No cheating to make a situation better. It may not be the smartest thing, but hockey doesn't jeoparize their values.
At their worst ESPN makes more pub for their products than OLN... And as far as the not cheating to make you sport better... Sometimes its necessary to some evil to achieve a greater good... I am not saying do it a lot. But Crosby is a talent that does not come along too much. He is essential to the success of the league.. Like when Gretz moved to LA... This kid needed to be in a big time city.

Dumb, stupid, gay..... Stick to not knowing football will you. I can't stand the fact that people can't see that the sport will never be as big as the other sports just due to its nature and I could give two shits. However, if they understand the true fans, tend to them, and model itself with parity like the NFL by protecting the league versus the big cities as Kevin suggests, I will remain a huge fan. If they do get rid of fighting all together, that would be one hell of a bad blow for me. It's needed just as much as non-rigged drafts that Kevin so fucking wants. First it came out of nowhere, and second Pittsburg is a really good sports/hockey town. Sorry it's not in NY so you can jump on board another helped winner like the Yankees. You're insane some times Kev! Seriously!

The Devils have a better offense and could easily open it up if Crosby came on. The defense is a trap, doesn't mean they wouldn't open the offense. It is possible to play both schemes. Being a defenseman, I could easily adjust to the defense, with the o down the ice. If your D is full of skilled skaters it wont be a problem.

Nice to see Narc had some very similar points in this argument as I caught up in this thread. Yet you're still wrong on the Green Wade!

The Devils are of course a pipe dream. The only team that would make sense is the Rangers. They sell out, they are the biggest tv market, and they are close to making the playoffs. Kevin was simply stating that Pitt. isn't great for him. I think he is wright in the repect that No one cares that he is the youngest to reach 200pts. He is kicking ass, but that would have been all over the papers if he broke that in NY

Give him whatever he wants. I dont care if he wants a steet named after him or a new car.
One of the managers where I work has a nephew in the Isles/Dragons front offices. He said the plan is to buy out Yashin and re-sign Blake and Smyth at the end of the season. It all hinges on Yashin's willingness to take the buyout. Wang was very happy about Blake's comment just before the deadline that he wanted to stay on the Island. It was a 180 degree turnaround from his attitude a couple of weeks ago (supposedly triggered by his agent). Wang apparently bought Smyth a car (Lexus, I think) and a house on the north shore as a welcoming gift. Garth and Wang really want to keep both guys here.

Man, if that guy is telling the truth, i may faint. haha. having both Blake an Smyth back would be great. cut our loses w/ Yashin. So what if we take a cap hit. Then, also sign Souray, but now im just being selfish.

Wow the Avs played the most horrible 3rd period AGAIN but managed to get two points in the end. At one point they were being outshot 16-1 in the 3rd but somehow both teams scored! Everyone wants to blame Budaj, but I'm telling you the Avs not only play awful defense when healthy, they have had a ton of injuries on D, with 3 starters out right now! Bries, Leo and Skras are all out. While Liles missed a few weeks with a broken foot as well. However, believe it or not my biggest issue with their D comes with their inability to cover the points and get pucks out of the zone. The ill strategy they seem to run is a 5 man collapse low and block everything they can, instead of solid positional hockey keeping the wings on the point with a slight collapse only when they can make up the groud to fill the easy shot lanes and keeping an eye on the better D shots like Aucoin, Lidstom and more. Yet they are always out of position so the D can pinch without any risk at all, and to get the puck out with nobody to move it up to is fucking infuriating!! Tack on the fact that they play real soft and you'll see why they need to go after some strong D and tough centers in the offseason.

And by the way Gvac, that Maltby hit was real cheap and will cost him when Parker meets him next time. Mark my words buddy. This one will carry over, especially if the Avs end up making the playoffs and they meet as the #1/#8 matchup. The Avs have some tough road ahead, but I can't hope for it more!

Mario was putting up some huge numbers, and you did not hear about him near as much as Gretz. So please do not tell me Sidney should not be in a big time city, for the good of the sport....
Well the Avs are finally sticking with Budaj and it's paying off bigtime. They have such an uphill battle it's crazy, but who knows right? The kid was NHL third star of the week and has now won 4 straight games while Theodore sits on the bench. It's about time they stuck with him and allowed him to get a fucking rhthym.

