Rangers clinch the 6th spot, with the Tampa Shootout loss. This time last month, they did not look playoff bound, let alone 6th spot... 8-2-1 in the last 11 ames is how you finish a year.
damn that means the lightning have to play the devils in the first round
well at least the rangers will get to play atlanta
Alright gang, let's get ready for our first round predictions.
In the West -
8)Calgary vs. 1) Detroit
7)Minnesota vs. 2)Anaheim
6)Dallas vs. 3)Vancouver
5)San Jose vs. 4)Nashville
Since the 8 seed isn't determined yet, we'll wait to do the Eastern Conference.

what happens if the icelanders get a point from the devs and both toronto and them are tied at 91 ???
does it go to head to head matchup ???
If the Isles and the Leafs finished tied at 91 points Toronto wins the tie breaker, which is most wins.
The Islanders have to win and get 2 points to make the playoffs.

so let me get this straight; the Islanders still stand a chance. If they win the next two, and the stars are in the proper alignment, then we're in the playoffs!

theres only one game left, toronto has no games left
toronto is up by one point so a win or shootout win by the icelanders will give them 2 points and jump ahead of toronto
an overtime loss will give them 1 point and tie them with toronto and i dont know who wins that tiebreaker

Islanders may not make the playoffs
Holy shit! Devils score with 0.7 seconds left in regulation to tie it up and send it to OT.
The Islanders have to be heartbroken.

the way lundqvist is playing, who knows how far the rangers can go. they have the weapons to score goals and are playing well, i think they are going to be a force in the playoffs. it also helps they are playing the thrashers in the first round.

Week, I think my post was mis read. The first line was supposed to be sarcastic. I absolutely agree with you budday. Sorry it didn't translate
Not a shocker as you both seem to like gay trick shows to end what were great games in the end. Why play 65 minutes using the normal rules only to turn the game into a glorified soccer match? Fuck that, keep playing or end it in a tie. It's better then winning based on a shootout, especially only 3 shooters. If they went 5 it'd be a little better, but then OT should be at least 10 minutes too. Perhaps MLB should go homerun derby instead of extra innings? Or the NFL should go skills challenge kick, pass and punt contest in OT. Gay, gay and more gay.

at least this is the first time your team has missed playoffs since 94 i think? buffalo has missed it plenty of times so its so fucking great to actually see them playing so well. i just hope they can make something off these playoffs.

Top Ten Reasons the San Jose Tarts Suck
Being just down the street from San Fran, they are caught in the gravitational pull of Barry Bond's Jupiter-like head.
Their once trendy black and teal uniforms should be put back in the 1991 Merry Go Round catalogue
Vesa Toskala is Finnish for "Hi Tech Sodomite"
Nearly half of the San Francisco Bay fog drifts out of Scott Parker's cranial cavity
The Shark Tank should be called the Tart Wank.
Their mascot got stuck hanging upside down above the arena for 45 minutes one night...how apropos
Fans still root for Bay Area Bombers on Roller Derby reruns
Mega Byte this!
They think they're frickin' sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their frickin' heads!
Being from Silicon Valley it's clear they are both micro and soft

Can These Losers Play in San Jose?
(To the tune of "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?")
Can these losers play in San Jose?
These sharks have no teeth
And their teal and black fins are bent sideways
Doesn't their team look gay in San Jose?
They don't really skate as much
As they swish, prance, and sashay
How's their goalie play in San Jose?
Like a bull fighter he waves
At the puck, we say "Ole!"
What tastes good with fish in San Jose?
The Preds recommend white wine
Steamed veggies and shark pate
Do they like to pray in San Jose?
They better learn quickly
The Preds will take their lives today
Can they win? Now way in San Jose!
The silicon valley
Is both micro and soft by the bay
San Jose Sucks
(to the tune of "Jingle Bell Rock")
San Jose, San Jose, San Jose sucks
Parker's a big jerk, Stuart's bad luck
Marleau's butt-ugly, and Primeau's a schmuck
That's why San Jose,
That's why San Jose,
That's why San Jose sucks!
San Jose is Comin' to Town
(to the tune of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town")
Oh, they're tryin' their luck
To bury the puck
But everyone in Nashville knows that they suck
San Jose is comin' to town
Greg, the regular season rules are the rules. You can't change them because the playoffs are on the line.
Now the games "really" count, which means glorious 20-minute OTs.
I understand that completely, Matty, but I've despised the shootout since its inception. This is precisely why. If it's a regular season rule, chances are it could decide some very important games down the stretch, as it did today.

