this to be faces of their product, and they'd be silly not to play this up.

who cares if he gets to put on a #1 jersey of what ever team picks him and then talk to a bunch of sportscenter jerks and reporters

Play what up, I care about fishing more than I do about the game? I would see this as a slap in the face if I was a team owner. "Naah, I don't think practice will really make a difference, I'm gonna go play Skeetball with my sister." I understand your point, I just don't like the attitude, if he wants to spend time with his dad, bring him to the draft, this is once in a lifetime!

Im with Bob. If the story included "his dying father" I think it would mean more to me. He can fish any day. I personally think by this story getting out, it feeds more attention to a guy "who doesn't care" about his image. Publicity stunt? Its the first meeting with your new team. Its not like bailing on an award show. This is showing gratitude to the team that made you a important part of their team.

If I'm an owner who invests his money and high draft pick in a guy, I wan't to be pretty damn sure he's not going to be missing time, practices, or in the case of Pacman Jones and entire season because it's so hard to avoid 4am strip club shootings. I'd prefer a guy who spends time with his family. What a bonus that he mauls people on the O Line. There just seems to ba a big up side to this guy, but what the hell do I know?

After watching this guy beat the piss out of my Golden Gophers for his entire career, I can tell you he's worth the draft pick. This whole thing is gonna help him get rich. N Rich. By that, I mean he'll be wearing the hot new N Series Jeans by Nautica. Like a gentleman.
A guy like Joe Thomas who only wants a pickup truck, wouldn't give two shits about the NFL draft party. To a guy like that, fishing on Lake Michigan is much cooler. I don't know Thomas, but his family is only 15 minutes from my place and I know alot of guys just like him from the state.
Plus the cries of "PR stunt" is fucking hilarious. Has there ever been a greater PR stunt than televising the NFL Draft?

I don't think it's a stunt, but I'm an idiot. What surprises me is that "experts" like Kiper treat this like a bad career move. What frightens me more is that society thinks this is so odd compared to spending an afternoon in a room drinking a bottle of water and looking at Jamrcus Russel's giant earring. He'll go out fishing in the morning and when he returns he'll be a rich, rich man. It'll be a good day to be Joe Thomas.
I would be udderly shocked if it was a publicity stunt. Whoever gets this guy is getting a solid citizen and a road-grader left tackle.

I dont have a problem with this guy did. Maybe he doesnt like the media or the spot light. I dont blame him for that. Maybe spending time with his father and doing something he always does with his father more important then taking pictures and sitting around all day in a suit. He can get the call to what team he has been drafted to and take it from there. All the draft is, is a way for the NFL to make more money.
I like what he did, if my dad was alive I would rather spend an afternoon with him then go to the NFL draft.
Dan 'Hampton

What's he missing by not being at the draft. Whatever drafts him already has met him, probably more than once, so that won't be a worry for them. I think it's great he's doing this. The draft is nothing but a dog and pony show with no real substance.