Budaj: 22-15-4 .910 save percentage/2.77 GAA with 3 shutouts after todays shutout

Theodore: 11-14-1 .888 save percentage/3.42 GAA 0 shutouts

Now factor in that Budaj got 4 of his losses in relief for Theodore in games where they were down 5-1 coming in and lost 6-5. So under his relief he allows 1 goal to the opponents 4 and they give the loss to the relief tender??!! It's the rule, but stupid. It should follow the pitching rules of MLB in terms of lead changes and or ties at least. So to me, Theo is 11-18-1 & Budaj 22-11-4. You do the math and figure out who should be the starting goaltender. Stop fucking with it Q!!!

They've gotten a ton younger and have new leadership on the team so let it all out there. To be honest, they have been playing much better of late. They made the right move with Forsberg as well.

What, no Sabers talk tonight?

Overall it was a good game but Kaleta is one hell of a big pussy. I have a big problem with a guy breaking the code in terms of fighting in that on tivo you could see he and Lappy had agreed to drop the gloves at the faceoff. This is done in an effort to man up and go to battle without one guy getting an instigator penalty. As soon as the puck dropped he faked it and then turned and ran against a guy who's physical, but by no means a Parker or Larouque. Somehow it worked out for a goal but it only pissed the Avs off more and ignited them. My favorite moment was when Hecht stood up Guite on the Avs and Parker came in and simply leveled him. He may not add much in terms of offense or skill, but they severely missed him for the last few years as they never had that guy to just make the other guys fear taking liberties with your star players.

However, Miller made some great saves and I was happy to see Drury back on the ice but glad he didn't hurt the Avs. He came real close but hopefully saved his points for the Wild game on Friday. We need the points so much more then Buffalo right now, and the Sabers can narrow that 6 point gap for the Avs by taking out Minn! Beat them up too please so that they can't skate well for their games ahead.

In the Avs net, Budaj continues to sparkle against a high powered offense averaging 5.2 goals a game over the last 6, losing only once. They are the top scoring and best overall team in the league right now so a 3-2 win here on the road is pretty sweet. Now it's 5 in a row and perhaps my Avs can make this happen. They now have 3 teams within 10 points and if only one falters there is definitely a shot. And how about Colorado's two rookies? They continue to mature and the team is growing in it's efforts to play a full 60 minutes with a focus on D as they have to firepower to score without pushing the limits and taking chances.

Funny, I've never seen this Buffalo forum called the NHL Season Thread so quite. It reminds me of the yankee thread when they get knocked out of the playoffs. Only difference is that I actually like th Sabers and Drury a ton. So much that I root for them in the Eastern Conference and against everyone but the Avs!

And besides, fuck that, the Sabres scored scored because LaPerriere was stupid enough to just drop his gloves. Whatever works.

That was one of the most boring games I've listened to all year incidentally. It sounds like the Avs were just trapping when they got the lead, and doing a good job of it. And for whatever reason (I think it was the long rest they've had) the Sabres just couldn't get their legs going and seemed generally disinterested. It happens sometimes, but it doesn't make for particularly compelling hockey, and I'm not just saying that because the Sabres lost. It was just the fashion in which they lost. It reminded me of that bad run in January. Just sort of a "whatever" game.

Well, we won't disagree there even though Simon helped protect the core Colorado players in route to a Stanley Cup in 1996. He's just an idiot plain and simple. Yet I truly believe Bertuzzi is the worst of the pack.

Funny enough I got in an argument with him during round #1 of the Stanley Cup playoff at the Westin Tabor Center in Denver when I flew out to see some first round games. It just so happened that the Canucks were staying at the same hotel (along with the D-backs/I met Randy Johnson on the rough top hot tub...weird and the NBA team who I cared so little about I forget who was in town. I was actually talking hockey with Crawford and the Sedins near the front desk getting coffee and they were real cool. I was a big fan of Marc in Colorado and we were talking about his strange exit and the Sedins were just kids around my age at the time and real shy. So Brashear and Bertuzzi walk up after I was talking all sorts of hockey with them and a few other players (no Naslund though dammit) and Bertuzzi says, "Stop talking to these Denver assholes, what the hell is wrong with you guys." Marc laughed and appologized and Brashear came over and said he can be an ass and proceeded to sit down with my friend and I and talked hockey fighting for about a half hour. He was strictly an enforcer back then and he was a cool mofo. Bertuzzi however, I hated him before he even pulled that fucking stunt. And by the way, Moore hasn't stepped on the ice in an NHL, let alone any league since the hit. He should fucking pay for that move with a portion of his salary from here on in.