Fact of it is, if Marty had played the Devils would have ended your playoff dreams. But, the fact is the Islanders are in the playoffs, and will be beaten profusely by Buffalo. Maybe the Islanders will ride their excitement into the series and take a game, but that'll be it. Depietro is an ok goalie but won't be able to stop the Sabres assault on him.
The Rangers and Thrashers series can go either way. Lundqvist could either shine or start to slump.
The Devils will beat the Lightning cause Marty is going to stand on his head out there. Maybe Elias will start being the offensive weapon he can be and start getting the puck behind the net.
The penguins and Senators is going to be a good series. If the Senators can shut down Crosby, then I give them the nod.
I don't care about the western conference, so no analysis will be given. Cept that Detroit, Minnesota, Vancouver, and Nashville will advance.

My apologies, Wade Dubielewicz was in net for the Islanders. There third string goalie. This should be comical against the Sabres.
And yes I know the Devils sucked against him, but they didn't start playing till about 5 minutes left in the game.

i hate the islanders but i don't think you are being fair. dubielewicz has been playing awesome for a kid brought up from the minors to play in a playoff chase. i have seen him win 2 shootouts this week and i can tell you this goalie is the real deal. even if marty was in net the islanders would have probably won. the islanders kept the devils scoring chances to a minimum and were able to create a decent amount of chances for them selfs.

From Fox Sports:
"Despite going 15-2-2 in their last 19 games, the Avs won't be in the playoffs for the first time since the franchise moved from Quebec 12 years ago.
"We will come back to camp a lot more confident group," Laperriere said. "We need to start the year the way we finished."
Notes: No team in NHL history scored as many points as the Avalanche (95) and failed to make the playoffs. ... "
Ouch. This really can't hurt worse than it does right now. Fucking Dion is a dirty prick too and I loved Lappy showing him some manners in a game they should have been smart with, not us. They decided to be stupid (flames) and take some shit hits on us in a meaningless game so Lappy and the rest of the Avs started blasting them all over the ice.
Here's the rundown from Fox on the incident:
It had been a quiet and solemn atmosphere until the third period, when the Avs grabbed their first lead on Sakic's goal and Ian Laperriere went at it with Dion Phaneuf for a hard hit on Tyler Arnason. (Hit to the head from behind!)
"Nineteen players out of 20 on their team knew exactly how the game was going to be played: play hard but don't be stupid," Laperriere said. "At the end, it was a stupid hit. We don't want to hurt them going into the playoffs and nobody wants to get hurt going into the summer. You can play hard and smart, but he decided to take a run at Arnason and I felt it was the place to tell him it's not right.
"You just can't do that. You've got to respect the game because it's going to come back and bite you."

I'm not good at deciding number of games in the series, though I do relish playoff hockey for when it does go to overtime. The year before the lock out so many great games went to OT double and triple OT periods. That was great hockey. I do not however wish to see the Rangers go to OT 'cause I can't handle that. It is like when Andrew has to go to a shootout in men's league. Entirely too stressful.

Brodeur thrives off playing a lot. He's always played a lot. He's a work horse. LeCavalier will get shut down just like we did to him in 03.

Sorry Keithy but I disagree with you. First off, LeCavalier is only a part of this explosive offense that you need to shut down don't for get crazy St. Louis. Also, LeCavlier and St. Louis are now a cup winners with great experience and much more composure then back in 03. In fact, now LeCavalier is 27, not a young/lighter 23, so good luck shutting down the league leader in goals 52. Both LeCavalier and St. Louis are coming off career years in points at 108 and 102 ranked 3rd and 5th respectively. In 2003, they had 78 and 70 in a league that was much more set up for the Devil's style.
Interesting points come in on the D vs O theory that used to hold up in the playoffs that might not this year. In fact, seeing the likes of Buf and Caro do so well proved the game has indeed opened up. PP rankings are 9th for TB and a surprising 16th for the Devs. A big advantage comes in the PK with TB being ranked 28 vs. 4th for NJ. So penalties are going to be a huge key in this series if you ask me. If the Lightning are able to control play and hem the devils in, they'll draw most of the penalties with their great speed and o skill. Looking at the year stats shows the TB averaged 2.96 goals per game (12) vs. 2.54 for the devs at 27th.
So it's a very interesting matchup of opposite built teams which should play out very interestingly. Elias is the top scorer for the devs at 69pts, while the Lightning have a defenseman with almost the same at 63 pts (Boyle). So I'd say that sums it up nicely and leaves a lot on the table. Clearly the Devs have a goaltending/D edge, but plenty goaltenders catch "lightning in a bottle" (pun intended) and Holmquist was playing quite well to end the year so I assume it'll be him in net. He did go 27-15-3 on the year and I think they can dictate play unlike the Rangers last year who everyone knew had no chance. They were beat before the first fucking puck dropped, but Tampa Bay isn't afraid of the devs one bit. And I agree Marty will be worn down as well. He's not 25 anymore, so even if they get by TB I promise they won't make the cup final. Not against the O he'll have to face to get there. He'll be shot soon enough and captain Lou should have factored that in for the year use of Marty.

