Today marks the 20th anniversary of The Simpson's first TV appearence, as a short on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987
Good Night - The Simpsons [Tracey Ullman] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuF7mG6OxUM)
While not the longest show on TV [Meet The Press has that title, I think] it is both the
-Longest running american animated program
-Longest running american sitcom
The Simpson's TV Show Factoids from Wikipedia:
Since its debut on December 17, 1989, the show has aired 394 episodes over 18 seasons, and as of March 20, 2006, it was renewed for a 19th season, due to be aired in 2007–2008. The 18th season finale will be the 400th episode, and the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons franchise will be celebrated in 2007. A feature-length movie is currently being produced, to be released on July 27, 2007.

I'm like The Simpsons but I'm actually more a fan of Groening's 'Life/Work/School/ is Hell' series. You gotta check it out if ya haven't. Hysterical. Dark. Wonderful.

Nothing's close in animation...Flintstones? Please. Family Guy? Too early to tell.
Favorite episode: Principal Skinner courting one of Marge's sisters

Its absolutely amazing that I stopped watching regularly over TEN YEARS AGO....and the show's still on....
Probably the best animated show ever (although if South Park goes another 5 years.....), but I still give best sitcom ever to Seinfeld
I do love the show though....there are some nights when Fuzzybutt and I will just throw Simpsons lines back and forth for no reason, and they still make me laugh
My favorite episode would probably either be the one with the Immigrants (I don't pay the bear tax, I pay the Homer tax!) or the one with the 22 short films about Springfield
My favorite character is easily Grampa Simpson...no one even comes close

We also watched the first episode (the Christmas special with Santa's Little Helper) together.

Its also amazing to see how in 20 years its gone from being viewed this really anti-family-most terrible-thing-thats-ever-happened-to-tv-thing, to now where the family and the show is held up as this sort of paragon of family virtue
Remember when it was "shocking" for Bart to call Homer "man" and "Homer"?

I havent really watched in years but for a sub-thread of best Simpson's episode ever, that's easy for me, cant remember the exact name but...
Marge Protests the Itchy + Scratchy Show, so it gets banned, or modified horrifically, and there is a scene where you see all these kids turning off their TVs and grabbing long-ignored skateboards and sports gear and going outside and enjoying the real world.
Amazing, amazing, amazing.
I believe that one also ended with Marge and Homer gazing at Michelangelo's David, debating art and censorship.
Amazing, amazing, amazing.

With Maggie's attack on Homer, a play on the "Psycho" shower scene.
As I often say: the worst Simspons episode is still better than most of the crap on TV today.

I tune occasionally when I can, and it still makes me laugh. There are so many instances in life where a Simpsons quote will come to mind. My friends and I could have long conversations with nothing but Simpsons' quotes.
Just the other night I heard Indagaddavida by Iron Butterfly and who can hear that song anymore and not say "Wait a minute, that sounds like rock and/or roll!"
I was in college in the early 90's during it's heyday and Sunday night was always a fun night with beers, some weed and hysterical laughter. And when it went into syndication?! It's was amazing.
"The areola borealis. In your kitchen."
The episode when Springfield's area code changed and Homer said he would have to write it down on his hand to remember and then looking down and seeing Karl = Black, Lenny = White ... I can't remember laughing so hard.
Prof. Frink and Hans Moleman are my favorite. Mm-Hey! Oh dear...
Not the best sitcom on TV now... but one of the best of all time.
I look forward to the movie.

i wish they would go back to showing the "Treehouse of Horror" episodes on the actual day of Halloween. That use to be the cool thing, go trick or treating and then run home, sort through the candy and tainted candy and watch the Simpsons....could be on a monday, thursday or saturday night.....didnt matter. I think it was 2 years ago, they played one of the episodes on a week after Halloween was over...it was actually November. Drove me completely nuts cause of it.
on the record, im still a fan of the show....my favorite was when they had that one bad season a few years ago....i mean it was totally unwatchable, then the next season, they goofed on themselves the whole season. I found it funny....
another thought, if they played those episodes on Halloween, it would be a neat thing that my daughter and I could watch cause her birthday is on Halloween.....yes...thats a halloween baby in my sig pic.

I had heard that the suits at Fox forced them to do that since November is sweeps month and the Halloween episode is one of the highest rated of the year.
As you might tell from my user name I'm a pretty big Simpsons fan. I grew up with the show and it's probably shaped my sense of humour more than anything. I won't try to pretend that it's anywhere near its peak, but the couple years have been an improvement over the low point.