So it just so happens we see him later that night in the hotel lobby after the Avs took a 2-0 lead in the series and started giving him shit. No kidding, this guy really wanted to fight us and we just kept laying it on thick. When any other Canuck was around we were nothing but cool, but to him we just kept picking at the wound. I'd love to have it out with Frankenstein these days. The fucking fury I have built up for him is unspeakable. And now he's in Detroit....Perfect.

I wasn't talking about the literal speed of the game. I'm sure they were skating fast and everything. I'm talking about the flow of the game. There was absolutely no flow. It wasn't very open at all - it was like pre-lockout trap era hockey. That's not Buffalo's game. The Sabres always have trouble with Florida and Jersey because they still play that way.

From what I saw of the game, it didn't look like Kaleta agreed to shit. Laperriere just dropped his gloves and everyone else went. And week is right he did look embarrassed after the fact. There has to be an agreement for the code to come into play.

I don't see how Simon's hit was any different from McSorley's hit. He never stepped on the ice again. Simon has a checkered past including racism despite being American-Indian. He has been a scumbag for a long time. He got away with a lot with Washington because they were never a threat. Very dirty player. I say black ball him for good.

Just in case anyone was wondering, here's a list of Simon's previous 4 suspensions -

1) a three-game ban in 1997 after directing a racial slur toward player Mike Grier, who is black.

2) During the playoffs in 2000, Simon sat out Game 2 of a series against Pittsburgh after he cross-checked Penguins defenceman Peter Popovic across the throat in the opener while with Washington.

3) In April 2001, Simon received a two-game ban for elbowing Anders Eriksson of Florida.

4) He then was given a pair of two-game suspensions in 2004 - for cross-checking Tampa Bay's Ruslan Fedotenko and then jumping on him and punching him, and for kneeing Dallas defenceman Sergei Zubov.

I agree but if his stick went 6 inches higher he would have been in that catagory. It's the act that gets you in trouble, not the result. I played for many years at high levels and I've done some crazy things in the heat of battle and paid the price. Part of the game to a certain extent. But once you choke up on that stick and let loose, no telling what's next. But the court system needs to stay out of this whole thing. Simon may have ruined his career. That should be enough. Look for him at a roller hockey rink near you (like McSorly).

I love discussing the game with intelligent hockey fans/

I don't know if there is a different Brashear, but I meant Donald Brashear who is now on the Caps. He always starts a fucking ruckus when they play the Rangers and when he was on philly he did the same dirty shit. It's not like he's a guy who hits hard and clean, he's the guy who takes cheap shots and just starts crap with people to be a douche. Thus, I lumped him in with Bertuzzi and Simon.

Gwen, thats what guys like Brashear are PAID to do...you can't have other guys taking liberties with your superstars. People have to know that if they take a shot at Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin or Alexander Semin, Brashear or Jon Erskine is coming over the boards the next shift and knocking someone around. That's why Pittsburgh just picked up Georges LaRaque at the deadline to give them some toughness around those pussies Malkin and Crosby. That being said, there IS a line as a "pest" you do NOT cross, and Simon CLEARLY crossed the line between what is acceptable, and what is not. I believe the players do a fairly good job of policing themselves in that regard (see when Matt Bradley pummeled Jarkko Ruutu after pulling Ruutu's own jersey over his head....an unwritten rule that youre not supposed to punch a guy in that situation, but Ruutu's reputation as a dirty player is/was such that Bradley kept pummeling him, as he should have). But in some extreme cases, like this one, there's definitely more that the league should do in addition to whatever punishment Simon gets on the ice from people taking a run at him.

Or you could just get the center ice package from Cable TV. We had it last year and we got to watch all of the games we wanted. It was around $130 for the season but we got to watch so many games. If we werent saving for the wedding and trying to figure out the budget for our new house these days we'd totally have gotten it. It was SO awesome during the playoffs. We really got to follow them extensively last year.

Only thing that sucked was that there wasn't a lot of HD feeds.

Anyhow, our D is so riddled with injury it isn't even funny and now you can add Rachunek into that. I don't give 2 shits about him, but now we only have 5 defensemen who're averaging in the 20+ minutes on the ice a game.

And maybe someone can tell me why the hell DiPietro was so far out of the goal with 2 defensemen down there with him? There was absolutely NO reason for him to be that close to the blue line to play the puck when you've got 2 guys iwth ya. He just likes to try and make these retartedly flashy plays, half of which he bungles.

