It's an ongoing series of graphic novels written by Robert Kirkman. It's about a group of people in the South trying to survive in the midst of a zombie apocalypse (the premise by itself had me sold). Heavily influenced by all the major zombie movies (Romero's flicks, 28 days later, etc), but the characters are much more likable and detailed. I think the art's very good and the story's really quite good, much better than I thought Image could achieve. What do people think of it?

Nobody knows why the zombies showed up, and the creator has basically said that we'll never find out. The series is unique because it focuses solely on the survivors and their day to day lives in this new world as opposed to some kind of action movie-type "I'm just a regular dude but I'm gonna find out what happened and fix it" sort of gimme.

Any local comic shop will likely have one or two trade paperback editions at their place, along with the actual monthly comic itself. Trade paperbacks consist of about 6 issues per volume. There's currently 5 trade paperback editions, and a 6th is coming out in a month or so.

Barnes and Noble occasionally has a copy of the trade paperbacks, as does Borders. Or you could always search for them on amazon. Just key in 'The Walking Dead' and you'll find all the T.Paperback editions on sale. Here's a link where you can preview six pages of the 1st volume. Just click on the right edge of the image to "flip" the pages.

Marvel Zombies was entertaining
Resident Evil are entertaining games, the movies less so
The past week's South Park was a great zombie satire
And then there was the time I was hanging at the Winchester with my best mate and my girl...

For those of you who are lazy, cheap, impatient, or otherwise too curious to let this pass, there is a REALLY good synopsis of the series on wikipedia. Here is the link. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead) Careful - Spoilers galore.

It sounds like a really interesting series so far, and I think I will break my comics fast and pick up a couple of the collections.

However, it bugs me a little that they haven't tried harder to determine WHY the zombies exist. That would be one of the FIRST things I would want to know in their situation - of course I am an incredibly curious individual.

Yeah, that link is gonna spoil alot of the story for you if you haven't read it- it basically has a big roster of all the characters in the series, and basically tells you who's been killed and who's still alive so far- it's kind of like if you checked out a list to see which characters in the Sopranos gets whacked. But it is a great synopsis...and is constantly updated when the next issue comes out. Me personally? I found myself re-reading the whole damn thing last week. When I first saw the series at B&N, I rushed through the pages just to see who died and who didn't. Didn't ruin the story at all for me.

Hah... I think we're all curious. That's part of what makes the story so fun- knowing so little, being in the dark about the zombies...discovering new things about them as time goes by. All the survivors know is that it's a zombie plague...and that the government and media have likely been destroyed, and all the major cities where they told the people to go to for protection have been overrun. There's a nice scene where you see an overrun tank rife with zombies in wife-beaters and riot gear. The detail is part of what makes it so enjoyable to re-read.

The whole sense of survival and how they all cope with this new world is quite fascinating. One of my biggest gripes with zombie movies is that the living characters tend to be idiotic douchebags who deserve a good devouring. Not so with this storyline... most of them aren't idiots, and you find yourself caring about the characters as time goes on. Their development is damn good, and nothing has been over-the-top ridiculous so far.

I keep thinking about what I'd do in this situation...anyone with enough wits about him can kill a slow-ass zombie or two with a household object (one character gets by with just a hammer). I think how I would try to clear out a whole town if I had the right weapon. I'm thinking a sword would really go a long way. No other graphic novel has me thinking this way, where I could imagine myself in that situation.

If you're just random Joe Shmoe, how would you even go about doing that? No TV, no radio, no phones, little electricity, apparently little to no internet connection...the zombie "issue" seems to be at least continent-wide, if not more...in those kind of conditions, just surviving is going to be 99% of your concern. Running off trying to find the cause or a cure is ultimately superfluous.

OK I have most zombie movies and read The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z and I Am Legend so more recommendations please for novels, graphic novels, movies, or actually real-life experiences with zombies.

I've heard of Reign of the Dead, by Len Barnhart, Rising by Brian Keene, and so on. Never read them, don't know if they're any good- Reign of the Dead has influenced Walking Dead, so it's probably good. I think they're just novels... I don't know of any other graphic novel about zombies, but I'm sure they're out there.

