i plan on goin out on my friends boat this summer for some fluke fishing, and since his spare rods are pretty decrepit... i want to get my own rod and reel. problem is i don't really know about equipment. i'm not lookin for top of the line anything, just something that functions and doesn't cost an arm and a leg

could i get away with this:
http://www.modells.com/product/index...ductId=1954408

is 14 lbs test line strong enough? what about the color of the line, does that have any kind of effect?

thanks guys

okay u link ended at the home page but 14lbs....

i dont think it matters
color either
ive used blue and white and havent seen a difference

you need to get a fresh water fishing spinning combo reel (http://www.modells.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=562569&cp=716957.717038)

good for boating and can be used for casting-its not that hard
good prices here
aim for the 50 dollar ones,
i cant tell a difference between the 50-70 price range
pick up one of these also (http://www.modells.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2571933)

Why would he want a freshwater combo when he's going saltwater fishing?

Hey Gimp, how come you guys are going for fluke and not blues or stripers?

A really decent rod for not a lot of money is Shakespear's Ugly Stick line. Hard core fishers will look at you with some pity, but I really liked my first one. A good combo will run about $60. If you have a little more to toss in I would try and snag one of Shimano's Carbomax rods ($40-50) then maybe a decent Daiwa spinning reel ($30). You probably want something that will be usable for a varitey of sitiuations, so I guess I would go with a medium action rod 8-12 lbs. Defenitely go after some stripers while your out there, always worth a shot.

Second the Shimano and Daiwa. Worth the money. I'm still using a Daiwa reel I got 20 years ago.

sorry about the link cutting off, i was looking at this one: http://www.modells.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1954408

but after reading this thread i gather i should be in the $60-$100 range for a rod

i dunno why we havn't gone for blues or stripers. i usta fish for them on my uncle boat and party boats. i think maybe you hafta go too far out for a good spot? enlighten me please.

yeah something good for a variety of situations def sounds like the way to go. how heavy line should i go for? like 15-20 lbs test? would that be sufficient for blues and stripers as well? i remember them getting pretty big. thanks for the input.

It's hard to get an idea of what that combo is like, I didn't even see a length or action listed for it, I would defenitely go for one of those Ugly Stick combos, the 7-foot or the 6-6.

* 55 size reel
* 7-ft, medium-action rod

theres a 6 foot version, but they are only offering the 7 foot one on the drop down menu

i'm deffinetly looking into the ugly stick combos

14 to 20 lbs line is plenty. The line ratings are a littlle misleading and a 15 pound blue or striper is a lot bigger thean you think. As far as the rod, will you be just using this for casting on a boat or do you see yourself fishing off of the shore at times? Also, how big is your friends boat?

7-foot is a little much, not too versatile, maybe hard to cast, but that's a personal preference thing, won't do well for freshwater but maybe you're not worried about that.

That's what I was thinking, especially casting on a boat, but if he also was maybe going to do some shore casting it may be ok. You could always do a sort of soft cast off the boat. But like Jetdog said, alot of the is just personal preferance. Go to a store and get a feel. I'm weird, I'm righthanded and reel with my right hand.

my friends boat is about 12 feet long i beleive. its not huge, but its nice enough and def gets us around very well.

probly mostly casting off of a boat, but i would like it to be able to perform when fishing off a pier or something aswell.

very helpful, you lot

Then I would go with something like this (http://www.modells.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1422790&cp=562589&parentPage=family) but I would suggest going to a local tackle shop and talking to the people there. It may cost you a few bucks more but it will be well worth it. There is nothing worse than getting out on the water and finding out that you bought all the wrong shit.

second that, without checking things out in person, I would say this is probably you're best bet.

I'm with you, i trout fish in streams all the time with a lot of guys that have been doing it since they were little and we fuck shit up a lot and typically go for the cheaper rod and reel combos. Especially when it comes to the reel. As long as its a nice open faced reel that's all i typically care about.

I forgot to factor in your height. In other words, go to a tackle shop.