Perhaps Naslund and the Sedins. While Naslund took a step back, the twins played really well and the D have good to great shots from the points.

I totally agree with the TB/Devs call and almost gave the Thrashers the nod but I just think they're too young right now and the Rangers need to make it to the second round badly. They have a ton more experience after last year and Shanny and Avery bring that toughness that the Rangers needed for a long time, especially last year in the playoffs. The X factor is how they shut down the Russian with a shot and a half, along with a good young goalie who can surely match Lundquist save for save.

Lleeder I'm not calling you a bandwagon fan, more like a quitter. You gave up hope like BDC midseason last year in the Yankee thread while others stayed right until the final buzzer. Big difference, you gave up on a team that made the fucking playoffs! It has nothing to do with the history of the team, your following or the talent they gave away year in and year out (and they are pros in this category). Yet, almost any team can name players they moved or let go that are now strong with other teams, but I see your point on that one. And the pain of trading away prospects doesn't tie in to quitting on your team when they still had a good chance to pull it out (or have it work out for them). I feel for you being an Isles fan, but have some faith man.

But with Shanny, Avrey, Mara on the team this year.. Not to mention a nice young gritty Defensman in Girardi... You have to give The Rangers the nod here... If Lundqvist is on his game.. The only goalies that can match him are, Marty, and Luango.. Other that, I do not think there is a better goalie in the sport..

After you suck it bc I actually commented on someone not simply talking up their favorite team. Mudo knows hockey, and you know the Sabers and a bias. Congrats to both of you. I disagree with Mudo often in hockey too, but he makes solid arguments when we do so. Others here simply screem murder, how dare you not think the Rangers will win? Even though I picked them in my predictions! Nice one Kev.

no buffalo team in their prime would be able to come close to edmonton. the best team the sabres ever had lost to the islanders in the cup semi finals the first of their four cups. so they would not be able to do anything against edmonton. good question though.

I guess the Islander fan jumps ship early and I shouldn't question it bc they view it as loyalty since they've sucked before. Yet Ranger fans just endured one of the most embarrassing segments in their history and they never give up. So call me crazy.
I must admit I had no faith in toronto at that point. I didn't stop listening to the game. I had seen them fold against the Islanders on Thursday and has no faith in their heart. I was wrong but there still not in the playoffs.

Spoon.. Lunqvist had like a 1.77 Gaa avg since the break.. Are you telling me that he Atl goalie can match him??Thrashers have a ton of tallent, and by no means is this going to be easy..
How the hell does a second year goalie who was bounced in the playoffs in 4 straight last year put in the same category as Marty? You're nuts man. He may end up pretty damn good, but to say that now is a laugh. Also, I love Luongo and bank on him being huge in his first playoffs but it's just that. If you're comparing their regular seasons, your nuts again. Yet if you're comparing their playoff history, Luongo is closer but HL's quick exit last year puts him ahead not even seeing a puck in the playoffs in his life.
So here are the stats HL 2.34 GAA with a .917 S% vs. 2.79 GAA with a .912 S%. Pretty close overall, but obviously the Atlanta team is young and worse on D at this point. Hence my reason for picking the Rangers. Still, over the last five games, of which the Rangers needed much more than the Thrashers, here are the stats. HL has a 2.2 GAA with a .929 S% vs. Kari Lehtonen's exactly the same 2.2 with a .928 save percentage. Take that for what it's worth. The kid, KL I mean, can take over games at times and probably will here and there in the series. The young Sweed vs. Finn rivalry will surely mean something as well as they have been matching up against each other for years now.
The other factor could in fact be that Bob Hartley is a very experienced coach in the playoffs and will help settle this young team for a good shot at a series win. He already has a Cup and a few WCF showings as well. He knows what it takes to win a series in the playoffs.

