A little early I know but only one week until the first puck drops on the 2007 NHL season! I can't wait even though my Avs are no guarantee to make the playoffs this year with a suspect D core at best. However, I'm calling it now that Wojtek Wolski will win the rookie of the year. A homer pick no doubt, but I caught a few games of his this preseason and in the playoffs last year and he's ready to break out big. The only thing that may hold him back is what line he plays on. The Avs don't have the overall talent on O like they have in the past and I'm not so sure they're very strong up the middle at center. Sure they have Sakic, but after that they are quite thin. And Joe's great but surely not getting any younger. But with Malkin already out for the first month or so, if Wolski stays healthy he should have a great shot at this. As for the season, the Avs hopes never rested on a goalie more than this year. T has to stand on his head like he did in the past in Montreal for the Avs to be a serious threat.

Let the season begin!!

Soon, the best two sports (NHL & NFL) in the world will be up and running. Bring it!

I hope My Rangers got the Memo saying that the season does not end on April 1st. Like they thought it did last year.

At least they made the playoffs last year. Now they just have to pick up a little grit in the form of some North American players bc they have/had way too many Czechs.

I'm feeling good about the Bruins, got a bunch of young guys ready to break and signed a couple of big name free agents. The big test is our young goalies, we got rid of Raycroft and now have a couple of guys who played really well last season.

I'm excited for year two of the Alexander Ovechkin Era

Still a relatively young Caps team, I like the addition of Pothier from Ottawa, they're still under the Cap minimum, so there' some talk they might sign Jason Allison...

I love the reacquisition of Richard Zednik, and adding Alexander Semin after his year in Russia will be great too...PP is going to be awesome...

I'm a little worried because a lot of people have been picking the Sabres to take it all, which is always the kiss of death in every sport.

They have looked good so far. I especially enjoyed their extended 11-round shootout with Pittsburgh the other night.

Here's a cool thing the Avs are doing on their site. They're allowing the fans to vote on four songs to pick which will be played after goals at home games. Pretty cool shit since they even sent out emails to everyone who's on their email list. The first two are a fucking joke (generic shit most rinks play) and I'm glad the fans aren't voting for them.

Damn this sucks as Kono was a great guy who played his heart out (no pun intended) on every second of every shift. The Avs and Cap fans both loved this guy, even though he wasn't in Colorado that long at all. He just one of those guys who gives everything to his team and gets better results than he talent would dictate. I wish him the best and hope the Avs/Caps give him a nice sendoff.

My girlfriend was just saying how pissed we were after he was slashed by the Flames dirtbag which in turn ended his last season reallly early last year. He was having a great year but come to think of it, the injury just may have saved his life. Funny how things sometimes work out for the best. I can't gaurantee this, but it would have been a terrible possibility.

No excuses Kev, they were pussified in the playoffs. They finished just like the Czechs in the Olympics as well. And a ton of teams had guys in the games, my Avs had more and that had nothing to do with their inability to get deep in the playoffs. Ranger fans should be happy to be there since it was almost a decade, but no, they should have won it all right?? If they ever played up to their talent level, the Czechs would be dominant. So where was this NYR grit you speak of as well.

As for the Sens, they have had great players for years but never win the big playoff series. They always fold, always. Now that they lost Chara and other great talented players, they should be worse this year.

Kevin

Yea agreed. I do think they did a great job this offseason picking up some gritty guys like Aaron Ward Matt Cullen

Chara was a huge loss, but the sens have super depth in defense. they also have a pretty solid 1-2 goalie system (who's yet unproven...). as for offense, that shouldn't be a problem. look out for mike fisher to rack up points big time this season as the #2 center.

I'm excited about my NEW YORK ISLANDERS!!. I think they are going to be better then people expected, sorta like the Mets. Nolan was a great choice, great motivator. I can't wait to see what kind of motivation Nolan banging the wife of your goalie-for-the-next-fifteen-years will provide for DiPietro. No one will ever be able to motivate that pussy Yashin. You have a back-up goalie running the team. Nope, never happened that I know of. And Turg won't make it bc he's slowed down bigtime. He'll get 15 this year if he's lucky. Sakic should get to 600 if he stays healthy. Watch this Svatos (2nd year), Wolski (rookie), Stastny (rookie) line. These kids are really flying and should rack up some serious points this year. Also, the Wild have an awesome line (perhaps not on D though) with Gaborik, Demitra and Radivojevic. It's a lightning quick line with a nice age mix 24, 31 and 25 respectively. They should score a ton this year if the D issues don't add up with Lemaire being a D specialist in terms of coaching styles.

