View Full Version : Favorite Old School Cologne and Aftershave

The Blowhard

Being a kid and getting a cologne and aftershave gift pack(which usually included the dreaded soap on a rope!) was always a horrible gift, and I'll never forget these:

English Leather: sexy commercial: "My men wear English Leather, or they wear nothing at all". The stuff wasn't that bad, and I loved the wooden case and bottle cap.
Brut: Two words: Broadway Joe
Old Spice: "Hey Grandpa"! The stench always made me cringe.
Hai Karate: Never liked it, I hated the commercial with the nerdy guy.
Skin Bracer: Never liked it, burned your face like battery acid.
Letric Shave: Smelled like bong water.
Pinaud Clubman: Still a classic, one of the all-time best.
Royal Copenhagen: Awful, but the perfect re-gift.
Aqua Velva: Watered down soap water.

Any others? And remember, no top shelf stuff.

Love's Baby Soft. I'd wear gallons of this nauseating stuff!

As soon as i read the title i thought of english leather. I always thought the stuff was nasty, and me and my older brother were constantly doing experiments on it. We would get the soldering iron out and make the whole house stink like dirty burnt english leather. Those were the days.

A woman I've been seeing for the past 5 or 6 weeks gives out gifts on Easter even "though she is an atheist" which strikes me as funny but anyway. When we get together I've been using Perry Ellis and Hugo but she says she never really notices it no matter how much I spray on. So she bought me Aramis which she likes and which I believe is "old school".

She sprayed a bunch on me and it smelled alright. The funny thing is we fucked on and off for the next several hours and she never mentioned the cologne once. Which I'm hoping is a good thing...

I was helping move some friends into this old house. I was carrying some boxes into the bathroom and caught a glimpse of emerald green in a cabinet and couldn't believe my eyes! HAI KARATE! It had been left behind?
My friends asked me what I wanted for helping them and I told them if they'd let me keep the bottle of Hai Karate we'd call it even. Don't use it of course. It just sits on a shelf as a goof. When I bring a lady-friend home and things are slow...Are we getting anywhere here or do I have to use THIS?
It's a date breaker or date "maker". The line of course.

Old cologne? Your list is too good Blowhard. Struggling here. But when I was 14 yrs old I bought a lass a bottle of "YOU'RE THE FIRE" perfume. And when it was over (days later) she bragged to her friends she'd poured it down the toilet. Probably a good place for it. This other gal I ran with often used this one perfume that I had an allergic reaction to..."CHARLIE" or "CHARLEY". God it was a killer.

Charlie was huge back in the day, the commericials featured future Charlie's Angel Shelly Hack and the late Bobby Short, a NYC cabaret legend.
Also, did you guys ever use that deodorant sticks that came in the cologne/aftershave gift packs? They would always give me a horrible rash, and burn the skin off me.

I only ever saw this in one bar. It was in a bar in Pensacola, FLA in the late 1980's. Right next to the condom machine, there was a cologne dispenser on the wall. It had 3 choices. You'd put your quarters in it, and it shot out a burst. I can't remember what the other two were, but one of them was Drakkar (I think).

It was funny as shit. The guys would be drinking all day. Right around nine PM, the women would start rolling into the bar. All the sudden, the whole bar would start smelling like a mixture of the three scents. Ahh... the bad/good memories!

I had Love's baby Soft, Jean Nate, and LOVED Gee Your Hair Smells Teriffic. Do you remember Babe?? I also had a perfume that was made by Love's Baby Soft that smelled like pure lemon juice (Love's Fresh Lemon; no where near as good as Jean Nate).

I miss the shampoos Body on Tap and Agree.

I disagree. I think that Neil Diamond was an Aramis man, and that Englebert Humperdinck was an Aqua Velva man. Just a hunch. As for my own tastes, I was lucky to have a Dad that was a business exec and he stocked up on top shelf stuff. Just picture Jerry Seinfeld's cereal shelf and that was what my dad had with colognes and aftershaves. Old School? I still go with Pinaud Clubman, for that fresh, give me a lollipop with this haircut feeling. I also have Brut, it was on sale at a dollar store. My girlfreind sent me Armani, but I only wear it for her, and when I go out cruising on Christopher Street.

True Story? Jesus, I didnt realize they had sold out so soon.

Yeah.
Jovan sponsored the '78 tour.
You had to buy a bottle of the cologne to buy a ticket.
Thing was, I bought the cologne and then got a ticket without needing the proof-of-purchase from the phoo-phoo.

I ended up joining a country club in Charlotte, N.C. that had a block of tix at the Greensboro Coloseum. 10 bucks to join the country club abd another 15 for the ticket and I think it was another 5 bucks for a bus ride from Charlotte to Greensboro.
The bus had 2, 55-gallon drums full of ice and one was full of mixers and the other full of beer, more than enough for the trip up and back.
A great deal and a great show, which I have on bootleg.

Back on topic, Old Spice made me want to join the Merchant Marine and carry a duffel bag around.

That has got to be the original old school cologne.