How do you think I felt!? I had to root for a team that had 1 fucking win in the last 20 games almost in Edmonton to beat the best team at home last Saturday! Not only did they need that, but they had to go through a tough team led by the General Trotz. Funny enough Edmonton came through while former Avs Forsberg and Kariya helped bury the Avs for the first time in 12 years. Damn.

I said OTHER than Marty and Luango.. He is the best goalie in the sport... I am not crazy enough to put him in Marty's level Yet.. He is very good, but he has ways to go, for him to be on a all time great like Marty.... And i know this an excuse and your gunna kill me for it.. But the Olympics had a huge downward effect on HL... He had nothing at the end of the year.. He even missed a good chuck of the last games, due to fatigue.. Granted that Marty played almost the same Olympic time as HL.. But Marty is pretty much used to playing a ton and he may be better conditioned to play as much, while HL, never really had to do that. Its kinda like Rookies hitting that wall, because they are not used to playing so much in Collage.. This year, he ended the year on fire.. So we shall see how good he does in the playoffs.
03 LeCavalier is not 07 LeCavalier...
I was just talking about this in the car on the ride home today. I don't think Tampa has what it takes this time around. Certainly not enough to make it past the Devils and let me tell you no one wants to see the Devs out of the playoffs more than me, Tampa isn't gonna be the team to end it for 'em.

Actually I totally agree with you on your point tackling the Olympics for younger players like HL. However, he has a long way to go just to get anywhere close to Marty and Luongo, meaning he's no where close to 3rd, 4th or even 5th. I'd put Kiprusoff, Nabokov, Giguere, Turco and some others in front of him right now based on experience and the level they're at. It's not to say he can't take the next step and if you're saying that fine, it's a prediction. But saying he's an elite right now is simply not correct. In terms of younger goalies right now I'd also have to put Miller in front right now too. He may light things up, but I doubt it.

You don't get it huh? I'm simply putting fact to other people throwing out hype and I'm sorry to back shit up with fact and information on the topic. I'm not pissed at anyone and standing behind teams is fine. Just don't try to infer Lundqvist is just shy of Marty Broduer and or call me an ass bc I pick the Lightning in the first round. If anything Gwen, LeCavalier is Way better then in 2003, not worse. He's bigger, a vet with a Cup and is now well versed with what a long playoff run entails. So that angle is gone if you ask me, in fact, it's a negative for the Devils. Oh and who is going to stop him on the way to Marty? He and St. Louis are going to rack up points in this series while the Devs will be forced to play a different game, and they better get used to it if they manage to get by TB bc Ott, Pitt and Buffalo all play in great offensive schemes that put up tons of goals.

Are you nuts, if anything has been proven it is that a Goalie above all others CAN in fact carry a team. It happens all the time and not all result in Cups, but sure as hell take teams further then they should have gone. I can give countless examples so that's not my point. What I'm saying is that the Devils are up against a better, more vet team then in 03 since it was used for comparison by the likes of Keithy and others. I also feel as good as Marty is, the devils eventually have to start building better around him as this isn't the old nhl and it doesn't suit them to start him every fucking game over 30 years old. That's part of my argument.

Spoon, I will say this. I agree with you on the resting thing. I was making that argument near the end of the season. I think the Devils have some young scorers who can put points on the board, I also agree that they need to get faster, but their defense can give teams headaches. I know its not the d of Stevens and Niedermayer but they have improved this year. Week made a good point, the Lightning don't have a solid net minder.

My whole thing about Atlanta was that they follow the trends of the last few Stanley Cup Champs...namely
1)Southeast Division
2) Good Role players (Tampa and CAR had guys like Recchi and Weight and Afinasenkov and Stillman...I like Belanger and Sim and Steve Rucchin)
3) Goaltender who can sparkle if he gets hot (TB and CAR had Khabibulin and Ward...when Lehtonen is on his game, he's one of the best cause he's so big...like young Olie Kolzig almost)
4) The "scrappy gutty veteran that hasn't won a Cup yet that everyone wants to see win one" gimmick (TB and CAR had guys like Andreychuk and Wesley and Brind'Amour...ATL has Scott Mellanby, and to a lesser extent, Holik)
Along with that, Tkachuk and Zhitnik and Belanger have been GREAT additions at the deadline for them, especially Belanger on the PK, and with Tkachuk playing so well, it will take some pressure off of Kovalchuk/Hossa. Plus, Bob Hartley has won a cup before, so he's not going to be a burden on his team in the post season (see Murray, Bryan)
They just have that "feel" about them to me...call me crazy, but I see them coming out of the East...and that's tough for me to say, because I HATE Atlanta