As for great zombie games, I'd recommend (if your PC is able to handle games from 2004) to play Half-Life 2. It's more of a George Orwell 1984-type scenario where you battle a trans-human/alien occupation force called the Combine, but you come across head-crab zombies throughout the game...disobedient citizens who were punished by the new government. The sixth level (or chapter?) has plenty of great references to zombie movies, while you battle legions of them in an abandoned mining town.

Here's a couple images of the zombies...not your traditional zombies per say, but still plenty of gore, moaning, groaning, headshots, and decomposition.

I'm not saying they should wander the world looking for answers like David Carradine, but knowing everything they possibly can about their enemy should be a priority. To be fair, they may be doing this already - my only exposure is through this thread and the synopsis on Wikipedia.

They do mention a Doctror that has his barn filled with zombies that hopes to find a cure. I would think that is the way to go, as well as sending out recon parties to do "studies" of the zombies.

I have been thinking A LOT about this storyline/scenario since I started reading this thread. I am going to HAVE to start reading the books now. Damnit!

This is my favorite ongoing series right now.

The only thing that sucks is the constant delays, I don't buy issues only trades so I've been waiting for volume 6 for a long fucking time.

Anyone interested in this should pick up the trades, they change artists between trade 1 and 2 so you migh be thrown at first but the other trades are just as good as the first (even though I really liked the art in the first 6-7 issues)
Also it's all black and white, didnt see that mentioned anywhere here

comic: Marvel Zombies. Totally different, kind of silly

movie: Dead Alive (aka Brain Dead). A cult classic directed by Peter Jackson.

It's been nearly 2 months since the last issue came out. I know his artist Charlie Adlard does all his work in the U.K. then ships it overseas, so there's certainly a delay there. I also know he's busy with more than one comic publication, and generally he's having to draft up a brand new framework for the Walking Dead storyline. On top of that, the 6th TP volume was released and probably the 3rd hardcover is coming out soon. So he's got a very busy schedule. But 2 months still drives me nuts!

I for one am still gladly waiting for the next issue, and don't think for one second the man is slacking off. I'm just greedy for more :D

You know... the last issue came out April 25th... Fezzie kinda went under a couple weeks later. Coincidence?

It's rarely fair to judge a writer by their run on the X-Messes. They're in the process of beating up both Mike Carey and Ed Brubaker, two of the best writers in the biz. Those characters and titles are often just hopeless and impervious to quality.

Definitely give Invincible a shot. It's by far my favorite superhero title running right now.

Finding rare B&W editions of 3D comics in the comp box. Learning the exciting world of the postal meter, and reveling in knowlege of UPS shipping zones. I got my friend a job there and we were stacking boxes of books in the warehouse. He had some loose pants on and stacked an 80 pound box right on his dick. That was something to see. Plus a hefty $4.25/hour. Is eclipse considered douchy in the comic world?

Anyway, I checked out the Walking Dead books at Border's. I read 'em in the aisle for a while, but 10 bucks a piece? I could read one of them in about 1/2 hour. I understand the collecting thing as I used to do it, but damn, too pricey for me.

Vol. 9 came out a few weeks ago and I picked it up at one of the local stores last night. When I remembered that it had come out I almost pushed my chick to the floor getting to it I was so excited.

I really liked this volume. I was interested to see what was going to happen with Rick and Carl after the chain of events at the prison. A little bit of a slower pace than previous volumes but the writing was great. I loved the scene was telling his dad that he wasn't a kid and wasn't scared anymore.

This has got to be my favorite series going right now. I think I may have to start picking up the monthlies because I probably won't be able to hold out for the next volume.

Of course it moved the story along nicely. But one of the last few panels primarily Lori dying with Judith in her arms was brutal.

I had to stop reading WD for a few months after trade 8. Actually am waiting a little while longer so I can have lots to read up on. It's brutal reading this thing in monthly iterations- too little to read in a month! I'd rather get 3 or 4 trades in one go so I have something to read for a couple days (I deliberately drag out my reading to better enjoy the storyline's atmosphere- maybe it's just me).