Fav really minor character: Voice cracking, acne riddled teen who usually works at movie theater or fast food place
I probably stopped watching regularly like 8-9 years ago.
I still have it set in my Tivo, so I check out some of the new episodes, but I don't watch them all.
It was starting to get unwatchably bad for a while a few years back, but they brought back some of the old writers/producers, and it's gotten better the last couple years even though it's nowhere near what it was.
Actually, the people who run the show say the reason it's harder to do these days is because FOX cuts an extra two minutes out of the show, from what it was 10 years ago, so they can't really do B storylines in most episodes like they used to.
As for my favorite episodes:
-The cat burgular one
-Homer goes to College (one of Conan's episodes)
-The Burns casino one

Jesus Christ, this makes me feel old.
It's funny to watch episodes from the first few seasons and see that they're actually trying to follow a plotline and a coherent story all the way through. Back then, I think they were actually trying to be a real family sitcom. Now, plotlines seem to be an excuse to string together a series of jokes and sight gags, which seems odd based on the way that they've blasted Family Guy as being stupid.
I like that the Simpsons are still around, but I'd also like to see it given a dignified death.

Tonight's episode was just death: a Lisa-centered episode, which has always led to some of the worst episodes anyway, coupled with the devolution of this show into a string of lame gags and stunt guest cameos.
Yeap, time for this show to shuffle off to its great reward.

As average (or worse) the show has been for basically all of the 21st Century, you could argue that the first 12 seasons really are by far the best comedy series ever produced on television, especially those "glory years" of 4th-8th seasons. You can throw on any episode from those years and it still kills and it's still smart and it doesn't matter how many times you've seen it; if you're a fan, you'll happily watch it.
And as much as I'm not wowed by the newer episodes, quite a few of the ones I've caught in repeat from the 13th-15th seasons have aged much better compared to when they first premiered. I don't know if I'll get the DVD's from those seasons, but I'll definitely be buying up through season 12.
The two things I've always said that chaged the show for the worse for me was that they all but stopped writing characters for the famous guest stars. For the first 12 years or so, any celebrity that guest starred had a totally original character written for them. Sure, you'd have a few exceptions, but it would still be completely absurd, like U2 showing up and singing in a musical number about garbagemen or Homer basically working as a servant for Alec Baldwin and Kim Bassinger and an always bathrobe-clad Ron Howard, or the Beatles as themselves but completely blowing it off. Now, if a celebrity shows up, they're basically just doing a batant and lazily written cameo as themselves just to draw in viewers.
One later years exception: Stan Lee as himself doing an appearance at the comic store and refusing to leave, annoying the piss out of everyone with his stupid anecdotes and advice and then finally tearing off his own shirt claiming he could turn into the Hulk. THAT ruled.
The other thing that's been noticeably missing is heart. In an attempt to compete with shows like FG or SP, The Simpsons have become as jaded and nihilistic as they've ever been, and all the emotional connect of the show has been stripped away. Sure, it was always incrediby sarcastic and absurd, but think of all those episodes from the first 10 years that really reminded you at the end that this was a family and people who at times struggled with some "real problem" and you actually cared for the characters. Now, they're just talking props for lazy pop culture references. The last time I think an episode had any kind of emotional core was when Maude Flanders died...everything since that is my personal "jumping the shark" moment because it seemed like the writers stopped caring about the characters. Sappy, yeah, but it's a pretty noticeable difference between the glory days and the last several seasons.
Lisa episodes can often stink, but the ones where she becomes a vegetarian, gives the valentine to Ralph and has a rival move to town are greats.

20 years on TV...
and about 6 years too long. I'm so saddened at how far this show has fallen. As many have stated in this thread, this show was a part of my everyday life, sad as that may be. Using quotes in real life, Sundays in College gathering the crew together for some beer, grass and Simpsons, knowing every episode frontwards and backwards. This show was the greatest of all time in my opinion and I never missed it. Now I couldn't tell you the last time I watched it. Probably once this season (missed the THOH this season) and twice last year (THOH and one other). The last time I even cared to watch it was the Ricky Gervais ep., and it was awful. I couldn't believe how bad it was. I heard that the movie was really good, but I had no desire to see it. That shouldn't have even been considered until after the series was done. And they all should've died at the end.

i think the last season has been really solid with really great moments ... the comic book episode with alan moore was brilliant
you get a show with a 20 year there's gonna be plenty of hits and misses
and there's always an idealized, glorified (almost sacred) era -- with SNL you have: the first season; the first few seasons; the eddie murphy years; the phil hartman era and the wil farrel era ... i think it really matters more about you and where you are at certain points in your life
i read a great review of the first season of SNL on DVD that the reruns were either an half hour or hour, and the complilations tend to focus on the same groups of sketches ... but that holy, santimonious first season had some real clunker moments too ...