I guess I missed this over the summer but Brendan Witt is now playing for the Isles? I thought he made a big deal all through last year about the Caps trading him to a playoff contender and then he got traded to Nashville or whatever....so how did he end up playing for the Isles? I don't think they're going to be making the playoffs, unless whatever Sanitarium Wang ends up in has a hockey league.

It's just a shame. He would've been a great fit for the Sabres, especially since they lost Mike Grier. But alas, the Sabres are right up against the cap. Damn you Danny Briere's $5 million/year arbitration award!!
I've been watching this Kopitar kid in LA play and he's fucking amazing. I'll have to add him to the Calder Trophy race with Wolski and Malkin (if he doesn't miss too much time) for the favorites. The kid just turned 19 and flew under the radar, hell he still is, bc he played in the Swedish Elite League last year. I remembered seeing him play in the World Championships in Latvia where he played possessed for Slovenia. Right now he has 6 points in 3 games and one of his goals came against the Ducks where he put a world-class move on Pronger! It was fucking sweet. Check him out if you have the satellite package at home or when they play out here.

I hate Philly, but I felt AWFUL for Esche, and I lost a TON of respect for Ken Hitchcock

You
DON'T leave a goaltender in for the whole game when he's given up 7 or

hockey that you just don't do that kind of thing, and its why Patrick
Roy never spent the last 10 years of his career in Montreal

I've heard a rumor about what the deal is on the uniform front. Apparently the reason the Sabres didn't have much cohice in the matter is that the NHL wants to shift so that all the uniforms are made by Reebok (which is who designed the new Sabres uniforms). Reebok is planning to redesign the uniforms for ALL the teams, including the original six teams. Obviously, I have no idea if this is true, but if it is, then it's obviously pretty disturbing.

In other news....wow. I couldn't have imagined things going this well so far. The fact that this season has already exceeded expectations is really exciting. I just hope they can get it done against Atlanta Saturday night.

just quoting this because it makes me happy.

The isles made a mistake with Hill and Witt. I would stick with Witt but I think Hill is too old for the high speed NHL, he ends up taking bad penalties because he can't keep up.

I could see the isles making a playoff run this year but I'm not expecting much more. I don't think they will be a laughing stock this year at least.

So far the Isles have been a bit of a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a Knicks-like season this year. I think Nolan should be given some credit. Why was this man blacklisted? Does he have a problem with front office types? I can't imagine a coach like this being out of the game for so long.

Great game tonight by the two rooks on the Avs. Stastny had a goal and two assists, while Wolski responded bigtime to the benching in the prior game. He was benched for not playing two ways which he really wasn't doing and it was showing in his results. So today he showed a ton of character and played his ass off, made some huge hits (which I never saw him do yet) and ended up with a goal and three assists for four points on the night. He was in on every goal for the Avs tonight in a 4-1 win to get them back over .500. Jose also had arguably his best game in a while but still let in what I considered a very weak five-hole goal. Now the two Avs rooks are going to be in third and fourth place in rookie scoring with 15 and 17 pts total. Kopitar continues to look really good in LA, and Malkin is fucking unreal in Pitt scoring a goal almost every night. He has fucking 12 goals in only 18 games with a total of 22 pts on the season already. This kid is for real.

Marc Staal is still a bit young (19), and is currently playing in the OHL and Captain of the Sudbury team, he is going to be a good defenseman for the Blue Shirts in a year or 2, just not this year at minimum a top 4 defenseman

http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?id=2993

And why the fuck do the Avs insist on starting Theodore after Budaj showed them he's the man. He has a much better GAA, shot percentage and win/loss record. Watching every fucking game as I do, I also know that Budaj got tagged with two bullshit losses when Theodore got pulled in 5-1 and 4-0 games. As it happened, the Avs lost them 6-5 and 5-4 respectively so in two periods Budaj outplayed the other goalie 1 GA Vs 4GA in both games. It's a very shitty rule and it should be changed. The rule is that if you give up the deciding goal, even if the lead never changed, that goalie loses the game. In both games Theo sucked ass and then Budaj came in and shut the door allowing them to get close but the holes were too fucking deep. Oh well. They better come to terms that Budaj is the starter and Theo was a huge mistake. Bob Gainey found a dumb fucking team to take a huge mistake off his hands on the way out of Montreal as it'll go down as Lacoix's worst move of his tenure too. Theodore has terrible angles, he's slow to get up and too fast to go into the butterfly, can't stear a rebound for his life and gives up way too many. He's just not good and I'm really pissed they keep giving him a chance bc he will cost the Avs 5.5 mil this year and 6 mil next year to sit the bench if the team gets smart!