And that's awesome that they're making a show out of this. Though I suspect censorship would potentially ruin this particular show, and I'm rarely someone who thinks that gore breasts and language make a difference in a show's quality, but it's so ingrained into Kirkman's world that characters would say 'fuck' instead of 'fudge', that it'd kind of ruin the whole believability to have a zombie apocalypse AND a non-swearing universe.

Yeah, I had to step back from the series after reading the 8th book. It was just so intense and gut-wrenching. I finally read books 9 and 10 this week and while they weren't nearly as tough to take I definitely felt "exhausted" after reading them. It's like you're always on edge reading them.

i thought book 10 was great. the conversion about what living in a world like that does to them as humans and what they have to do was great. also, i really have like seeing what kind of impact it is having on the development of the young characters in the story.

glad i could help you make that decision.

this is by far my favorite ongoing series right now. i wish kirkman could put out a trade of every month. after book 8 i tried to pick up the monthlies but it was too frustrating only being able to read 22 pages at a time. had to go back to picking up the trades.

That and the clutter of having individual issues is untenable after awhile.

Alright. Blasting off for the store now. I'm so impressionable!

I'm fully expecting that the reason for going to DC is going to amount to jack shit. Kirkman has been very clear that this book is not about the usual "we need to know what caused this" mentality you see in almost every zombie movie/story. If they actually end up finding the cause then this is basically just becoming a variation of Y: The Last Man. That wouldn't necessarily make it bad, but one of the things that's made this series so special is that it's just about day to day survival and how that changes people, not bigger stories about finding a "cure."

So I picked up the Walking Dead Compendium (softcover with the first 48 issues), and I'm really enjoying it. I'm not a huge zombie guy, but this is an interesting series. They don't separate by issues, but I'm in the middle of the prison storyline and the bit was the girls was shocking as fuck.

My kid likes zombies movies, but I haven't able to get him into comic books yet. So Santa Claus bought him volume one of The Walking Dead this year. Of course, Santa also read it before Christmas. I didn't know too much about the book, having separated myself somewhat from the comic world since the local shop went out of business a few years ago.

Anyway, my kid loved it and I've been thinking about the series off an on since then. For the past two weeks I've been out of town with work and the hotel is adjacent to a mall. Long story short, I picked up volume three to take back home. Now a few nights later, I've gone back to the mall every night and just finished reading volume ten.

Holy shit am I hooked on this series! It's probably the best ongoing I have read since... Sandman, maybe. My kid's going to shit when I get home with 9 more books (ordered 2 and 4 off ebay - looking forward to them when I get back). I'll probably read the whole thing again in sequence before I give them up.

Volume eight was insane. Shook the series up in a way I didn't expect. My favorite oddball character has been goofy old Axel with his "you follow me?" at the end of each statement. In fact, I'm shocked by the depth of character in these stories and the scenarios they are blending together.

Dale's getting my vote for new most annoying character. Every moment of the past few volumes has been, "Hey, I have an idea, let's run away from the group!" or "Hey, I have an idea, we can live here and pretend the zombies don't exist!"

I can't wait for the next volume...

I can handle veering off the storyline, but the thing I respected and liked about the books is the non happy ending aspect of it... I mean on a TV Show, would they have the balls to kill almost EVERYONE off

We've seen the first two episodes of AMC's Walking Dead series, and here's a spoiler-free description of our gut reaction. (http://io9.com/5667199/spoiler+free-review-of-the-first-two-episodes-of-the-walking-dead)

First and foremost, let's talk about the blood.

You cannot make a television show about zombies without images of blood, rotting flesh and newly ripped-apart flesh. The show is centered around Rick Grimes, a police officer that wakes up from a coma to find his whole world has gone to zombie hell. So how can someone make Walking Dead without the very real, very oppressive feeling of dead meat that lingers on each page of the comic-book source material like flies? It's what makes the undead seem so very real, and the decaying world seem so lost. Let me put your minds at ease, and tell you that this show does not blush at the sight of gore.