If he's out for a while the islanders are outta luck for the playoffs, 'cause Dunham stinks. The newark move is a huge mistake. Its sad, they have been the most dominant and most consistant hockey team in the area and they always get shit on. I don't understand it
Not only have they been one of the more dominant teams but they will continue to be! The scouting is awesome, every year they have a few new kids, you hear there name and you are like "who?" Then they end up in the rookie of the year running. Madden, Rafalski, Gomez, Gionta, Parise, and Zajack to name a few.

You hockey peeps are keeping these threads fresh and adding a ton of cool hockey threads yourselves. It's been a great hockey year on RonFez.net!

As for my Avs, did anyone even think they'd get this close? They're now 7-0-1 since dedicating themselves to Budaj (which I've been calling for since last year) and are now in control so to speak of their destiny. They've closed the gap between them and the flames to 6 points with a game in hand and 11 games left. Budaj is pretty money. We often catch the Avs games on HDNet he seems like he's really got his shit together. Once the Rangers and Stars are out of the mix I'll gladly root for the Avs. I think I've got my Roy jersey floatin' around here somewhere...

Yah Gwen, for some reason they do get a lot of HD Net games don't they. Is it me, or is the HDN broadcast team very quiet and the score on the screen off a little (and too small)?

And when Budaj gets consecutive starts he definitely gets into the flow better which has built his confidence a ton. He's super athletic and very good positionally. He simply finds ways to win games and turns it up as the game goes on as his stats get better with each period. All goalies have bad goals and bad games once in a while, but how they respond is what really seperates the good from the great. And so far he's very Roy-esque in that he shuts it down after a bad goal almost as if it motivates him to not allow a single goal more. And he has come back from losses with wins almost every time, especially after a bad outing. The only problem earlier in the year was that Q kept going back and forth with...that other guy?? killing his confidence as Q has been known to do with young goalies.

Update: The Avs also came back from a 3-1 deficit last night to a streaking Sharks team for an OT win pulling them to only 4 points back of the flames now! This 8-0-1 run has been against some really tough teams and Budaj, Sakic, Stastny, Hejduk and many others have been playing amazingly. This one came in a back to back night for the Avs with a lot of travel and less then 20 hours between games. Also, the Sharks had only allowed 4 goals in their last 6 games total and none in the 1st period during that span. The Avs were able to get one in the first, en route to a 4-3 win in OT! Now the flames have to be very concerned as a huge double digit gap has now shrunk to 4 pts in a very short amount of time.

Also, the flames now have games against two President Trophy race teams in the Predators and Red Wings before hitting the road for some really tough matchups where they have been the league's worst team (on the road). Check their road record, it's crazy. The Avs have to go to Edmonton (in a real bad slump since losing Smyth) for back to back games before a very tough part of their schedule comes up. This should be really interesting and I hope it means playoff drinks for Gvac and I as our teams battle it out again. It's been a while and the rivalry needs some reheating!

I couldn't agree more about the Colorado/Detroit rivalry bro. It would be great for the two of them to meet up again in the playoffs and renew old feelings.

I find it funny that you're gonna be rooting for the Wings tonight, though. Maybe it'll rub off on you and you'll decide you really don't hate Hockeytown as much as you thought.

I see your point, Greg, but I also am of the mindset that Tootoo saw the hit coming as retribution for the hit he laid on Modano. That being said, he should've taken the hit (in the quick shot of the hit I saw it didn't look like a charge, but again it was out of context of the game) and then dropped his gloves to take on Robidas who hit him rather than just cold clocking him like that.

Was it just him connecting at the right angle and speed to knock him out like that or was it that he purposely hit him that hard?

The only teams that actualy earned cups was the Devils, with your logic on payroll.
Kevin, that's not the point. It's the difference in the sports and the grit and work one has to go through to win a cup versus how pure talent alone can win a world series. Your Rangers in hockey sum that up so well, versus the success of the Yankees. Both spent tons, top payroll for both leagues and look at the differences. Now I realize that other factors come into play, but who was attacking your devils? Not me, it's the yanks buddy. Not to mention that some teams did it with legit trades in the NHL, versus contract buy outs in MLB that only the chosen few can handle. Also, it's different when a team has it's stars cash in and you pay them, versus creating your whole rotation or otherwise to be in the big game. I think all sports need to have a veto issue on trades like most fantasy football teams have. I hate the rent a player mentality of the NHL and yes, even the Avs were guilty of this. Yet most of the time they kept the players they traded for and gave up good talent to get them too. And look at the difference in those salaries versus that of MLB. Big difference as well. If you can't see that, you're blind, not just strange.