Perhaps he's has an Albanian background but they never talked about it on the Av broadcasts yet. But he did in fact act as the starting goalie in the olympics for Slovakia. So he at least claims to still be from that part of the now defunct nation. Czechoslovakia split up and became the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Yeesh....a classic bed crapping by my Caps against Tampa...in a big game to, they couldve put them further ahead of Tampa and closer to Atlanta, although the Thrashers won anyway

Just for now, I'd say watch out for Columbus...I saw them take it to the Wings last night, although Detroit nearly pulled it out, they did look good for the most part. I just don't know who's going to score for them besides Nash...Fedorov is washed up.

Of course, you could say the same things about my Caps outside of AO, but I like what I've seen out of Alex Semin, though he's extremely Petr Bondra streaky like, and Chris Clark is awesome.

I hope my boys make the playoffs this year, but i can't WAIT for the future....Backstrom's coming over next year to be the Malkin to AO's Crosby, the defensive corps is young and good now...its only going to get better and better and better as guys like Eminger and Mike Green continue to mature (theyre both in their very early 20s...as is Shoane Morrison) and Jon Erskine has been a GREAT addition to the backline...

Maybe we add a couple vets at the deadline to make a run? I don't know...but I do know in addition to all that, there has been NO money spent on this team...the ONLY reason we're above the salary cap minimum is because we still owe Jagr money...thats unbelieveable

Scott Nichol better get at least a 20 game suspension for his fucking dirty suckerpunching Jaro Spacek tonight in the Buffalo-Nashville game. It was just as bad as the Bertuzzi hit, but Spacek doesn't appear to be as hurt as what's his name, who got his career ended. Kudos to Marty Biron and Nathan Paetsch for grabbing Nichol and attempting to do something. Shame on Toni Lydman, Jochen Hecht, Jason Pominville and Danny Briere for not trying to stomp Nichol's guts out, although, to be honest, Lydman, Hecht, Pominville and Briere might be the 4 least intimidating NHLers.
Yep, I do trust Budaj. Especially since Theodore can't stop a fucking thing. The only games he wins are when the Avs only allow 20 or less shots. And in the new NHL, that really doesn't happen much. Budaj has made all the games Theodore got pulled in competitive, and sometimes suffered the loss due to the Avs coming back and Budaj only allowing one which ends up being the winner even though he wins his time in net by an average of 3 or 4 goals. The rule is stupid and needs to change. Down 5-1 and pulled and lose 6-5 and the other guy gets the loss?! Fucking idiotic! Theo got pulled again last night after letting the Stars come back from a 3rd period two goal deficit for the 3rd straight game. This from a stars team with no Modano, Morrow, Lindros and more. They are severely short-handed and their shots were nothing special either. Up 4-2 and then down 5-4 in only a matter of shifts. He should be demoted to the AHL today! Budaj came in and shut the door for most of the third period, but Turco knows how to close things out (at least in the regular season). I hated the move last year and now I'm ready to punch Q in the face for constantly going back to him as the starter. Budaj has won 4 straight starts while Theo wins one, loses one when in fact the wins are usually bc of great O output that day or the D stood on their heads. The stars should have scored at least 4 more times on him too as Theo was out of position a ton of times and the stars blew it by missing the net a few times and hitting the post 3 times at least. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Q you have to be an idiot or a puss for not telling the Avs brass they made a huge mistake and they need to realize that the contract won't be playing!

See I think Buffalo's biggest rivals this year have been cross-divisional. With all the Ovechkin-Briere theatrics, that has sort of blossomed into a full-fledged rivalry, and I think a lot of fans are looking forward to the next couple meetings just to see what happens. Everyone still hates Philadelphia, and Buffalo got Ken Hitchcock fired. Carolina is also a big rival because of what happened in the playoffs last year, but that's over for the season. The only interesting in-division rivalry this season has been with Montreal and Toronto to some degree. But Buffalo-Montreal has been a great interesting game this year. I'm glad we're playing 8 times.