THAAAANK YOU.
I've been preaching to the deaf about those first years of SNL. They might've been groundbreaking at the time but, they're ANYTHING but "timeless". They don't hold up. Certain people get flustered when ya tell 'em that those first 2 years were for shit. They've totally romanticized the memory of the original NRFPTPlayers.
Now... to bring this thread back to The Simpsons, I gotta say... I don't think the show sucks these days. Not at all. Perhaps we've been overexposed to that show. Perhaps 20 years of incessant reruns has worn out it's welcome but... these new episodes definitely are strong. The show is dependably funny. HILARIOUS? Maybe not. But it sure as shit hasn't jumped the shark. Or the gorge... as it were.
The first two parts didn't impress me, but I wouldn't come out and say they "sucked" - the "Charlie Brown" one, however, was classic. I loved that one.
Can't say anything good about "Family Guy" right now, or even "South Park" - it's sick, but the only one of the big animated sitcoms I'm almost always laughing at is "American Dad"

From Wikipedia
The half-hour series premiered on December 17, 1989 with "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire", a Christmas special.
I'm thinking Christmas episode didn't count, because it says here it was a special.
However
"Bart the Genius" is the second episode of The Simpsons' first season, which originally aired on the Fox network on January 14, 1990.
So, maybe they count that as the first episode, because the show began having regular weekly episodes after that.

I saw that too but still call bullshit. The first show was before Chistmas (Dec. 17). Ordinarily a show would go into re-runs or hiatus during the holidays and they wouldn't have any new shows unti the holidays were over. Ergo; Jan 14. I think FOX fucked up and they should have celebrated this back in December. It was obiviously a "Premiere" episode as it introduced all the main and a lot of the secondary characters.

I recently noticed something that doesn't bode well for the Simpsons. Through the years, local Fox stations have had rotating line ups of repeats of various shows in the 6:30-8:00 time slots. Around here it's mostly been:
Early 90's: Mash-Cheers-Simpsons
Late 90's: Friends-Seinfeld-Simpsons
Briefly in the early 2000's: Raymond-Seinfeld-Simpson
Starting about a year ago: TMZ-Seinfeld-Simpsons
A few weeks ago, they completely dropped the Simpsons, and The Office took over.

Yeah, that's what happened here: The Simpsons still have a couple slots between 5-7 but Seinfeld got chopped down. Granted, it was chopped down from 6(!) airings to 2 on at the same time on different channels, but still.

I missed the first segment of Treehouse of Horror XX tonight.
The second segment was OK -- I chuckled a few times.
I have no idea what that last segment was.

I flipped the channel as soon as Moe started singing.
And wasnt that the 19th tree house of horror because they didnt do a show the first season did they?

was it some kind of Phantom of the Opera reference?
I enjoyed the XIX repeat that was on before more than the new one.

The whole thing was just eh, but I believe it was more referencing Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street than Phantom.

It's still on at 11:30 here, but that piece of shit "Two and a Half Men" is on back to back at 7 PM.
It does seem like the Simpsons are receding in popularity.
Thats so odd. 2 and a Half Men arent even syndicated on the same channel as The Simpsons here. Its actually them and Family Guy on one channel, and The Simpsons and Seinfeld on another.

Yeah, that did kind of raise my eyebrow. But I think Fox lets the Simpsons be the show that tweaks them so they can say that they do allow criticism.
Another point on this season: traditionally, Lisa episodes have been some of the worst of the series, and both episodes so far have been very Lisa-centric. And they aren't any better at doing anything interesting with Lisa than they have been.

Banksy (or was it Mr Brainwash) did an incredibly dark opening couch scene for the simpsons.

It was their new intro with Banksy graffiti throw in cleverly, and then once they get in the house it turns into this crazy ass montage of a dystopean Korean animation studio which also houses Simpsons merchandising plants.
It really was fucking funny, especially if you listen to the commentary DVDs with the creative people behind the show who abhor the business side of the show with the network and everything that goes along with it.

Close. Gunsmoke had 635 episodes in 20 seasons and Lassie had 588 episodes in 19 seasons.

I thought Law and Order was up there too but it "only" had 456 episodes.

It stuns me that there are 588 episodes-worth of Timmy-rescuing horseshit to be had out there.

Scripted shows. The Today Show would also have many more since it is on 5 days a week.

As would It's Academic. The longest running quiz show. It started in 1961 and it's first host just retired last year.

The original.
There is almost enough Treehouse of Horror episodes to comprise an entire TV-season worth of episodes. Barring an incredible falling out with Fox, there will be 24 Halloween episodes.