Two Hossa's enter...one Hossa leaves.
Spoon, I also agree with your point about resting Marty and building up the team around him. There are some good players on the devs, but they still need to build up a bit.
Also, as far as Vinny and St. Louis, I pulled for the lightning the whole playoffs when they won the cup (even though I prefer the Flames, I am a chick and I bought into the emotional angle of wanting Andrechuk to have a cup), but I just feel like they don't have the hype they had last time around. Maybe its because of new players like Sidney Crosby, maybe its because of the broadcasts I watch (largely Rangers and what I catch out of market on versus), but I just feel like I haven't heard that much about them. That isn't to take anything away from them, I guess I should have mentioned that I didn't follow them too closely...embarrassing to see on NHL.com that Vinny is first and St. Louis is fifth in goals. It was just my opinion not a soapbox proclamation of fact.
As a New York Ranger's fan, I have to say Im definetly not scared of the Atlanta Thrashers I think the Rangers will win the series in 6.

Yes, it only includes the teams with the five worst records, not the worst ten.
And Chicago will probably screw this up, because Senor Wirtz does not like paying money. At all. For anything. (see his famous quotes about how he doesn't like Stanley Cups because they "cost money").

I watched Patrick Kane play during the World Junior Tournament, and he is REALLY good...I would expect the Hawks to take him at one. I haven't seen much of Voracek, I don't really remember watching him if he was in the Junior Tournament, so I don't know. I did see Kane and Sam Gagner, and was impressed by both.
I feel like I need more OHL, WHL and QMJHL in my life....

don't know if you knew or not, but johnson played in the last five games of the season with the kings. no points in the five games. the kings get little coverage so something like this is very easily missed.
i would love to see patrick kane picked #1 in the draft. i would love to see a someone from buffalo to be picked first in the draft.

That is absolutely nuts.....the GM in Carolina couldn't wait one more year for him? So he dealt him for Eric Belanger and Tim Gleason (aka The Pu Pu Platter)?
Just nuts...If i was a Hurricanes fan I'd be pissed. As a Capitals fan, this makes me very happy.
Playoffs begin tonight!

Thats freakin insane.. You deal a guy with Johnson's talent away, because you can not wait a freaking year for him?? Not to mention.. he plays a mean guitar (Haw Haw).
The Rangers let Montoya play 2 years in Mich, after they drafted him... And that was before the emergence of Lunqvist... Just lunacy..
That leads me to a question.. Could the Rangers package Montoya with a pick or two, and move up to the top 5 of the draft?? They really need a nice young scorer, or a Defenseman. Seeing that HL, has the pos prob cornered fr at least 10 years..
Btw.. Gvac, I am sure your happy with the Dastsyuk 7 year ext.

I would expect the Blueshirts to be heavily into the Sheldon Souray and Daniel Briere/Chris Drury Free Agent Sweepstakes...
Then again, it depends on their Cap

I wish they'd brought up Monty instead of Valiquette. Not that valiquette isn't decent, but I remember seeing Montoya in the preseason and I was hopeful that we'd ditch that loser weekes and have him as our second and valiquette a strong "on call" guy.

I really like the team they have there in San Jose...I think they are going to go really far
I love the mix they have of babies (Milan Michalek, Clowe, Matt Carle) and great vets/checkers (Curtis Brown, Iron Mike Grier, Mark Bell) and their D is really good too (Ehrhoff, McLaren, Craig Rivet). And Coach Ron Wilson has taken a team to the Finals before
I know we have a lot of Nashville fans here, so just wanted to say "sorry" in advance, before I say that your announce team of Terry Crisp and who ever the other guy is are really awful

That last goal by Nashville (Weber) was ALL Reismiller's fault....he had the puck ON HIS STICK, all he had to do was bang it down the ice, and instead, he tried to gently slide it out, and Nashville was able to keep the play alive in the zone. Just a dumb, dumb play.
Reismiller giveth (he made a PHENOMENAL pass on the Iron Mike Grier goal) and Reismiller taketh away...
And I wish Vancouver would go back to the old Black and Gold Pavel Bure/Kirk MacLean era uniforms....those were MUCH better than the current version

If there's one thing i'm seeing that SJ lacks, its a good puck moving defenseman...theyve had trouble moving the puck out of their own zone all night. And I know MTL wanted Carle and Pavelski for Sheldon Souray, but that would have probably made them an instant lead pipe lock cup contender (and their PP was awesome already.....add Souray to that mix? yikes!)