Where did you find those stats as well? I'd love to check out the 96 Avs and others in the last few decades. And can you find MLB salaries for the yankee championship years. I'm sure they were the top paid team for most of them as well so that kills your argument.

I'm all for hitting the stars as well, but you have to know you'll need to fight if you do and he took a cheap ass shot there. Robidas was coming in to grab Tootoo at best as Robidas isn't exactly a brawler. There just seems to be an overall lack of respect for the players of late. I really can't put my finger on it, but the code hockey players have played by for years seems to be disappearing of late.

If you just layed someone out with a perfectly legal hit and as soon as you turn around someone's charging at you full steam, you wouldn't defend yourself? There was no time to square off and drop gloves, so Tootoo just stuck his arm out.

I've got no problem with it because to me it looked like Robidas was the one out to lay a cheap hit on someone.

I see your point, but he didn't defend himself, he laid the guy out. And judging by Robidas's reaction time, I doubt he was moving in for the kill but rather to control things. If he was truly coming to lay a hit on him versus grabbing him, he still would have ran into him hard. I'm a little biased because I know both players history I guess, but I've had situations like that and simply side stepped the goon coming in rather than trying to end them. Tootoo looks to hurt people is my main point I guess and he deserved more if you as me. A hit to the head, especially like that, is going over the line to me.

And I guess they have a point about Modano helping US hockey as he is the leading US born scorer in history now. Edmonton was nice enough to do a tribute to Sakic when in town. Colorado did something for Deadmarsh and many others have in the past so it's not out of the question. The difference is that it's celebrating a goal against the home team and I can't get behind that.

And the Avs kept rolling last night with a 5-1 win over Edmonton on the road last night. It really should have been a shutout for Budaj, but the Avs got lazy on the PP with the 5-0 lead and made some big mistakes coming out of their end leading to a point blank shot from the circle which Budaj still stopped and even with the extra man there was nobody covering the second man in front of the net who chipped in the rebound. It was a lazy/dumb play, but no biggie bc it did get them right back on their game. I'd rather it happen in a 5-0 game no doubt.

So the Avs are now 9-0-1 in their last 10! The next game is on the road against the struggling Oilers once more this Friday, while the flames play at home against Nashville. If things go right, the Avs can be down only 2 points come Saturday! And let's not forget the flames and Avs play twice more this year too! I haven't seen the Avs play this good since the lockout and if they make the playoffs they'll be real tough as an 8 seed. No doubt in my mind. First things first though.

Come on man, if that isn't a huge generalization which I take offense to I don't know what is. There are assholes at every god damn position who don't realize it's now men's league hockey and you're not going pro and it isn't the NHL with it's fucking medical coverage and money. We all go to work the next day and guys like this are simply fucking assholes. My team lost it's semifinal playoff game last night and it was pretty much a clean game. However, even up 3-1 late they had one asshole who seemed like he just wanted to hurt someone and came really close. We were pinching in on D and pressing hard to get it within one goal. After a near miss on a slapper, the puck rings around the boards and right to their guy on the move. We only had one D back and he played him great and forced the puck in the corner on a 1 on 1. As our D turned to play the puck in the corner this asshole just up and checked him from behind (as if he was waiting until he had his back turned) and drew blood and hurt our guy. Obviously we were pissed and so was he. Unfortunately we needed the PP and calmed him down but he's a cop and had some choice words for the mofo and the guy turned pussy real quick. Also, we have this ex marine on the team that no lie is 6'5" 230 and just ripped. He skated over to the penalty box and calmly said it'd be smart for him to just go home! I

'm usually the idiot going after these assholes but today my boys had his back. Even a few of their guys came over to appologize and sure enough he came out of the box later and picked right up where he left off. So in front of their net with very little time left he slew footed one of our guys and my buddy just starts fucking crushing him over and over in front of the net and he tries to fight back but gets fucked up. Best thing about it is the refs really hated the douche and never called our guy and the kid starts yelling at the refs. As he chases the refs yelling he tells my buddy "hey at least I'll be playing in the championship game!" And I really believe the refs heard him say this bc as he got warned to shutup and didn't they called unsportmanship (he kept going), Game Misconduct and ejection (he gets louder and gets in their face), and finally the ref says "guess what, you won't be playing in the championship your suspended!" He went nuts and my buddy just started laughing right next to him it was a sight to see. He broke two sticks leaving the ice and showed just how much an asshole he was!
