Here in Bergen County, it's still raining but the heavy downpour seems to have subsided slightly (for now). We haven't gotten any high winds, but they keep saying we'll see them tonight.

There's a drainage stream right by our house that I've been watching. It went from a normal/slightly high level, to almost over its banks within an hour. Hopefully, it won't crest and turn the basement into a swimming pool.

It's been raining hard off and on since last night. Lots of wind when it's raining. Earlier in the day, I was working in the yard between storms, and the temp went from 58 to 71 back to 60 in less than an hour. It was weird as hell.

The rain here in Bergen County eased up for maybe 20 minutes, and now it's raining hard again. The came and pumped out the storms sewers here because they started to back up.

It won't stop POURING!

If we make it through this storm without a few feet of water in the basement, I'll be shocked.

Gvac
04-15-2007, 07:13 PM
If water gets in your tailpipe, you'll flood it out. If you have to drive through deep water, keep your foot on the gas people. Even if you're just crawling through at 10 mph, make sure you've got air blowing out the exhaust when you're driving through puddles.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen people get stuck because they panic and start to coast.

It's a losing battle here in Bergen County. We have a sump pump in the basement, which is just postponing the inevitable. I don't think anyone expected NJ to get hammered like this. We could lose everything in the basement (washer, dryer, furnace, water heater).

My girlfriend and I spent the last two hours taking everything out of the basement we wanted to save. I'm not sure what is going to happen, but from the looks of the weather reports we're going to get more flooding.

The FD stopped and had us shut off the gas and furnace. If it gets to the breaker box, we have to call and shut off the electric. At that point, the house is uninhabitable. My chick is a mess, and I'm numb from fighting a losing battle since this morning.

JPMNICK

how much deeper? you risk flooding the engine, as well as water coming into your car thorugh the doors. did high tide pass already?

High tide was at 9pm but the water seemed to rise more AFTER high tide. I think the wind may be blowing water into the street from the bay? I'm concerned about moving it because the last time I did, the middle of the street was twice as deep as where my house is and I almost thought I wouldn't make it.

I just spoke with my insurance company and my car is covered for flooding. So I guess either way I should be fine.

if the street is going to be much higher, then do not move it. backing up into the street and then pulling forward to move it somewhere else might be a problem. I am sure it will be fine where it is. you should look into buying blocks to pull the car up onto for the future, esp. if you plan of living there for a while.

No. It's my gf's house, and apparently they don't, or don't like too, include flood insurance for any home not in a flood plain or 100-year flood plain (she's not). She said to get it by itself was very expensive (not certain of what that actual cost was). When she told me that, it didn't exactly help calm my already stressed nerves.

When Hurricane Floyd hit back in '99, Bound Brook was under a lot more flood water than that. . .the entire town ended up being classified as a disaster zone.

The Canal was flooded from the flooded Raritan River. It split RU-New Brunswick in half for almost two full days because both George Street AND Route 18 flooded. . .to give you a sense of how severe it was, they cancelled classes both days and the NJ National Guard had to dispatch water trucks because the water supply on the Piscataway campuses was polluted from the River bacteria (ewww) . . . the water was running brown.

That only happened on the College Avenue Campus the first day and took them an extra couple of days to clear up on the other 2 campuses.

Today, Acting-Governor Codey declared a second day of "State of Emergency."

There's a ton of flooding in the area I need to go home to.

There's one train line down (Montclair-Boonton). Route 23 is flooded, Route 18 is flooded (and closed and backed up all the way to the NJ Turnpike), Route 46 is flooded, there are power outages in Westchester NY (and CT and on LI), the Ramapo River is supposed to crest today up near Mahwah, two subway lines are experiencing delays and yet. . .

. . .the bastards who make the call to close the office decided that flooding, accidents and a state of emergency advising people to stay off the roads unless it was "absolutely necessary" weren't reason enough to close for the day.

