Alright, I have to admit that I am very perplexed on an issue that I have regarding AVI files. I am wondering what is the best way to convert files from AVI to a format that they can be read on a DVD. And before anyone says "change the properties" I have tried that already to no avail. Is there a specific program I need that converts files from AVI to BUP or other DVD compatible?? Or is there something that I havent done yet to make it work??

I have several programs that can burn information onto discs, that is the easy part and I dont need help with that. Some of them include 'Alcohol', 'DVD Fab Gold and Platinum', and 'Nero'. If anyone is familiar with any of these programs or with the dilema I am having of converting .AVI's to DVD readable format I would greatly appreciate the help.

you have to convert the avi files into dvd-compatible MPEG2 video. Then you have to use a DVD authoring program to create a DVD with the proper data structure for a player. I don't know of any free encoders, but I've generally used tmpgenc to make my mpeg2 video and either dvd author (if i don't care about menus) or dvd-lab pro (when i want to show off) to author discs. Vista includes a program called DVD Maker, and some of the cd/dvd burning suites might have programs that do it as well.

Probably the easiest way. Get yourself Nero Vision Express. When you have a single *.AVI file its easy, just run it through Nero Vision Express and name the file output VIDEO_TS.VOB. After its converted, open NERO and select DVD -> DVD MOVIE -> NEW and drag the file you created into the folder marked VIDEO_TS. Click BURN.

If you have multiple parts, I haven't done this, but I think you have to join part 1 and part 2. Unless there is a VIDEO_TS_1.VOB and VIDEO_TS_2.VOB naming scheme... but i think you have to merge/join the multiple parts first.

my thoughts exactly. there are plenty of programs to use but nero is probably the easiest and it shouldn't be hard to find either.

that's dvd -> avi. he wants avi -> dvd.

the reason why free is so hard to come by in this area is due to licensing fees. from the mpeg-2 wiki, "Approximately 640 patents world wide make up the "essential" intellectual property surrounding MPEG-2". the situation hasn't changed in the nearly 10 years i've been dealing with video.

I've had great success using a program called DVD Flick (http://www.dvdflick.net). It's free and easy to use.

there's always the "crap in/crap out" scenario, but if you have decent input sources (i routinely download hi-def avi clips of tv shows), you can produce great looking dvds. older televisions naturally blur things anyway, so a lot of times, video seems to look better on them