As a result, I am an hour away from home, in an area that's prone to flooding (Newark - the Passaic River is maybe 2 or 3 blocks away and the commute to the Turnpike is paved-over recovered swampland) and the office is not closed.

I wanted to strangle everyone this morning.

as soon as the water is low enough, you need to drive it for a while and get it hot enough that any internal water sitting on wires or anything evaporates. even if you just start it and let it run and pump the gas for a while.

and this is from experience, make sure you have fire insurance on your car. if not get it. my friends car was in a flood (higher than yours so do not panic to much) and his wiring got wet. 5 months later driving down rt. 78 it caught on fire. the cause was from the flood. it was all covered under insurance.

I took it to a local shop to see if they could get the water out. The guy told me he sees this all the time, and because it's salt water, the insurance company is most likely going to total out my car. He said the car could run fine for a few months, but the salt corrodes out everything and the car will be really problematic down the line.

I just bought the car a month and a half ago.

The river behind my house is almost completely over it's banks now. Luckily our house is up on a hill away from the river so we won't have any problems, but it means people down the street from us on the same level as the river are flooded or are about to be flooded.

Last time I even saw the river close to flooding was over 10 years ago. Last full on flood I remember was in the mid 80's. This was a pretty bad storm.

I took it to a local shop to see if they could get the water out. The guy told me he sees this all the time, and because it's salt water, the insurance company is most likely going to total out my car. He said the car could run fine for a few months, but the salt corrodes out everything and the car will be really problematic down the line.

I just bought the car a month and a half ago.

that sucks so bad, sorry to hear it

that sucks b/c it so new and your insurance company will only give you what the car is worth. You should look to see how much its worth on kbb.com or edmunds etc and see the differnce of what you paid compared to what you will get. Good luck.

Luckily I have gap insurance that covers the difference between what the insurance pays me and what I owe on my loan.

Does that insurance also cover bad overproduced B-Movies?

The wind has been raging all day.

My condolences on your car, missy.
That's a very shitty situation.

Insurance adjuster just came out. Said it's better for the insurance company to total out the car than fix the inevitable problems it will have down the line.

I'm looking into getting a car thats higher off the ground this time.

i have a volvo suv that's very car like in the ride. higher off the ground, but not as high as my old durango was. i dunno why but i think the hyndai santa fe suv's are really cute. probably not too bad on gas mileage either.

missy after they total it, you can buy it back from them for like 500 bucks, maybe 1000. then you can sell it for prolly like 6k with a flood title. esp with the pics you have, someone will realize it is prolly a good deal.

yea my friend bought an acura TL or TSX for like 5500 with a flood on the title. he is now at 185k miles (he drives liek 2000 a week or something crazy) and has had no problems.

you could even get a free car this way, let them total it and then buy it back and how ever long it makes it you can use it for.

I wish I had known this. There were a lot of parts in my old explorer I could have salvaged for my new truck.

I was working on Sunday and just as a break from the rain started, so did a thick black smoke that covered the sky. HUGE fire in Hoboken.
Here are some of the pictures. (http://hoboken411.com/archives/6530#more-6530) Notice the streets too.... almost the entire town was flooded.

Thats a good idea. Looking at your pictures it looks like you live in a beach/shore area (the house and your street looked like house I see down the jersey shore) I could be wrong but if you do live in a beach area and it floods often you should buy a truck. Jeep does have a lot of new trucks. The compass and the patriot look nice for the price and I like the body better then the liberty. The dodge Nitro also looks like a pretty cool truck.

If your looking to spend a lot of money then Land Rover has some nice trucks LR3 LR2 and the range rover.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear about the car total, but you can indeed buy it back from the insurance company.

They merely take it to auctions where auto body shops buy them for parts or fix them up and resell them.

angrymissy
11-14-2009, 02:37 PM
They wouldn't tell me where the auction was last time... that was a brand new car too. This one is about 4 years old. Chevy HHR. The CRV I bought after the last flood fiasco survived this flood.
